Going though an acute phase of mental illness

Going though an acute phase of mental illness

Hi guys,

I was wondering what do you you guys do when you are going though a really tough time with your mental health? I nearly got admitted into hospital not too long ago but I received help from my doctor so don't need to be admitted at the moment. My brain can't take on anything complicated. I can't read much. I can't color in and I can't even play a video game without getting overwhelmed. Any tips?

hey @Bumblebee2 sorry to hear you had a rough time recently. i find that sometimes the tools that worked in one instance don't always work the same in another - i like to have a bunch of different strategies to rotate between.

to me, i tend to move between feeling super anxious with nervous energy to feeling super low, with no energy. when i'm experiencing the anxiety symptoms, i find physical movements best - whether its going for walks, jumping around/dancing to my fav songs, going to the gym, etc. for the low mood, i like to do things that bring me comfort like watching movies/tv shows i like, sitting cosily in my safe spaces like my bedroom and eating my comfort foods (usually dessert) or doing my fav hobbies (singing, crafts, etc).

journalling has been a massive help too - figuring out what emotions i'm feeling and why helps me understand myself and my body better, and just recognising the emotion itself takes down half my overwhelm sometimes. oh and i forgot my fav one - talking to my psych, i like letting out the heavy feelings to her.

just taking things one small step at a time, and being kind to yourself can play a big part - remembering that its okay to slow down and take my time. here if you wanna chat more 💙

Recently I’ve found doodling my emotions with stick images of key people in my life very helpful for releasing my pent up emotions, you can give them speech bubbles if you like too. I give them round faces to draw their emotion on.

if you’re well enough check into Maritza Parra at Heartwork Journalling on Facebook for info on how to do it. Or just muddle through yourself.

hopefully helpfully,

hey @Bumblebee2 i myself had a experience being in hospital and feeling that disconnection , it can be challenging but hold hope .

i found my self looking in somatic exercises like somatic dancing i use videos on youtube to help me release tension in the body.

eft tapping is another small therapy that you could try its helps to move emotions through the body but while keeping the mind present through physical tapping on parts of the body while speaking statements that acknowledge your present feelings .

i hope your able to find somme ease from the overwhelmed and remind yourself that you are resilient and always have support in these forums.
