Rumination and unhelpful coping strategies. TW: Addictive tendencies

Rumination and unhelpful coping strategies. TW: Addictive tendencies

I struggle with rumination as part of Bipolar, OCD, CPTSD. I am also ND and have ADHD and ASD. I have been struggling to function and my productivity has been declining, and I'm often finding myself stuck in rumination for several hours each day. I usually struggle with focus and motivation on a good day, but I think the stress is adding to it. Not being able to do things is also creating stress. I feel like my ADHD is feeding into my mental illness and vice versa. I am finding myself wanting to turn to things that will make things harder in the long term. I know developing addictive behaviours may give me relief in the short run, it'll calm my brain, help me think clearer and make it easier to concentrate on tasks. I am also aware this will create health problems in the long run. I need something to calm my brain and help me function without having negative consequences. I find once I am able to do things, my mental illness symptoms get better. Does anyone have healthy ways to cope with rumination, mental illness and ND? I'm currently on bipolar meds (my pdoc doesn't want me on ADHD meds) which helps me stabilise my mood to a certain degree and I'm trying to work on myself in therapy, but I am still struggling a lot

@creative_writer i hear that, it does sound exhausting and tough. is it specific areas of your body that you feel the discomfort? like it is your chest, stomach, back, etc?

does things like changing into comfier clothes or changing your posture/position helps settle any of the discomfort?

@rav3n I’m feeling it in a few areas rn. I don’t want to say too much because it’ll open too much and may trigger other people. It’s SA related.

I was thinking of snuggling under covers, it helps me feel safer and warmer. My bed sheets also feel nice. I’m super sensitive to fabrics so made sure I got comfy ones, even though there were a bit more expensive. Not a fan of polyester stuff. I am currently wearing lounge wear right now, so already comfy clothing wise. I changed into new clothes after my afternoon shower

@creative_writer oh yep ofc, i understand where you're coming from.

my skin doesn't like polyester too much either! glad you've got some fabrics and clothes that help you feel comfy, hopefully it helps a bit in reducing the discomfort in your body.

i have to head off now, take care and good night. i really hope that sitting with the flashbacks starts to get a lil more comfy soon 💜

Hello @creative_writer!

How are your heart and mind feeling today? 🥰

@AuntGlow I’m doing better psychologically, the body flashbacks feel less intense, still present, but not as torturous. I’m not feeling well physically, felt a bit of an increase in symptoms on Friday. Sinuses are still clogged, I’m going to the doctor tomorrow.

How are you today?

@creative_writer I am so glad that things are feeling better for you! Do you know what might be helping?

Still feeling sick must be hard though... how have you been taking care of yourself? 💛

@AuntGlow I don’t know if I’m getting body releases, sometimes it feels worse than other times. I was doing better earlier today, but it might also be the fatigue. I’m still sick. I was able to concentrate earlier in the day, matcha +saffron help. Just not sure it is a good idea to have caffeinated drinks this late, I find saffron a bit activating and can’t have much later in the day. The extra caffeine may activate me too much, though in moderation is helps a ton for anxiety. Maybe it’s the dopamine. I read that apparently matcha exerts antidepressant effects through dopaminergic system. There probably is a connection with ADHD and deprsssion and anxiety. ND are more likely to experience mental health struggles.

I’ve just had strong ginger and lemon tea (2 teabags). I think the body release is happening rn, the only way through it to give it a bit of attention and learn to sit with it without getting overly absorbed, pretty much goes against my instinct. It’s hard when the OCD thoughts are firing

I think I am getting a big body release rn, my body feels so uncomfy. Just when I thought it was getting easier
