If you are not comfortable talking very much, they should understand. Its part of their job to make sure their patients are comfortable. You might surprise yourself tomorrow in how you feel when you wake up. You could focus on just the presenting problem. You don't have to tell everything in your first appointment.
Another thing I look for when I see a Dr is how comfortable they try to make me feel and if I get relief from seeing them- I think that is a good sign in terms of how they mite help you.

Hey @oceangirl
What else do you try and look for in a gp or psychologist? You've said that you try to see if they make you feel comfortable. Do you reccomend anything else to look for like maybe friendliness or something?

What else does everyone else look for?

SOMEONE WHO LISTENS TO YOU! Someone who checks in with you to make sure that they are getting what you are saying. Someone who offers their thoughts on the matter. Someone who listens to your opinions of the matter.

Oh, and you might be surprised at how good it can feel to let another person know all of your 'stuff'. (Not that I tell my psychiatrist ALL of my stuff, but the more honest you are, the better they can help you.)

@Former-Member
How do you know if they are really listening to you. Its easy to keep looking at someone like your listening but are actually tuned out?

Re: what to expect when seeing a psychiatrist
My doctor checks in to see if she understands, if I say I feel crap, she'll ask if my mood is low or if I'm angry or something like that. Or if I'm explaining something, she'll respond to show she's listening, e.g. I mention a bad day at work, she'll respond that it's normal to feel down after a bad day like mine at work. I've had psychs not listen and misinterpret what I've said and when they've mentioned that I felt or thought 'x' and I've told them no, that's not what it's like at all, they've ignored me and changed topic. It's not so much that they've tuned out, it's more that they've understood you and what you were trying to say. If that makes sense?
