Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yes, it is nice having my mum back @Cuddlebear 😊 saw her this morning for a few hours before I had to head out. Yesterday I had a number of back to back appointment, then 2 hours home before I had to head out again to my game group for dinner and play - so I wasnt home until very late (for me lol).

Then out for a lunch picnic today with Deaf community. Now killing time until I go to a friend's dance performance tonight.

But tomorrow? Nothing booked in the calendar! 😋 washing the clothes though lol. And rest. And I guess at some stage the dogs will be dropped back home again.

My back has still been really sore quite a bit - usually from about lunch time onwards it gets strongly aching. I'm not sure why it seems to be worse the past 2 weeks; could be due to new spine alignment from chiro and my muscles getting used to the new positioning and needing to strengthen... 🤷‍♀️ on the plus side, I haven't noticed knee pain 😁.

I'm glad your GP validates that the medication taper was too quickly, and is supporting slowing it down. The value of a GP who listens and is supportive is great. 😊

I hope the involvement in the MH Hub is good. Definitely could be a way to meet other supportive people who "get it" on the hard days. And hopefully people who are caring and considerate and make a special effort to ensure you are included equally with regard to being able to hear the conversations (and 1:1 conversations as I expect that makes it much easier), and offer to help you find your way around if you ever want to go when you dont have your support worker present.

Thats interesting that its an "either or" woth NDIS between guide dog and taxi budget. ☹️ its not like you can jump onto Wilbur's back and travel 10km to the shops or a meeting location!!

If *I* were in charge of the NDIS I'd fund a budget for BOTH supports for you! 😁😆 vote #1 😆😆.

I am glad though that your support worker can take you places, and i do hope if you find some social group yu feel comfortable with and find a new friend you click with that maybe they would think to offer you a ride to/from so you can save your support worker hours for other needs if you wanted to. (I dont know, but its the type of thing I think of with my friends. And something I did for a vision impaired friend when I first got my license 😊. Here he she even trusted me driving! 😋)

I am horrified by the CAT person saying you walked too slow and just leaving you to walk back yourself! I get that they are on a time schedule, but they should have kept track of that when walking earlier and turned back earlier if they knew they needed to leave early -- and even then definitely not said so rudely to you about being a "slow" walker. Seriously. I too am a "slow walker" often - mostly due to pain and stiffness. And if I were walking with my eyes closed or without my glasses on, I would be even slower as id need to ensure where I was about to step is safe. I know you have a LOT of experience walking blind, but still it is natural to walk slower when you need to check out what is in front of you. Their ignorance on this makes my blood boil in defense of you. Im so sorry, and I hope you know it is THEIR problem, not yours!! The fact you CAN and DO go walking with Wilbur independently is AMAZING and brave! I know that even with a guide dog physically guiding me I would feel very vulnerable and unsafe not being able to see my surroundings and what other are about. That employee wont be winning "support team member of the year" for sure!

Hopefully it will help the reflect though and think about what they would need to take into consideration in the future with *any* client.

So glad your aircon works!!! 😁 I do not cope well in the heat, and 30 is waayy too hot. We had a 28 degree day and that was bad enough!

I looked up this morning what the current temperature prediction is for the next 2 weeks for the first place I'm travelling to (which is in 1.5 weeks time). Current prediction is about or just over 30 degrees high (24 low at night!) And thunderstorms or rain each day! 😆 oh boy. Lol. I knew it was a risk as November heads into the "wet season", so I booked as early in Oct as I was able to given other commitments, and usually the first week of Nov wouldn't be too hot or wet yet. 🤣 yeah my luck lol. But the accommodations have aircon from what I read. And the trips to see wildlife are in 4wd (open or closed not sure!). I hope the animals still come out in the rain 😆. I mean, they do have to still eat and drink at some stage! Lol. No idea yet what the weather (or ocean chop) will be like for the second half of the trip - thats the boat-based one haha. But usually they get a later wet season by a few weeks as they are abit further south.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

That is a good visual @Jynx , there are a lot of different things I didnt realise also were considered along the scope.

