First EMDR session

First EMDR session

I had my first EMDR session today for my CPTSD.

Feeling really emotional afterwards and a bit disorientated.

Kept playing one of my trauma's over and over. I was feeling less stressed as the appointment went on. I went from two abusers in a room at the beginning, to my big Irish friend and Jason Bourne at the end carrying me out after killing the abusers. WTF. I feel like I was in a dream.

Just don't know how to understand what just happened. My head is spinning. I'm really confused right now.

Re: First EMDR session

Hi @Ed1975

I have CPTSD and have been doing EMDR with my psych.

It is totally normal have lots of emotions and disorientated afterwards, especially since it was your first session.

I know when I've done EMDR I can feel exhausted afterwards. There have been times where I've come home and gone straight to bed. There are times where I feel so confused afterwards.

I have had some really strange outcomes too, especially when I rewrite the ending to a scenario.

Please remember that we all respond very differently. There is no "right" way. Also please know that not every session will end like this.

Also please know that I am around to answer any questions you may have, or if you just need some support.

Re: First EMDR session

From my understanding EMDR gets you to simulate as if you were in REM sleep, when dreams happen to help integrate those traumatic memories. It makes sense that you had the memories and your brain is helping you heal via a "dream". It's meant to ease and that means it is working! But do tell your emdr facilitator.
