Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Hey @Cuddlebear 😊 thanks for checking in. Ive been sparse here due to busy with cooking and now focus on garage sale. I think I will be pricing items all week - today and then after work each night. Unpacking as I go. But sitting and pricing gives me back and wrists a break in between. 😊 I am watching/listening to Wednesday in the background whilst doing pricing lol. Some friends recommended it; it have always liked the dark humour and gloom of Addams family. Its reasonable so far - especially as a background show (doesn't move too fast that I miss important things!)

I need to set up another table now i think. Have to move some boxes to make space for it first lol. So much stuff hahaha. But so much random stuff, kitchen things and craft things. Not much high-value items (unless the brand new tupperware counts 😅).

Chiro will be in a few weeks for me; their first available for initial consultation (longer slot).

I get massage focused on what area is most painful, or if nothing really bad then we work on my chronically tight muscles (knees, hips, etc). It is helping 😊. Apparently she is able to use more pressure now (limited by my pain tolerance).

Glad your psych appt went well, and starting to feel more comfortable with them. 😊 that was always the hardest part for me - getting used to a person and "warming up" to them.

Super good the tenancy worker is progressing the case. Im still sorry that it had to come to the need to put in to the tribunal though 😥 ; but that is what its for - when the landlord doesnt do the right thing.

Maybe it is a good thing you will be supported in PARC during the hearing schedule, as you will be around people who can help you process and stay safe.

I will have a walk later with 2 friends and dogs.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yes! I totally get that and it can be tough, hey? @AlwaysMyself

I am so glad to hear that supporting others is meaningful to you. I will absolutely tag you in other threads! 🥰

This is so lovely to read. @Cuddlebear is very kind and supportive - I can see why you both connect so well.

I am sorry you missed your friend at volunteering, but super happy to hear you've made other plans with friends this weekend! How has your weekend been btw?

I get that, it's so tough when you are someone who expresses feeling or craves more consistent connection (I am the same!), and then you're met with someone who is very loving when you see them, but doesn't require the same things... I actually think being direct is a great idea! Clarity can be such a huge relief and energy conserver!

haha I totally get the conundrum here. Maybe you can trust that they will be honest? It's up to them to set a loving boundary and if they don't that means that for now, they are okay with you reaching out. 🫶

@AlwaysMyself Good to hear from you and I am glad you are busy getting ready for garage sale. You’ll feel so much better after clearing out things you don’t need / use anymore. Sounds like a good plan to work on it today and during the week. It’s a big job to unpack boxes one by one and go through the contents.

I have seen the first season of Wednesday which I enjoyed. Like you said it’s an easy show to watch and it’s just entertaining. I’m waiting for episodes in season 2 to accumulate so I can grab a one month Netflix membership and watch the season over that month.

That’s great you’ve booked in chiropractor and so good you are keeping up with regular massages. At PARC I was told there’s an in-house physiotherapist. I’ll ask to access them help reduce the right muscles from stress.

Yeah it might be a good thing to be in PARC as I’ll have support there. Not sure how long it will take for an urgent hearing at Tribunal. But you’re right if hearing on during my stay I’ll have support there and some help to find ways that work for me to get through this sort of stuff.

Very nice you’ll see your friends and get fur babies out for a nice walk. Do your friends have dogs too? Wilbur had such a good play with some other dogs yesterday. Going to take him for a walk later at local park. Might aim for mid afternoon.

@Cuddlebear @AuntGlow

Done a lot of garage sale pricing today, which has made a real dent in it i think - esp in things that I am "i will sell it if they will pay $x, but its too sentimental/useful-in-future to sell for less; id rather keep it then". Other things I dont mind as much what we sell for. A bunch of stuff is also free because its still usable but not good condition, for example. My back is a bit sore, but not too bad - hopefully over night will also rest and reset it.

I think i spent... 9 hours today pricing/unboxing?

When I packed to move earlier in the year, I deliberately sorted stuff into "garage sale" boxes as I packed up the house.

What are you plans for tomorrow (soon to be "today") and this week?