I do believe i have some form of mild dyslexia/dyscalclia since early childhood. But was not to a degree that I struggled with school. (I did struggle with legible handwriting too 😆, but I often copied down Spelling Lists with wrong spelling! And omg the story of my high school math was "correct from error" marks due to numerical switching/substitution by accident -- and even when checking my work before submitting it wouldn't notice them!). But I was (still am) very good at maths (except mental arithmatic, im ok but not great) so I was never flagged as having a "problem" until I had the same math teacher for my last 4 years of high school and he would get frustrated-for-me about how many marks I would lose because of my random number substitutions that would randomly appear from one line transcribed to the next 😅🤣. It ended up a friendly joke between us as to how many i would get in an exam - and how great if I didnt get any CFE marks 😆.

...I do also sometimes have some auditory-process problems, but theyre intermittent. But more than a "normal" person does!!

Both these traits are inherited from my father, who is attrocious with spelling and also has moments of auditory incomprehension 😅. "Would you like a cup of tea?" 😶😵‍💫 what does that mean?? Yep simple things sometimes lol. Part of the reason I decided I would not consider a career as an interpreter.

Hmmm a good belly laugh. When was the last time?! But at least I can remember that! And a few occasions too!

Now, I hope this also gives @Cuddlebear @AuntGlow @rav3n and anyone else reading along a good laugh...

But for me, a good belly laugh is "oh no, focus on holding my legs together and muscles tight.... dont release any pee!!!!" And ive never even given birth!!! 🤣 (i hear its a common thing as people get older - but ive been this way since I was a very young child 😬😳🥺 so I have a sense of humour about it these days. But my f2f friends dont know lol).

But seriously, how does it feel after?

Tired. Can feel more moody and low after sometimes too. I dont understand it, but its been that way since I was a teen - and ive wondered if it could be an energy/fatgiue factor, like laughing hard makes me soo tired out emotionally that I feel like shit after?? But then, having a good cry emotionally doesnt - it just makes me sleepy 🤷‍♀️.

Ever made rice paper rolls for dinner?

Last time I remember a careful-not-to-piss-yourself laugh was when learning to make them. A friend's one stuck to their plate so much that they turned it upside down and it still wouldn't come off. The memory still sparks a small smile, even though the visual memory is almost completely faded (i dont have much visual memory for things. I dont imagine in pictures much, except for some language or number processing that I find i need to visualise! But its all non-photo cartoon style 😅).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself oh wow lol I love that with your maths teacher 🤣 I reckon I've got dysgraphia (maybe related to dyspraxia, but I'm as yet undiagnosed) which makes my handwriting atrocious 😅

Like one of my more frequent mistakes is accidentally making the first b in probably into a p (because I just wrote a p, maybe?) or I accidentally turn a q into a g. I also can't write in a straight line - unless the paper is lined, I'm writing sentences in a curve 🙃

I also tend to mix cursive and print, and the mistakes are so frequent that any given page will have multiple lil scribbles on it. Bday cards from me are fun! Especially when you throw in the fact I'm left-handed and often forget to wait for ink to dry... so it's a scribbly, smeared looking affair whenever I write one 🤣

OMG laugh-pee, hahaha oh you poor dear!! I get that occasionally but not so much it becomes a focus. But yeah I can hear how confusing this is for you - like I too will feel tired after a big laugh, but it's like a 'good tired', almost like I feel satiated or something.

You ever hear that whole, 'excitement and anxiety both look the same in the brain, it's just the narrative we give the experience that gives the emotion it's positive or negative quality'? Like both emotions result in activation of our parasympathetic nervous-system, i.e. racing heart, dilated pupils, sweaty palms, etc.

I bring it up because it could potentially be another route to explore in therapy - like, maybe your experience of these emotional states is negative because you're telling your brain that they are; and it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. Our brains don't file information according to logic, they do it according to association, and if you've already strongly associated negative emotions with those positive experiences, your brain might just automatically continue to perceive them that way.

You know, even though I'm quite fascinated by your experiences, I do really wish it weren't such a source of distress for you. Please let me know if my questions ever become distressing or overwhelming or if it starts to feel like I'm being insensitive 💜

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Oh, no, I really like your questions @Jynx 😊. Im very much a thinker and analyser myself, so its great to have things to ponder and test out.

I've never thought about how our brains can interpret the same stimulation as either anxiety or excitement. 🤔 but yeah, it totally can. Classic thing being a roller-coaster right? For me, definitely more an anxiety "shiiitttttt why did I agree to this????" And not the adrenaline excitement rush that thrill-seekers get. Having said that, I'm generally not an anxious person (but yes I acknowledge that I am highly organised and planned as a way to make sure I dont feel anxious about being late or not knowing where to go; although the idea of getting lost doesnt scare me -- done that soo many times and its always worked out just fine lol).

