Welcome and getting started

Schizophrenia Support

Schizophrenia Support

Hi, just wanting to get some help to understand my 28yo sons schizophrenia. He is currently admitted. He needs community support when out, it's hard to get assessed for NDIS as he doesn't see he need it. I hope he gets help before and after release, I don't live near him so one on one support from me is not realistic, his mother, my ex passed away some months ago from a known condition. He doesn't really have many options due to previous history and drug use, where do I go, where to start, he will need help to navigate life in the community, thanks

Re: Schizophrenia Support

Hi @YD

I imagine this is a very difficult time for you, and hard to get your head around what your son might be experiencing.

Lots of people that experience schizophrenia have had drug issues in the past. I believe it's often a possible contributing factor, rather than the cause.

The reason I mention it is because you posted that your son might not have options due to drug history.
Your son's drug history should not affect the treatment he receives.

I don't know what his symptoms are and how he's affected, but I completely understand the belief that he doesn't need support.

I can link you to a website that may be helpful

Re: Schizophrenia Support

Hi @YD

Your son's GP may be able to refer him to community psychosocial support programs.

The Primary Health Network should be funding services for people who don't have NDIS. You can ask about it at psychosocialsupport@health.gov.au

Thankyou, it's good to hear from someone who has experienced it. Happy to look at UK stuff. Thanks again, all the best on your journey

np @YD

this site might be helpful.

About Living With Schizophrenia - Living With Schizophrenia

i would probably recommend starting with "Information for Doctors and Health Workers" as it's similar to the advice for carers, and/or those that may be close to your son.
It also gives insight as to what you would want to see from any treating doctors.
