Coping with birthday blues

Coping with birthday blues

Hi everyone, just after some tips on surviving birthdays, when it is an anniversary of many painful memories, when it is a time that you reflect on where you were in the past, what you had, what has been lost and where you thought you would be by now.

I look back and I'm faced with how bad things are compared to previous birthdays.

I don't want to be the focus for the day, I'm not in the place or with the people I want to be with for my birthday.

Unfortunately being in the place I long to be is beyond my control, and I am practising patience and doing all I can, all I am allowed to do until I can be there.

I want to make happy memories, to overshadow all the bad anniversaries of my birth.

I had planned on leaving the house super early and escaping into nature for the day, then returning late at night. To escape being around those whom have played a major part in why things are as bad as they are now.

However with the wonders of technology I'm anxious about receiving messages from those in my life that I allowed to cause so much destruction and pain (family) and not receiving messages from those whom I crave to hear from (those I love and care for).

I know having expectations of people leaves me open to disappointment and pain, but when those people are your own children and partners it's hard not to have minimal expectations at least. You know the old story of, if you did to them what they did to you, you would be seen as the worst person in the world, but it's fine for them to do it.

Previous years have often been me faking being happy, setting a good example to my children, putting my feelings aside, as even though I don't think my birthday is a special day, I accept that to those who care about me, it is a special day.

Unfortunately as I've grown older (poorer and more resistant to being used and manipulated) the love shown to me by those that care has been far from caring. For example my youngest (11yr old) was being picked up by her step dad and only wished me a happy birthday for tomorrow after he wished me it.

I assumed my children would visit, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. My youngest isn't (due to some children's card game event) hence why she got her mum to drop her off today, so needless to say it was a pleasant surprise, albeit a triggering surprise (I try to forget that she usually visits when she's trying to escape boredom, or doing something she doesn't like, not just to visit). My middle child didn't last year even though his sisters came (I can't even remember the exact excuse, but I know it wasn't anything serious or urgent).

Re: Coping with birthday blues

Sorry to read about your struggles around your birthday @Former-Member

Anniversaries can certainly be hard.

I know many people struggle with birthdays and not just because they are one year older.

I very recently had a birthday.

One person rang me and I got messages from my sport team and then later from my mother and brother that was it. One phonce call and texts that's it.

I usually try to just ignore my birthday and don't usually tell people. So I don't have parties, dinners or even cakes. I just treat it like another day of the year because it's easy to try and forget it.

I don't have children, so I don't have the grief of them not acknowledging me. My nephews and niece did not get in touch with me. So I have some understanding of what you are feeling.

Sorry I can't say anything more exciting than that.

For me, getting out in nature would be good definitely

Before I had my dogs to do things with. They have both died in recent years - the last one only about 6 weeks before my birthday.

So, I suppose it's really up to you, whether you celebrate it in your own way - go to movies or something, or just ignore it

Re: Coping with birthday blues

Thanks @Till23, my condolences on your fur babies, that makes anniversaries even harder due to that being a trigger. Also many happy returns for your birthday (even if I have wished you happy birthday already on the birthday thread)

Re: Coping with birthday blues

I did not tell anyone on the forums my birthday @Former-Member so no one knew.

I mentioned it in one of my posts on my thread in the evening and a couple of people picked up on it through a reply which I tried to shut down.

I don't want anyone to say anything really as I'd rather forget it.

This year was also hard because my father passed away just before my birthday last year and his funeral was the day after my birthday. So it was one year anniversary of that

As you get older, you have more time to accumulate other things happening or being near your birthday

I hope you are able to move past it once the day is over, but it sounds like the day itself is going to be hard.

I hope you find some nice distractions

@Till23 Thankyou, and I pray life gives you things to create happy future birthday memories. I know it's what I hope for myself.

Re: Coping with birthday blues

@Till23 Also my condolences on the passing of your father, Boxing day is the trigger for me and my dad, as that was the last day he was home before being taken away in an ambulance and passing 2 weeks later in peter mac (cancer hospital here in Melbourne) It's been 4 years, but the public holiday still triggers the memories.

Re: Coping with birthday blues

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad @Former-Member

My father died of cancer at my house, I looked after him at my house for the last 6 months of his life so I will always have that strong association with my birthday. He died a couple of weeks after his birthday.

I hope you are able to make the most of your birthday

Re: Coping with birthday blues

hi @Former-Member i think to treat yourself with a heap of generosity and kindness over those hard days, and in my experience, i wish i'd not tried so frantically to avoid painful memories almost kidding myself that i was extra fine. It's okay if it hurts x
