Something’s not right

Anyone else hate their birthday?

Anyone else hate their birthday?

I don't really understand how/when/why this started, but for years now I've tried to avoid my birthday.

Yes, there was an event when I was younger and had a bad one.

It'd be easy to say that was it.

But, I honestly don't think it's that simple.

There's an underlying belief that I'm not worth celebrating... that I don't deserve gifts, love, admiration, or even respect.

This plays out in many other areas of my life in how I see myself. Always working too hard to achieve something - to pay my own way (often failing).

I don't see myself as being as good as my peers, even though I suspect most people have plenty of self doubt, bad habits, and mistakes in their past. (Maybe social media is somewhat responsible for this skewed view of how perfect others are...)

Now, where did these ideas come from?

I don't want to celebrate my life!

The people who love me don't know me - if they did they'd leave.

Oh man... I'm not doing well today 😞

Yes. It was my 48th bday 2 days ago and I’m in a struggle.
It’s been this way as long as I can remember & 10 years of therapy hasn’t changed it. That deep seated belief that I am not worthy has been extremely stubborn.

I hope we both find a way to enjoy this simple recognition of survival and one day feel free to eat the cake.

Welcome to the forums!

I can relate to hating my birthday. Well, it used to be 'hate', but it's a bit less now.

Only because in the past, I felt that with each year, I was getting more depressed that I hadn't done anything with my life.

Now? I don't LOVE birthdays, but I don't hate them. I just ignore them.

Thanks for your replies.

I turn 50 next year.

At the end of my birthday week (yes, it took about a week for all the little traditions and events to be over) I announced that next year, I'm only doing my birthday on the day. One thing. Dinner... a movie... whatever it is. If people miss it then too bad. I'm not going to try and fit in with everyone so they can celebrate. FFS it's MY day, not theirs. (The real eye opener here is that this whole birthday thing is more about others celebrating me than it is about what I want, right?)

I can handle one day. It's a Friday next year too. So... that will be convenient.

I hear you @KirSa_EnigmA

I guess you really should have a say if it is YOUR bday. I'm not looking forward to my bday either. It'll be in a few weeks. I want it to be hush...but then I know people will want to do something - so I have to just be happy?
