Looking for advice on how to get a sense of power, mutual respect, and autonomy back
Hello.
First off, sorry if this is the incorrect Space to ask this question in. I wasn't sure where it belonged.
Secondly: I'm OK and I don't mean to offend any mods with this post.
A few days ago I was involuntarily brought to hospital for daring to mention the "s" word to a help line service. I won't go into the details of that because that doesn't matter here.
I've noticed that when being marked by the system as a mental health patient, people - mental health practitioners - treat you very differently, almost like a child. Even their tone of voice changes.
The moments this usually happens most is when I ask questons.
For example, I just got an unsolicited follow up call from the hospital after being brought in. The first question I asked was "How did you get my number?" as I didn't remember anyone asking for it at the hospital. The MH team lady just replied "Yeah..." in a kind of baby-voice before taking the conversation in another direction. This happened a few times - I'd ask a question, and they'd reply "Yeah..." and move on to something else.
Same as when I was at the hospital. I'd ask a nurse politely when I would be seeing a doctor and they'd reply "Oh, don't you worry abou that". When I tried to go for a walk around the ward to stretch my legs I accidentally wondered into the wrong section and a male nurse yelled at me "Oi! Sit back down!".
I feel that if I were a "mentally healthy and normal" adult there for any other reason I would've been treated differently. Eg: "I'm sorry I don't know the answer to that" instead of "Yeah...". Or "I don't know when the doctor can see you" instead of "Oh, don't you worry abou that". Or "Hey sorry mate you're in the wrong area, could you go back over there please" intead of "Oi! Sit back down!".
I have another phone call coming up soon with people from the MH team. I don't want to be talked to like a child again. I'm a middle aged man and would like to be talked to as an equal, not an invalid.
Would anyone have any advice on how to achieve this?
