Losing my daughter to mental health disturbance

Losing my daughter to mental health disturbance

My first post and looking for insight and hope.

My adult daughter over the past 6mths had two manic episodes which for all the family has been very scary. She was admitted to hospital and is now on medication - the first lots was not right for her hence the second episode - we are waiting to see about the new medication. She is not able to really acknowledge that she actually had a mental disturbance/ breakdown and has a bit of an story of how she ended up in the hospital but she has been following medical advice to take the prescribed medication so far - so on some level she must be accepting she needs to take it.

I am now sure we or the doctors are really at the point of understanding fully what sent her down this path - or what she really has in a clinical sense - though she had a lot of stuff going on in her life for the past 18mths. She is very health conscious and does not drink alcohol or take recreational or other types of drugs.

She has always been a super caring and loving person and mum - super gentle soul. Currently, even under the medication, its hard to have a two way conversation with her and some members of the family have noted she has become a bit mean in her nature. This is just so not the person/ daughter I have known for nearly 37years. I realise this will be a long journey with her and we need to be patient. I live interstate from her but have spent many weeks trying to provide support to her, the children and her husband - as too her siblings to varying degrees.

My biggest fear is losing her to this mental heath disruption and/or the jeopardy of her losing other important relationships before she recovers.

@howcanwehelp63 my heart goes out to you. Your child is always, your child, no matter what age.

My closest friend is currently going through the same experience with her son.

For him there is no recovery. It is medication management for the rest of his life.

My SANE forum friend @tyme is awesome and has lifelong experience in this field.

My friend @Shaz51 is the best mother ever.

I admire and trust both these people. They got me through very tough times.

You aren’t alone @howcanwehelp63

Stigma and shame around mental health is still a huge issue. Keep treasuring your relationship with your daughter. She may be going through experiences which are stressful and experiencing disappointment in many things. I do hope her. Clinical team does help her work through things and not go the easy path for them of just prescribing pills. Real interventions require more than meds, though family often are desperate to trust and hope it will be a quick fix. There can arise a power dynamic where people make one person the “identified patient “ and don’t really work through issues. Mental health is tricky for us all to navigate. Good luck to you and your family.

Re: Losing my daughter to mental health disturbance

@howcanwehelp63 I’m deeply sorry you, your daughter and family are travelling this path. It’s exhausting, overwhelming, terrifying and all consuming so please encourage your son in law, family members as well as yourself to remember to take good care of yourselves as yes it can and may be a long journey ahead and you will all need to be well for each other. Hope is something you must never lose. I pray the new meds your daughter is on have a positive effect. Please take one day at a time and try not to focus on where this will lead as believe me all that does is create more fear anxiety and the feeling of helplessness in not being able to “fix” this and as mums that’s what we want to do. It’s such a hard journey and my heart truly goes out to you and yours. Keep the lines of communication open as much as possible with your daughter even if brief just to reassure her of your love and to remind her she is not alone in this. Please don’t hesitate to touch base if you need to.🙏❤️ A huge hug from one mother to another.

Re: Losing my daughter to mental health disturbance

My heart goes out to you. I’ve had severe manic episodes myself, but I’ve also managed an episode in my adult daughter and I know it’s super scary as the mum. I’ve also gone back to uni, got a psychology degree and am now a student doctor. My take… your daughter will recover, it might mean medication for the rest of her life, might not, but either way, recovery is possible, even with severe illnesses - I’m living it. Mania is a huge shock to the system and it will probably take her some time to process what’s happened to her. Don’t underestimate the shame that’s usually there too. You’re probably grieving the loss of the daughter you had too - think about support for yourself, whether trundling to a GP and saying you have an adjustment disorder re your family circumstances, so can you please have a mental health care plan for subsidised psychology sessions which you can use as support for yourself - whether that might be helpful, if you don’t have the finances to fund psychology yourself?

Your daughter needs your support. She needs a fabulous private psychiatrist (and a psychologist) herself, often rarer than hens teeth, as she navigates what the last few months mean for her life. She still is your daughter, she still is the same person, but she’s probably been through some pretty traumatic experiences and it will take her - and you - a while to process them. Take care.

“An unquiet mind” is a fantastic book by Kay Jamison about manic depression which is a good read, by a Professor of Psychiatry who has a manic illness. Always recommend it. All the best.
