Job interview

Job interview

Hi their i have a job interveiw today just settling the nervousness. This time round its seems more difficult with several mental health conditions but im going to make it through a tough "ten minutes". Im running through what im going to say in my head. Will future employment be difficult and how long until i open up about my conditions?

Re: Job interview

Good luck with your interview. @Dk5

I have a lot of MH issues and I currently work full-time. I find it helpful to have the routine and the distraction. Yes there are days when I don’t want to go and there are days that it’s just too much and I call in sick. But that is me, I have no one else to support me so I have to work.

Everyone is different though. Just my opinion but you won’t know until you give it a go. As for disclosure that can be a tough one. I did disclose after many years of working there, my actual diagnosis, they made things a living hell for about 12 months, even stood me down for a month until the Pdoc could review me and then now everything has settled down. They don’t constantly ask me how I’m going and they aren’t checking in on me which I prefer. I’m treated the same as anyone else.

This is just my experience and I know others are completely different.

I wish you luck with your job interview. @Dk5 I'm on the job hunt too and xan relate to the anxiety and fear around attending job interviews.

Re: Job interview

Good luck with the interview ☺️ Nerves are very normal even for people without mental health. As long as you have rehearsed your answers to potential question. Know your resume of the back of your hand you will nail it.

I teach people interview skills for my business as the first thing I tell them is if you already got an interview your have a 95% chance of getting the job as they already know they are very keen on you.

As for disclosure I worked many different job and chose to never disclose and yes there were days that I needed to take of for my own mental health but took them as sick days.

The hardest part was the early morning rush having to get up after taking sedating meds the night before. But I got used to that by having early nights and plenty of sleep.

Be kind to your self.

Re: Job interview

Hey @Dk5 hope all went okay yesterday with your job interview. I've navigated if and when to tell my employment about mental health struggles, so I encourage you to do what feels right for you 😀

Re: Job interview

It’s completely normal to feel nervous before an interview, especially when you’re managing mental health conditions on top of it — and the fact that you’re still showing up says a lot about your strength. You’ve already got the hardest part handled: you’re prepared, you’re reflective, and you’re determined to get through those tough ten minutes.
Future employment isn’t automatically going to be harder. Many people with mental health conditions work successfully, especially once they find environments that are supportive and understand their needs.
And you don’t have to disclose anything in an interview unless you want accommodations. A lot of people choose to wait until they’re settled in a role, or sometimes never disclose at all — it’s your choice, and your pace.
You’ve already taken a huge step just by being willing to try again today. You’ve got this.
