Fortunate

Fortunate

I have seen many writings from so many people but don't feel that I'm in the same league. While I've served for many years I feel my mental health is intact and have sustained many injuries that I manage regularly. Fortunately I have continued working a reservist and feel a lot of satisfaction from being a tradesman using my former qualifications in a museum restoration environment.

I'm not a writer but maybe just trying to recall some of my experiences could help to put something on paper.

Re: Fortunate

@MtLittleJoe Nice to hear from you. Sounds like you had a great career.

@Oaktree i find that having a commitment to someone else is a great motivator - and it’s always nice to have company. I hear you about the excuses though - for me it’s always work. My job is quite busy and I can always work longer

I am a parkrun fan though. I don’t run - I generally just walk. But I love the routine of starting my weekend with something active and outdoors. Hmmm - there’s so much I could say about parkrun that perhaps it needs its own thread

I tried walking at Parkrun but I felt really bad for holding everyone up at the end. Also there are snakes in the summer where I go.

Re: Fortunate

You had me at snakes @Oaktree

although I will remind you that at parkrun the tail walker’s job is literally to come last. The longest it’s taken me as tail walker was about 90 minutes and I didn’t mind. Most people who volunteer to be tail walker understand that sometimes it takes longer. Although there are definitely some parkruns where slower walkers feel more comfortable.

Re: Fortunate

Parkrun is fairly big where I live. As for myself my preference is for cycling. Regardless of the choices some of us need to participate in a type of sport that we like. The majority of people I think do socialise, it's just difficult sometimes to talk and find similar interests.

I'm moving from a lovely suburban spot in Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast looking for a different life surrounded by great locations on the beach and hinterland sites. I'd imagine there will be lots of different things to see.

Re: Fortunate

Totally agree @MtLittleJoe - if it’s something you enjoy it makes it more likely you’ll get out and do it. Less like PT and more like enjoyment and wellbeing

Re: Fortunate

Where is your Park Run and do you do any prep before each walk?

@MtLittleJoe @Magpie22

We can’t say where we go for Parkrun due to anonymity reasons. I just decided to give Parkrun another go. The only problem is that I am not a morning person and the Parkrun is at 8am. I ordered a plastic barcode card so I am committed now.

Re: Fortunate

Oh I wasn't aware you couldn't say where the Parkrun is, forgive me. This morning session is almost everywhere these days. Fortunately my running days are over, thank goodness, but walking is much better. I heard during the week that 7000 steps a day is very good for us. Usually my walking equats to almost 6000, so going to have to step it up a bit. How many steps do you think walking on Saturdays equats too?

Park run is awesome.

Re: Fortunate

@MtLittleJoe there are parkruns everywhere, you’re right. And I like to travel around. I have done them in four states/territories so far and hoping to tick off the others as well.
I don’t do any prep - I’m usually driving around looking for a park up to close to start time because I’m always running late so no time for warm up 🤣

And I’m really not a runner. I do a mix of walking and shuffling but it takes a good 45 min - or more if I’m with a walking buddy.
I always say I’m going to do more walking but I’m pretty busy in my job and I’m also usually tired. Parkrun is my only regular exercise but I’m working on adding more in.
