What has been your highlight today, no matter how big or small? Come share 🫶

Hi everyone! This is my first ever forum post so do hope it lands where it’s meant to 🤣

Most days, I like to find a highlight 😊. Usually, that means during a walk with my dog, I try to spot something different, something cool or something that brings me some happiness. Whether it’s something big or small, it doesn’t matter. A highlight can be anything!

I love taking photos and would really like to share and see what you've come across. Something that made you smile, sparked your interest, or simply caught your eye. For me, it’s all the little things that count on the hard days.

To start, I’d like to share these beautiful birds I came across today. They like to appear like branches of a tree or the tree itself. They are called Tawny Frogmouth’s. Has anyone else seen these types of birds? My pics below -(hopefully not too small to see two in the tree on the left pic).

What have you seen today? ☀️💛🙏

I am grateful that today went reasonably for my son. It was a big day. Things are still very unjust, but that is the way it is. I had a yummy bowl of choc syrup, cream and icecream. Forget the healthy food for a moment!

@heartathome I did conference work and opshop work for Vinnies for years. It can be great, and a good contribution. Hope it was a good day.

@Taali Yes, we all sometimes mask a bit for mentla health. I hear you, they are often not that switched on and a bit rote. The actual capacity to help of a support worker can be better, due to the longer shifts, and non clinical setting. Its not all about you has the most quals. Lucky that you get the private option, but I know it costs.

@DownMoreThanUp Yes, to your post, but my parents had such serious mental health conditions that it got in the way. They needed their own needs to be met, which was often me. Though I know they did they their best, at the time.

Just typed a long reply and it wouldn't send. Damn it!!

Just need to clarify that I get really nervous about p'ing anyone else off

Now back to my highlight

I ordered an indigenous Port Adelaide scarf for my sister aaand it arrived today ! Yippee!!!

Can't wait until Sunday so can give it to her.

Hey. Here's a point that I debated during my last psychiatric hospital admission. There's no such thing as true altruism

My stance is that doing good makes us feel good.

Your thoughts?

Yep, I totally agree with you about the support worker being of more value.

But I need the psychiatrist for her ongoing support

However it seems that it may be cut off in future due to so called "improvements " in the system...

Although she has said that she will still see me if that's the case

@Appleblossom

You really stay on top of things.

I'm really glad you treated yourself.

@Taali

My first friend was indigenous in an orphanage, and I have walked the walk a long time, since the 1960s. I've stood with Stolen Generation in Silent protest etc etc, been to many events. Also my father did, and introduced me to his koori friends. I care about genuine Sorry Business and real justice, I have spent money on books, scarves, clothes and lots of things, but I feel I have paid enough rent. I gave away a didgeridoo as a woman told me off for having it as I was not supposed to have it as it was for Men's Business. Genuine reconciliation has mattered to me for decades before it has become a bit weaponsed, by virtue signallers, so I am backing off from it. A week ago, in a workshop, I was forced to watch a link about being manipulative about white guilt. I just dont feel white guilt, cos I was so much on side and have similar standards of living and outcomes. I have experienced reverse racism now. so it is very sad. In my heart I will always be grateful for the great things of their many cultures. I loved Robbie Hood, various directors and the Deadly comedy awards, and I went to the Sydney Opera House specifically for The Season, a wonderful production. In fact, I leaned more towrds their culture than European Aussie, as we were so marginalised. Eg., I am not into Arnotts biscuits. If people have white guilt, they need to make their own reparations. I am not even white. I understand the physics of skin colour. I have freckles. I also had beautiful artist friend Trevor Nickolls, in the 70s. This is his self portrait. He was first indigenous artist to get tertiary training and be hung in the National Gallery. I have a wonderful memory of quietly staring into the fire and talking with him, and knew his various partners.

Well, that's amazing @Appleblossom

I don't carry the weight of "white guilt "

My father, unlike yours, was a good man but terribly racist

Oh the shouting matches we had

I remember one when my mother sent us both outside to talk it out before giving us our dinner

Well, that didn't work 😕

Do you know that the woman who took your didgeridoo was wrong,, some mobs not only allowed, but admired women didgeridoo players.

You have certainly walked the long walk

We here in Kaurna Country call our black brothers and sisters Nungas

Oh BTW great picture !!

Re: What has been your highlight today, no matter how big or small? Come share 🫶

Thanks @Taali Actually the racist Aussies were a bit of what put me off, being Aussie. I would just go quiet, and not argue, cos I was very low status and there were lots of big mouths around. So, I just carried on in my quiet way. My Aussie dad died young and had no family cos he was in the orphanages with his koori mates, so he associated with their culture a lot and taught me stuff. He died when I was 11. Now, I am proud of him, but the racial issues are complex. I have been told off by northern staters, for being pie in the sky.

The person who told me off about the didge.... hmmm ... was actually my first support worker ... she was a pain in the bum white Australian know it all lady who was very bossy. Eventually because I was doing peer work and facilitation online, I found that I had rights and choice and control on NDIS. I suffered a lot, but eventually realised, she was paid to support me, not boast and carry on. So I let her go, but it took a while, as I am not reaactive and so used to being submissive, even though I had more education and general work expereince than her. I did not have a sense of entitlement or that I could stand up for myself. I have been working really hard at that in the last few years. I then hired an Islamic guy from Ghana and we got on fantastically for over a year til he left the area.
