Sibling grief - I recently lost my brother - death by suicide

Sibling grief - I recently lost my brother - death by suicide

hi all,

I recently lost my dear brother to suicide. We are 14 months apart in age.

this past week, there has been a stream of condolences and as much as I understand their intended kindness to allievate my pain, these well wishes don’t understand, that yes I am heart broken by his passing, but I am also re-experiencing this disenfranchised grief of losing my brother to severe mental illness, this has been so very isolating and traumatic for so long. My wound did not begin three weeks ago, and I can’t be bothered listening to their advice or stories or anything really. I’ve politely replied via text, but I cannot give anymore. I’m now 45 and my brother 46, our parents both passed. I have no interest in being consoled by those who have no idea, as I am not consoled during this, rather I’m listening to them. I haven’t quite found the words, I feel more ease in my solitude at present. Anyone else had a similar experience or thoughts.? Thank you

Re: Sibling grief - I recently lost my brother - death by suicide

Hello @Kathryn13 I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to this space.

Condolences are so tricky when we've lost someone, it can seem pretty impossible to come up with a combination of words that will truly console someone who is experiencing grief, especially when others only seem to have a surface level understanding of the depths of feelings that you're going through, and what you have been going through, as I hear this pain stems from earlier than your brother's recent death. I think this disconnect can be heightened when the person lost is due to suicide, that naturally opens up a whole new layer of complexity.

While I can't relate exactly to your situation, I can relate to that feeling of not being consoled by other's platitudes when I was going through grief. I could understand that they were well-meaning, but I knew they didn't understand and found myself being more frustrated with them. Fortunately I did have some others who had a very similar relationship to the person we were grieving and we all naturally sought eachother's company while we processed our grief.

I hope that in reaching out here you can find some similar solace in knowing that there are others who can relate more closely to your circumstance and experiences.

Thank you very much Ru-bee.
You’re so very right, condolences as do tricky. And I have this little voice reminding me “meet people where they are at”. I guess in grief, this is not as easy.
I’ve reached out to a few organizations to join some bereavement circles, I think at the moment hanging with strangers who share similar experiences seems like the right amount go my system to handle.
it’s lovely to connect in via the SANE forum. Thank you

Sending love and light ❤️ go gently on your, my husbands brother committed suicide 10 years ago he was left to do the cleaning up, absolutely heart breaking watching my husband and his family children. My husband never seeked support until 2 years ago I found him alternative to normal therapy its called swan hypnotherapy technique after 5 sessions he's moving through the process with more ease. My coldences to you all sending love and rainbows 🌈

Hi there @MedicinalGypsy ,

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Moderators had to edit parts of your post to remove the practitioner's name. Unfortunately, members are not permitted to share the names of practitioners and their details and it can lead to breaching anonymity or the promotion of practitioners.

We recognise this practitioner was instrumental in supporting your husband. We hope you will be able to continue to share the skills and experiences of your husband and yourself.

Re: Sibling grief - I recently lost my brother - death by suicide

Hey @MedicinalGypsy ,

My apologies. Anonymity is around not disclosing any information that may identify you.

For example, if you or your husband use a service, and you make a recommendation to someone else, then they use the service, there may end up being a breach of anonymity if you 'bump into' each other.

The other thing with sharing details of practitioners is that IF, it doesn't go well with one party, then SANE forums acts at the middle platform that shared the information.

Hopes this makes sense.

thank you @MedicinalGypsy

I’m so sorry for husbands experience and what a supportive heart you brought to his experience and your children.
One of the things I guess I fear is my ongoing entanglement- bother and sister souls intertwined. But like you and your husband I have sought both traditional therapy and an energetic therapy approach to dig below my conscious mind, get to the places I fear to process that my thinking mind may not allow me to go and heal. The swan hypnotherapy technique sounds really interesting, I read something once, the messages we seek are here when we are ready.
sending you much gratitude and warmth for your sharing and fir your journey. We are all walking together in our journeys ❤️