But yeah quite possibly with regards to depression. I do think there is a strong level of in-graining of the brain patterns from my pre-teen and teenage years (when my depression was the most severe).

.... the question is... how do you break those mental patterns?

Its not like I go in thinking "oh this will be bad" (which is know many depressed people do). I often think "oh yeah, that sounds a nice idea" but when im doing it I feel very disappointed and unmotivated by it. Its almost the opposite of typical depression where people find it hard to decide to start doing it, but improve once they are?? 🤔

I'm really hoping that i will enjoy my upcoming holiday (since the past 2 i havent). I'm "throwing everything i have at it" to try, in that ive decided to take pain medication as often as I need (probably around the clock for the long-acting one) to reduce my physical pain limitations as much as I can, and that if my partner who is still going with me (despite moving out) is tired or grumpy or irritable then that's his decision what he wants to do and I'll do my own independently. Im not going to let him drag me down this trip by not feeling able to do what I want to.

I need travel to be enjoyable again, something I can look forward to. Its the only motivating thing i've really had "for myself".

Oh, @AuntGlow thats something I do for myself - travel overseas to new places. Its obviously not an "always" thing, but its how i have always managed to convince myself to keep working- so that I have money for travel-on-a-budget.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Good morning how are you lovely?

I got a big chuckle about the rice paper rolls. It’s happened to me too. These days I put them on some baking paper as they then don’t stick.

Ah my friend has also had incontinence since their teens. They also have epilepsy so I’m not sure if that is a contributing factor for them. We always make sure we are near toilets though as it is hard for them to hold on.

For a giggle I sometimes wear my clothes inside out not realising due to sight. Some clothes are hard to tell which is the right way on. Especially with no tags on them.

Neurodivergence has many elements and different experiences for people. I’m really enjoying learning from you and @Jynx @about this through your own lived experience.

Im excited for you for your up coming vacation. You’ve got an excellent plan in place to have a good time. When are you travelling and for how long? It sounds like you are going overseas. How awesome. Can’t wait to hear about your travels and observations of it all.

How’s your mum? Did they enjoy their vacation? It must be real nice to have her home now!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello! How are you? I just read this post after responding to your other post. You already let me know here about some of the things I was asking.

How was games fun times? What type of games do you play? The deaf get together sounds awesome too I love how you have no issues making friends with everyone. How did the dance performance go? What type of dancing was it?

Yes having a spine alignment can increase pain while body adjusts and strengthens. I’m really glad your knees are not hurting though. You do get out and about so that’s good as it builds strength though I know it can also cause pain afterwards.

I hear you on the warmer weather. For me 30 is too much too and humid weather is awful as well.

NDIS is frustrating. The either or as you put it is a real thing with the NDIS. I live in outer suburbs too so public transport isnt so easy especially with buses.

Im hoping to be able to attend some social groups through MH services. I am hoping I’ll be able to hear people too and feel included. I’m going to give it a go as it could go really well! It’s worth a try isnt it.

Than you for understanding re CATT team. I felt so sad and hurt by that comment and them just rushing off. I get they are busy but as you said all they needed to do was walk back a bit earlier with me. Yes it is scary to venture out even with a guide dog. We have to be careful and work together to navigate public space safely. I’m experienced with it but I’m still careful and you can feel vulnerable. It’s why we tend to go to familiar places and if going somewhere new we take it slower and I do some preparation via google etc before we go.

It’s good I at least have some hours to get out with my support worker. I appreciate it I’d just love to be able to have other social things to do independently as her hours a very limited.

Oh boy you’re going to a warmer climate but the good thing is there’s aircon in accomodation and inside areas including cars. I reckon the animals will be out as they do need to eat etc and they’re used to the weather conditions. The best thing about the boat part is that it’s cooler around the water lol! Will you be going to see places on the boat? Like islands etc?

It’s good you have a rest day today to catch up on some chores and hang out with your mum and the dogs when they’re back home.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm glad you got a smile from it too @Cuddlebear 😊. Baking paper is a genius idea!! Im going to share this with my group next time we make them!! This will be a game changer 😁.

