Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Thank you all. 😊 So far so good this morning - I know from forgetting medication doses in the past that if I sleep in I don't get withdrawal, only ever seemed to cause problems x-hours after waking/getting up. So using that knowledge I stayed as sedate/napping as possible this morning before my appointment, and no way to tell whether or not that helped - but I was able to drive to my appointment and back this morning. 😊 Although yesterday the symptoms didn't start kicking in until early afternoon.

So I shall do what I can online here whilst I can 😊 because I want to. Whether that be 10 minutes or 2 hours!

I have aircon on - thank goodness. Actually kept it on overnight (on a higher temp though), since it was still warm overnight and says up to 38 today. Feel sorry for people working outdoors today. Dogs are all sleeping thankfully.

@Chasingsunsets @Flutterbug9 @NightFury @Shaz51 @MissGremlin @Cuddlebear @Jynx @AuntGlow Look forward to reading how you are, and hoping you all have aircon or a cool place or ice pack also. Hope its a good day for you.

@AlwaysMyself I’ll be on and off the forums, usual for me.

happy to continue our recent chat on 1 condition, that you are up to it.

can easily time shift it to another day also. 🙂

reached 42 here yesterday, mid 20’s currently yet feels warmer. I stepped outside for short while, now back inside with drapes closed, aircon and ceiling fans on.

going to move couple items I’ve been saying for last couple days I’m going to move.

It’s amazing the benefits of getting lots of sleep/sleeping in can do. 💜

Hello lovely!! @AlwaysMyself

I am responding to your message from Christmas Eve first (slowly getting to everyone's replies!!).

I completely get needing to take time away from the forums or from a social space when your energy stores are low. I agree that deeply connecting takes much less energy than small talk as well - I noticed this come up a lot for me over the break too. How are you feeling post-holidays?

All of this is so interesting and I can empathise with being very sensitive to the world around you. I am sensing that this is a huge conduit for a lot of your feelings and experiences overall. A highly sensitive being can carry SO much without even realising it. How do you recharge when you are on your own?

I am more than happy to help you excavate your psyche! hehe I think becoming curious and non-judgemental is so key when trying to understand ourselves.

ooh, that new medication you mentioned sounds like exactly what I probably need too hahah

And honestly, you might find that dopamine-focused medications really help you, because they are stimulating. There is still so much for you to try and explore, I have faith you will find answers that resonate with you. 🫶

Thinking of you @AlwaysMyself 💜, I really love everything Auntglow mentioned to you - sooo good! I want to echo - “I have faith you will find answers that resonate with you”

Yesss me too 🫶

@AlwaysMyself @Hello lovely how are you feeling today? Thank you for letting me know how you are.

I am glad yesterday you could drive and get out a little. Plus it’s good you’ve got air conditioning. This heatwave is awful for everyone and I’m hoping today that the cool change comes as quickly as possible.

Im sorry I have not been on forums much. I’ve been struggling and the heat makes it worse. I’m safe. I’m with Wilbur indoors.

i will try to catch up on some forums today if I can muster it.

Hey @AlwaysMyself hope you're surviving the heat today!! How are things going with the meds withdrawal?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I am glad to say yesterday and today went well with very minimal medication withdrawal symptoms - so much better than Wednesday was!! Was able to go to all my appointments today and the scheduled social thing this evening. @Jynx @Cuddlebear @Chasingsunsets @AuntGlow @Flutterbug9

I did make sure to lay down and rest as much between things as possible though, not that i had much free time today though. Tomorrow will also be a very busy day with 2 social things.

@Cuddlebear thinking of you and sending extra care. I read that VIC should be getting a cool change tomorrow, so I hope it comes your way. I hope you are not close/affected by any of the VIC fires (this also goes for all others in VIC too). We should get the cool change here on Sunday, 1 day after you.

We actually got a lot of smoke yesterday (thursday) all the way from the VIC fires!! It was dusky-sky and an asthma warning. That smoke had travelled a long way!

Nearly 11pm so i shall have to sign off. But wanted to at least let you all know the last 2 days had been a bit better and say "hi". 🙂

Working my way up the emails from 2 days ago lol. Problem when im on my laptop as i dont then delete the emails, so now im working out what i have or havent already replied to haha.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AuntGlow i think i am a sensitive person, yes.

How do i unwind? Well, see, again - anhedonia is a problem eh. So for me unwinding can be processing thoughts by myself, or doing some painting, or reading a book (although i think i struggle to do this unless im already unwound?). Listening to music sometimes, but usually that is just whilst processing thoughts or physical resting.

I guess there are 2 categories. Mental unwinding = processing thoughts (quiet time) or simple-visual logic puzzles. Physical unwinding = laying down in bed/couch (maybe with music or a podcast), or a tv show while painting.

Hi @AlwaysMyself sorry for crashing your thread.

Normally it would be sociable to say Happy New Year, but I don’t know if you want to hear that right now. If so, then good, else just ignore that part.

I am back from being away, not sure what my involvement in forums will look like now.

I just came to say Jacques posted a link to an interesting You Tube video in the thread

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PEOPLE WHO ARE TIRED OF EXISTING RIGHT NOW in this space.
I’m just alerting you in case it resonates with you. It did with me.

I hope your tapering goes well. So that you can participate in trial, which I also hope goes well.

Remember to look after yourself first. There are enough people on the forums to provide support to others. Well done for taxiing to clinic and well done on attending there.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely. How are you today? I am really glad your tapering is going well.

It sounds like you’ve been able to engage in the things you’ve wanted to. Appointments and social time these are all awesome rhings that you’ve been able to do I am really happy for you. Sounds like today is busy for you too I hope the social stuff goes well.

It’s been very hot here but it’s cooler today. I’m not near any fires. Could smell smoke earlier today and last night.

I’ve been very down and feeling very defeated in everything. I’m not sure what else to do to be honest. The panic and thoughts of worthless and no love is really upsetting to me. I want things to improve. But it’s not. I feel so stuck and alone.

I will take Wilbur for walks today as we couldn’t in the heat. That’s all I have on.