Im back to work tomorrow. And after work - pricing garage sale & setup! Hahaha. Oh man, im so looking forward to next week when garage sale is all done and dusted - but then i'll have to get rid of anything not sold lol. But after THAT 🤣🤣.

I haven't heard back anything about either interview yet, which is very weird - the organisation policy is that all people who attend an interview must be contacted. So that means that for some reason they haven't finalised it yet?? Or else they are very slow in their process (especially for the first job interview). I am quite OK to not get either job - makes my choice easier, as I know i did my best to present myself honestly at interview, and also am quite content to keep working in the role I am in until the end of the year.

Does Wilbur have a favourite type of dog-play?

Wrestling? Chasing? Fetch? Just sniffing?

@AuntGlow do you have any pets? Sorry, I have forgotten!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Good afternoon lovely. I hope work is going well today.

Wow you made huge progress on garage sale prep. I love how you thought ahead too while packing marking boxes so you knew which ones to open and get things ready. It’s so hard to price stuff isn’t it. I think you’ve done well with the way you’ve priced things. The logic certainly makes sense to me. It will be a busy garage sale weekend for you but once it’s done you’ll have some extra $$$ and hopefully nothing or not much left to clear out.

Today I have my support worker for 3 hours. I need to buy a garden hose today and will take fur baby for a nice walk. Waiting to hear from APARC today about admission too. Not a particularly exciting day. I’ve got a lot of heart palpitations and feeling dread so trying to steady myself and will help to get out a bit.

Wilbur loves snifari a lot. He likes chasing the squeaker ball and loves squeeky toys. What about your babies?

It can take ages to hear back about interviews. Some employers are slow slow slow. The good thing is you are happily employed so have an income while you wait to hear.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Good evening @AlwaysMyself,

Wow, that sounds like a very busy and productive day! 9 hours though, oof. I would be exhausted! Have you done anything to rest and take care of your back today?

PS: It was super smart to plan ahead when you moved. 👏

How was work for you? Oh, and what do you do? (I don't think we have discussed this yet!)

"I am quite OK to not get either job - makes my choice easier, as I know i did my best to present myself honestly at interview, and also am quite content to keep working in the role I am in until the end of the year."

This is really lovely to read! It sounds like you found a real sense of groundedness and confidence going in to your interviews. I am very curious to hear about the outcome. Would you follow up or are you okay waiting for an answer?

I do not have pets!! I have a hard time taking care of myself. 😂 But definitely one day. A little chihuahua would be perfect.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Cuddlebear did going for a walk and the shops for a hose help reduce the anxiety? (Assuming the dread and palpitations are anxiety symptoms?)

Oh, what a cutie Wilbur! My fur babies love toys too. The older x-breed loves toys that fit in his mouth and squeak (balls or soft flat squeaky ones) - he will prance around very proudly squeaking one. The younger one loves many types of toys - plastic, plush, squeaky, crackly, tennis balls, ropes... she often brings a toy up to you to play tug-and-fetch. They also think each other's face/neck/legs are great chew-toys too. 😅

Im curious why a chihuahua is your ideal dog @AuntGlow ? 😊 looks? Personality? Energy level? Memories?

Any word from APARC today?

Did some more garage sale prep this evening. But didnt get to do as much as I had planned, as something else even more urgent cropped up and took a few hours.

@AuntGlow rest? Self-care? What's that? 😅🤣. I will rest after this weekend. I will take tomorrow evening off I think, as I have a few things on after work tomorrow. I have been taking care of myself by using heat patches for my back pain over the weekend, and a wrist support to reduce pain. That's self-care right?? 😅

But yes, I have small things too like watching Netflix whilst doing the preparation work, or watching a tv show for 30min before bed this evening. And eating ice cream. 🤫

Not sure if I will reach out soon re: interview outcome. Normally I would, as it can be good to get constructive feedback, as well as it sending a subtle indirect reminder to them that it is important to notify interviewees. However I am so busy lately both at work and at home that its not in my current priorities to spend time on chasing them up or organising a time for a feedback chat.

