Re: Hi

10's quite a good number! i reckon it's nice having a group around that size, it'll give you all a chance to really connect/catch up properly. @ArraDreaming

has there been any interesting topics or stories you've come across while chatting with the other parents?

Re: Hi

Hmmm

@rav3n good question

I got some good cooking ideas and some stuff for the garden

or like footy, kids, and that

It’s hard to meet new people

Re: Hi

@ArraDreaming oh cool, sounds like they share your interests too!! i don't have kids myself but i love listening to parents talk about the mischief and weirdness their kids get up to.

IT IS hard meeting new people, i literally had to use an app (it's like a dating app but for making friends) to find some new peeps to connect. and then making time to stay connected with everyone's schedules add another layer of difficulty... that's what i love about your Sundays coffee club idea. there should be more of these around, it would be really wholesome!!

Re: Hi

Heya @ArraDreaming 😊

I do remember. Thanks for tagging me.

It's so cool how you've listed both the challenges and strengths that come along with your ADHD. I relate to a bunch of them, particularly:

  • Appointments and plans overwhelming me.
  • Noise, chaos overstimulation - this definitely makes me much snappier.
  • Zoning out
  • Being creative
  • Problem solver
  • Fix it mode (and it sounds like this also relates to a super strong sense of justice).

I think we actually really align on this; it's called being human. I do want to acknowledge that sometimes having a "label" that helps explain some of challenges can be good, because you can more easily find other people that have similar experiences, and you can access certain supports. HOWEVER, I do agree that we lean on labels too much (aka overpathologising being a HUMAN). I'm so much more complicated and colourful than any combo of diagnoses will ever capture!

It might be a bit radical, but I'd like us as a society to one day get to a point where we don't need labels to point out our differences. I want the world to just be like "Yeah, human brains are diverse and infinite and look at all that they're capable of doing and feeling".

I AM medicated. The biggest thing that my ADHD medication does is just makes my brain a bit... quieter, I guess. I can (mostly) pay attention to the things I want to pay attention to. In saying all this though; pills don't teach skills.

My mantra in life is "Don't forget your humanity". I'm human first.

Also, I really appreciate your honest take on this.

Re: Hi

you will like this one then… @rav3n just cleaning up from dinner then will go spend time with the family BUT

One thing I can tell you is our 2 year old will only leave the house if shes carrying a full sized tennis racket, we have to take it every where, she takes it to bed!!

Re: Hi

Yeah I see both points @0ddsidian

In hindsight maybe my opinion comes from shame?
not sure, just spitballing

Because I was treated so poorly at school for the way I behaved that I feel like I have to keep saying, I’m a human I can do good things please don’t put me in a box and think you know me just from some paperwork!!
Because that’s usually how it went and it never ended well

I remember being given my own desk facing the wall and a teacher taking a photo of me sitting facing said wall and printing it onto a bit of paper so that I could visually see what I had to do and the same teacher calling me “the add kid” and would say to everyone “ignore him, A.D.D kid is just attention seeking right now”

I didnt even know her? I wasnt even diagnosed then but the writing was on the wall i guess

But like I said, what’s trauma and whats adhd? The two in my opinion can be confused.
I couldn’t sit still and was “naughty” but I was also a kid going through some pretty f*cked up stuff

Re: Hi

We don’t even play tennis @rav3n
it’s nearly as big as her she can barely carry it she is also the tiniest little thing ever
We have a fight every time we put her in the car cause we have to pry it out her hands to put her harness on
When our 4 year old was that age he had an emotional support spatula… same deal @rav3n
Little weirdos
