Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@Cuddlebear it is quite interesting how we are quite similar in this too. I am so glad i have gotten to know you over the forums 😊🥰. I wonder what magical 6th sense it is that we have within us that picks up on things we may not even be aware of and draws us to get to know or connect with people, who then turn out to be of similar values. 😊 ive had this happen a few times in life. Or maybe i just notice and value it more when it does happen? Either way, i am very glad i met you. 😊🥰.

I will be heading offline for the evening soon. I suggested to go see a movie with my dad - a way of spending time together that is positive hopefully. Because of the time and seating availabilities of the movie sessions this evening (with our late decision to see one) we shall see Anaconda -- which is a comedy inspired by the original movie. Family-friendly comedy should be a good neutral-ground for seeing with my dad - should not be any "controversial" or politics in it 🤣😅.

Not sure what my plan for tomorrow is. New Years Eve. So that means in bed alseep before 9pm, right? 🤣😅 i dont stay up for the fireworks and i decided to NOT go into the city tomorrow because i think it will be soo busy with NYE people 😶. I will go later in the week to wander around. Hopefully tomorrow will be relaxing and quiet for me.

Do you and Wilbur plan anything for NYE? Even if it is watching a movie at home together, in the aircon.

I think the movie was a good choice - he said he enjoyed it more than he thought he would. No controversial topics or rants afterwards! Thats a win! 😅

@Chasingsunsets @Cuddlebear

He will be out tonight at a dinner at a friends place (i said he should go, not stay home just because i am here). I will be staying home.

Oh yes @Shaz51 , my poor baby girl who is stressed will be very glad on Sunday. My other dog will be glad also. And of course my mum's dog will also greet me enthusiastically also 😅. But yep my 2 probably won't leave me alone the whole night haha.

Oooh, it's just started raining where I am. at 9pm. Lol. just at the time for the early fireworks 🤣😂. not sure if the city centre will be raining, where the fireworks are, but they are in the suburb I am in lol. I love murphy's law.

@Chasingsunsets I am hoping to be accepted into a research clinical trial for psychadelic-assisted-therapy (PAT). if I am accepted, I don't know whether I will get into the active or a control group, but it is worth trying both for the chance to get treatment but also to help contribute to the research which has so far been very positive for both "treatment-resistant" depression and ptsd. If I don't get in the main active group, I may still get a session or two with the active therapy and other sessions with the alternative -- which would still be quite interesting. I have never used non-prescribed drugs, so both medications would be an interesting (and in safe and legal setting) experience lol. And if i don't get active treatment, by the end of 2026 hopefully there will be some local places that are setup for paid treatment which i could get into i hope. unfortunately they can't offer the real treatment for those who are in the non-active groups, because they don't have enough funding to pay the clinicians (volunteers with limited time). But they might know of doctors who are setting up practices with PAT they can informally refer me to. 😊

I am really hopeful for PAT to help, as it is the only treatment (other than trialling different medications to see if any others have a better effect) I haven't tried that is not ECT (which I have a lot of reasons to NOT do, as it could drastically reduce my existing quality of life).

If I did get PAT and it did not help at all though... that would be very challenging. But I will have a lot of support at that time if that happens - I would have my current supports plus the doctors from the PAT also. I am not actively worried about this, i do genuinely think PAT could help based on what I have read and what i suspect is causing some of my anhedonia.

Hey @AlwaysMyself, thanks for posting re your potential trial. When do you find out if you are accepted?

I wonder if there are any other places doing trails like this? It does sound interesting for sure!!

I do hear your apprehension re “what if the PAT treatment doesn’t work” it’s a bit daunting to have so much weight and expectations in one area hey “like all the eggs in one basket” but I am glad this part isn’t not holding too much weight for you now. I hope over the year more ideas or avenues could pop for you if and when needed though of course 🙏🙏
