How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

hi @AuntGlow during the afternoon on Father's day i took myself off to my bedroom while everyone was resting after a big lunch. it was good just to have time to myself.

I am crocheting which has been helping.

how are you?

Hey @BlueBay 🥰

You know, sometimes finding a space to regulate and come back to ourselves is the best act of self-care, especially on a vulnerable day.

ooh, what are you crotcheting? 🤩

I am well, there's lots going on at the moment actually. haha I am working on creating more balance and focusing on my physical health. 🧘‍♀️

@AuntGlow

finding a balance can sometimes es be hard.

I crochet handbags, scarves, blankets, headbands, beanies, toy octopus and worms. I have my stock at a great cafe who takes 30% off sale but I don’t pay any rent. It’s been almost a year and I’ve sold lots of things.
trying to think of Xmas ideas!!

crochet helps calm me. I learn a lot through YouTube.

How do you get rid of nightmares?
last night had a horrible nightmare that is still on my mind.

Yes, I hear you! What helps you with balance? @BlueBay

Oh my goodness, that's sooo cool!! Do you have pictures?!

I love that you learned through YouTube, that's brilliant.

That must have been really overwhelming... I actually don't know, but I can imagine that working on subconscious things, like fear and shame, could help to reduce the frequency of nightmares?

Could you bring this up with your new psychologist? 💛

Hey @BlueBay 🥰

I am so sorry to hear that you're not feeling great right now... that 'not caring' sensation and feeling disconnected can be so heavy. When did you notice it come about?

Often, when I feel this way, something that connects me to myself or others is really helpful in shifting me out of this place (usually whatever I am avoiding most!). Does anything come to mind?

Perhaps being here is what you're needing too? 💛

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hi @AuntGlow sorry i didn't reply last night. i ended up taking a med and went to bed, slept quite well considering.

i noticed the dissociation in the morning doing some things and it didn't feel real. it was like i was looking through a movie of what i was doing. (not sure it makes sense)

and from there i went into 'i don't care about anything anymore'.

i haven't dissociated for a while and yesterdays was scary. i was even driving and it didn't feel real.

today i feel sick in my gut, lots of pain. so today will be an easy day
