Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Ru-bee sometimes it’s wise to change GPs. Medical system is designed for men. I also feel like young people get taken less seriously. This GP also feels more approachable, sort of informal and gives off older brotherly vibes. I’m tackling my physical and mental health from multiple angles nutrition, exercise and specialist. I also have my psych and pdoc for mental health support.

I think I’ll have PRN with dinner. It’s just getting really hard. I’ve reached out to a helpline twice because today has been especially difficult.

Thank you for chatting. I hope you have a restful day 💖

Good evening @creative_writer, ✨🌛

I 100% agree. Honestly, you already have so much wonderful insight. I think that working towards a practice of self-trust would help so much here (which I know is really hard when we are anxious, but I think it's absolutely possible for you).

Could you explore EMDR again at all? I am just thinking, maybe you can extend your sessions with your GP for more specialised help (sometimes they do this on a chronic condition management plan).

Gosh, your pain sounds like it would be a lot to manage as well... what helps you the most right now?

And regarding your mental health support, would you explore anything self-directed/online? I can look into some things for you.

I think I have sent Kristin Neff to you before, but in case I haven't, her work would be so suited to you! Self-Compassion Practices: Cultivate Inner Peace and Joy - Self-Compassion

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@AuntGlow my current psych doesn’t do EMDR, I would have to go to another psych. I did EMDR through my last psych.

I’ve used my chronic condition management plan for physio for managing chronic pain. I’m just getting tests done, and will be seeing a rheumatologist next month.

I’m open to exploring online options. I’m with SANE’s Recovery Club. I have to wait until 25th of November to be eligible for the Guided Service.

I’ve seen the article before, not sure if you ever attached it to one of your posts

Re: Functioning with ADHD

I know it takes a lot out of us to start adding more therapies/supports, but maybe we can put the intention out into the universe and see if anything comes your way? ☺️ @creative_writer

I am glad you are utilising it for your pain management, that's really good to know!

Okay, wonderful. How have you been finding Recovery Club?

Let me know if you decide to explore any of her practices, they are in alignment with the inner-child self-soothing work we have talked about.

Oh! Also, how are your writing workshops going?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@AuntGlow I could consider it, and if something comes up.

I’m still in pain, I feel like I’m still missing something, maybe it’ll become clearer with time.

The recovery club has been good. I might look into her inner child practices.

I’ve had the PRN tonight, I’m hoping I start feeling better soon, it all feels so overwhelming

I feel like maybe I should go to bed in order to remain safe. I don’t feel like being here anymore and the urges are too strong. My mind wants to convince me everyone will be better off without me. I’ll do my skincare and then head off to bed.

Hey @creative_writer ,

I can see your mind is telling you all those things. Remember, it doesn't mean those voices are telling the truth.

Please take care of yourself, and hopefully we can unpack it a bit more when you are feeling fresher.

We appreciate you. You are NOT weak. You are not fragile.

You are a fighter.

Hugs.

I think going to bed sounds like a really good safety plan. These thoughts really can become louder at night... but just because they are louder, doesn't make them true. @creative_writer

We are always here if you need to come back and chat. Remember that crisis lines are always there for you too. I will be back tomorrow from 10am. ☺️💛

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@tyme and @AuntGlow I had to reach out twice yesterday to a helpline, it wasn’t a great day. It’s hard living with bipolar and cptsd. I feel a bit better but most likely will need another PRN. I know I need to work on sitting with discomfort of body flashbacks when they are happening a lot of the time everyday. It is hard because the emotions come up over and over again. I try to reassure myself it’s okay and to persist with trying, but sometimes I do get super exhausted and it’s hard not to want to disappear. I am able to resist the urges right now, I’m hoping it doesn’t get worse later today

Re: Functioning with ADHD

Good morning @creative_writer,

Firstly, I am glad you reached out to a helpline when you needed it most, that is exactly what they are there for. Was it helpful for you?

I understand this so much, it is utterly exhausting being triggered over and over again... this is why titration is important. Start with sitting with it for 10 seconds, then 20, then 30. Exposing yourself to too much discomfort at once will flood your nervous system, so of course your body and mind will be overwhelmed. 💛

Thank you for letting us know how you're feeling, maybe we can work together to keep you feeling safe?

What's on your agenda today? ☺️