Also really nice/good to hear (although not for her, but nice for me to hear!) that there is another person who also has this issue! I have always had an issue with not being able to hold on and as soon as I notice I have a teensy tiny need to pee I need to rush straight for a loo to make it in time 😅. I'm pretty good at asking shops if they have a staff toilet 🤣. And in Europe *always* have a Euro or 2 Euro coin handy to pay for the loo turnstiles entry!!

I often dont turn the light on when I get dressed (just some natural light starting to come through), and a few times ive noticed a shirt back to front or inside out 😅. Last week I went to the loo at work and realised my undies were inside out and fixed them 🤣🤣. I can totally understand how you do it mistakenly also! 😊 I often have to look for the neck tag with a number of t-shirts of cowl-neck shirts. Ive been known to put socks on inside out by accident too - but others dont notice that one lol. I guess they also dont notice my undies 😅.

Manufacturers should make revisible shirts! Then it can never be inside out! And if they make them symmetrical (no collars) then they cant be back to front either 😋.

I have a singlet top that deliberately has one side v-neck and one side scoop-neck depending which you want.

New career for us - highly accessible and versatile fashion designers. 😎

I am going to Borneo (Malaysia) and Komodo (Indonesia). I will be sure to post photos when I'm back -- hopefully of animals! Thats the focus of the trip for me, wildlife. I will be away for nearly 3 weeks.

It is lovely having my mum back, although I only saw her a few hours yesterday morning because she was in bed when I got home. But chatted this morning again 🙂 . And even though my partner unexpectedly returned the dogs home early today, I still feel I can go out as planned because she will be around the house if they want a human company (plus outdoor access).

I've spoken to her abit about my idea for next year re: taking 3 months off work if I can (esp if GP will permit me to use Sick Leave since its for my MH improvement). But of course I cant action it until later in the year cos otherwise they'd probably say "why not take it off now?" But I want to finish my current temporary placement first - and with my annual leave, I only have another 5 weeks of work (15 days) once I'm back before it ends. But it is a dilemma about if the role becomes available whether or not I apply for it if I know I will be planning to be absent for 3-6months. I dont think i will, as it doesnt feel right for them. Where as I can do that in my long-term role that I would otherwise be returning to (which i wont have been in for 5mths and they have a backfill already that might be able to be extended).

In response to: Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself

Im glad I could help out lol to prevent the rice paper rolls from sticking!

Yeah my friend has had it for a long time. I’m lucky she trusts me enough to have told me. Sometimes we do a toilet dash off! I had no idea you had to pay to use public toilets in Europe! We’re lucky ours a free. Let’s hope local councils don’t get any silly ideas of charging us here.

I’d love reversible clothing lol! That would make everything so much easier. Hahahaha on the undies! At least you didn’t put them over pants lol! 😂

Your overseas destinations are awesome. Love how you get to experience different cultures and see things we don’t have here! I’m really glad you are getting almost 3 weeks away and it’s so well deserved too. Can’t wait to see the animal photos! Wildlife is amazing and I love learning about them all around the world.

It’s awesome you’ve got your mum back and it sounds like you have a close and loving relationship. The plan re work at taking 3 months leave for mental health soubds like a really sound one to me. It’s also better timing to wait as your annual leave clicks over for the new year. I think your GP will be very understanding and agree sick leave is ok. Do you have particular ideas on what you’ll do during that time? I know you are wanting to be involved in a study.

Ah fur babies came home early today. They would have been very happy to see you and as your mums home you can still get out if they need to go loo and they have company too.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I have a few ideas of what I *might* do, but would also see at the time. Idea include:

- training my female borzoi to try to get Delta Therapy Dog accreditation, or equivalent, (then I could take her volunteer into nursing homes or schools or such things maybe)

- try to do/finish some scrapbook pages that i already have supplies for (my holiday to Botswana 10 year ago 😆😆) -- possible i could even see about doing this by setting up a social "come and scrapbook" group within community for free attendance (help other socially isolated people, cos I know its a big problem for peeps and many groups arent affordable due to charging due to NDIS assumption)

- maybe organise some M*rder Mystery Dinners with friends to use the ones I have stashed away

- continue to lose weight and improve my muscle/joint pain issues if I can afford it (this is where sick leave is important to help pay for treatment)

- do my remaining paint-by-number projects and etch-art projects I have stashed still

- setup regular boardgame sessions with friends again

And see whether doing these things can make life "content enough to live". And then also see if i do the trial/real-treatment if that helps any or not.