As for what i do for work @AuntGlow , it can be hard to explain and it can change depending on the current needs. I work with public health data; sometimes figuring out what reports people need created and how we can do that, sometimes looking at the quality (or lack of) of the clinical data, sometimes investigating and documenting the 'rules' on data metrics and what data fields actually mean from a clinician perspective to ensure it matches how it is used by people building reports. Pretty much "whatever needs to be done within health data that doesnt require programming languages" might be my scope. 😅 I dont want to do more programming code work, so I have deliberately sought roles moving away from that realm - which works well because most of the technical-minded data people are programmers rather than soft-skills and paperwork.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Good morning lovely. How are you today? Last day of work week for you. You’ve had a busy week juggling work and garage sale plus your other commitments. Did you have volunteering this week? If so how did it go?

It’s so good watching fur babies play and enjoy bringing us toys to play with them. It’s so entertaining having two to play with one another and they keep each other company while you are out. 🙂

It does help a little when I’m out. It also gives me a sense of having done something tangible. Summer is the worst for me as I am badly affected by the heat. But my support worker does have a car so in my shifts with her we can go out into air conditioned places.

APARC contacted me yesterday and I’ll be going in tomorrow morning. Feeling nervous and hoping it goes well. Big change for me and change like this can be unsettling. Yesterday I had my sleep study results and got a fair bit of not so good news. I’m filled with worry a today and it’s not easy to settle.

Will you have a rest tonight? I know you’ve been working on pricing and prep for garage sale. How’s your pain going after having to do boxes and move things about?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Second last week of volunteering yesterday @Cuddlebear . Last week next week. Yesterday and next week sessions are celebration and goodbye sessions.

Looking forward to not working Thurs/Fri, but still have a few errands to do. But also more garage sale prep lol.

Thankfully not much heavy lifting to do now - more opening boxes and taking out individual items (which arent too heavy) and then putting them out somewhere and pricing. But there are a few boxes of things in the house still that I need to carry out - I've been using a wrist support to help limit the strain a bit.

I struggle with the heat too. Hate going out in summer / over 24 degrees.

Hoping the doctors can treat the sleep study result? Better sleep is always important.

I think i need to switch cpap mask because mine is a bit stretched now and leaking a bit 😬 which annoys me.

Wow going in tomorrow! If i dont hear from you I wont worry - i will assume you are settling in there and possibly have restricted internet time or are busy with programs and f2f people! 😊

Sending my best wishes with you! Remember to pack them in your virtual bag 😄

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello! I hope you have finished work and are doing something nice for yourself considering the busy week you’ve had.

Ooh I like how you will have celebration sessions with the young people you work with as a volunteer. What type of stuff do you do?

You sound so organised to me getting all the garage sale stuff ready for the weekend. Is it for Saturday and Sunday or one of those days? It’s good there’s not much heavy lifting as it takes away risk from increased pain.

Yeah the heat is awful. I get very unwell from it and really have to keep in air conditioning.

The doctor wants me to see dentist for a mouth guard for the sleep apnoea. I also have restless leg syndrome, no REM sleep whatsoever, sleep paralysis, nightmares and narcolepsy. The sleep specialist attributes the restless leg syndrome and the absence of REM sleep to the mental illness medicine I am on. They said it’s important to change meds. I’m on an SNRI thats known to be extremely difficult to taper off. I’ve done a fair bit of scientific research on this and tapering off this best practice is over a year and will require multiple psychiatric admissions. On the other hand the restless leg syndrome alone is waking me up 60 times an hour. A complete lack of REM sleep in the sleep cycle is extremely harmful to health and shortens life too. It has a catastrophic impact on mental health but also on many other parts of the body / brain. I have no idea how I’m going to resolve this. My opinion of psychiatrists is extremely low and frankly I don’t trust them. I’m upset with my GP for putting me on medicine with such tragic side effects. It’s an impossible situation.

Im going to pack my stuff for APARC before dinner tonight. They don’t restrict internet access at APARC. I’ll be able to engage here in between group sessions and outings. I’ll definately update and I’ll take some photos of my room and backyard 🙂

Whats on for you tonight?
