The song Treaty by Yothu Yindi was released in 1991 as a response to what many Aboriginal people saw as a broken promise by the Australian government. In 1988, Bob Hawke attended the Barunga Festival in the Northern Territory and was presented with the Barunga Statement. He said that a treaty with Indigenous Australians would be negotiated by 1990. By 1991, that treaty had not happened, and the song was written partly as a protest about that lack of progress.

The band itself was symbolic. They combined Yolngu musicians from Arnhem Land with non-Indigenous musicians, blending traditional Yolngu music, language, didgeridoo and clapsticks with contemporary rock music. Their name, Yothu Yindi, means "mother and child," reflecting connection and relationship between people.

OK, so I went back and watched the video (such an awesome song) and that's not one where she smokes, so I'm a bit lost on the smoking woman thing 🙂
