Rumination and unhelpful coping strategies. TW: Addictive tendencies

Rumination and unhelpful coping strategies. TW: Addictive tendencies

I struggle with rumination as part of Bipolar, OCD, CPTSD. I am also ND and have ADHD and ASD. I have been struggling to function and my productivity has been declining, and I'm often finding myself stuck in rumination for several hours each day. I usually struggle with focus and motivation on a good day, but I think the stress is adding to it. Not being able to do things is also creating stress. I feel like my ADHD is feeding into my mental illness and vice versa. I am finding myself wanting to turn to things that will make things harder in the long term. I know developing addictive behaviours may give me relief in the short run, it'll calm my brain, help me think clearer and make it easier to concentrate on tasks. I am also aware this will create health problems in the long run. I need something to calm my brain and help me function without having negative consequences. I find once I am able to do things, my mental illness symptoms get better. Does anyone have healthy ways to cope with rumination, mental illness and ND? I'm currently on bipolar meds (my pdoc doesn't want me on ADHD meds) which helps me stabilise my mood to a certain degree and I'm trying to work on myself in therapy, but I am still struggling a lot

@AuntGlow I have two cups of matcha a day. I need it everyday, I get withdrawals if I don’t drink it.

It is very hard to sit with trauma and anxiety, I know it’s a skill that gets easier with time.

Today has been a crazy one, my GP thinks I have a sinus infection, so I’m hoping I’ll feel better soon. Physical pain can affect mental health. I also need to get enough sleep tonight. Adequate sleep is key when I am feeling agitated. Lack of sleep causes nervous energy

Do you just buy matcha powder @creative_writer ? I've never tried it in a hot drink

@tyme yes I buy my own matcha powder and put it in warm water. Matcha is best at 70-80c instead of in boiling water.

You can prepare it however you want, my sister prefers adding a bit of sugar, honey is also a natural sweetener. I add saffron strands to mine

That makes sense. Apparently, it's a good source of caffeine! @creative_writer

It really is - I am still working on this too. 💛

Oh no, that must feel really uncomfortable for you. It seems like sleep will help you with all that you are going through at the moment.

Would love to hear what else is going on for you. Have you been doing anything that is making you feel joyful or light? ✨

@AuntGlow it provides more balanced caffeine, the l’theanine helps it feel more chill. I take l’theanine supplement by itself before bed.

I’m going to go to bed soon. Might try the magnesium cream to help with aches and relax me before bed. I just got a new one for joint and muscle aches. I tend to be sore due to hypermobility.

I have my volunteer work shift tomorrow, haven’t volunteered for a bit, but I think it’s going to be helpful in my recovery. Volunteering can create sense of purpose

Ah, that's so interesting to know. Have you ever been curious about naturopathy or Chinese medicine? I feel like that would be up your ally! @creative_writer

Okay, please let me know how volunteering goes. It absolutely helps with recovery and a sense of purpose. I am sure you will feel lighter and more connected afterwards. 💛

hey @creative_writer did you decide to attend last night's social zoom?

hope the prayer break will help ground some of the anxieties too. that makes sense about the sinus and migraine pain feeding off of each other - hoping you get some relief soon 💗

@AuntGlow I haven't tried naturopathy or Chinese medicine. I have consulted a naturopath through email , but she thought it would be too complicated with all the meds I am on. Even with supplements, I need to be careful with what I use. I would have to find a naturopath who would be willing to work with me with my current meds.

I have the volunteer work later today, after lunch. It's a good solid four hours.

@rav3n I did attend the social event, I barely spoke and didn't stay the whole time. I was drained and the computer screen was painful. Attending the event was a start. I've started the meds for the sinus infection, I am doing better than yesterday, but it will take it's time

the fact that you attended the social event for a bit is already a win @creative_writer it's hard connecting online, but you tried and that's what counts!! glad to hear you're feeling a lil better than yesterday 💗
