Talking through trauma and PTSD

Tillogram

Tillogram

I am wondering if anyone has any strategies that have helped them to banish the “Not Good Enough” thoughts.

It is apparently a common problem for those with childhood trauma (likely other things as well).

I think I try pretty hard to surmount this feeling. I have completed university degrees, I have worked pretty much continuously from age 14yo. I try to participate in sport and different other activities. I volunteer.

Maybe “doing things” is not the correct strategy (although it does act as a distraction).

I still think I am not good enough.

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @NightFury sorry late response, I've been busy today.

Hopefully, I have got my roof fixed.

The roofer came today and did a fair bit of work.

Of course it's not raining now to test it! But it might rain on monday.

I don't want it to rain in general, but I want to test the roof.

I have also been making a presentation for my sport club to give a presentation to another organisation, so that's been taking me a while.

I hope you don't mind me adding to your posts the other day.

I'm also keeping a bit of a low profile on forums, because I think I have unintentionally annoyed some people.

So, I feel maybe I should just post less responses, or anything really.

There's no point posting if it's just annoying people.

Re: Not Good Enough

@Till23 you don't annoying me...

I hope you have managed to get the roof fixed, especially if there's more rain coming. It sounds like it's promising though - especially if they did a lot of work on it.

A presentation? Wow. You're very brave to be able to do things like that. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of people and speak.

No need to apologise for the late replies..at all...because I've just replied even later.

Re: Not Good Enough

Umm @NightFury don’t you stand up in front of people and speak everyday. Isn’t that what teaching is?

🤣

I used to be terrified of doing it, but I got better as I got older. Teaching at uni helped a lot.
How has your day been?

I hope it was better than the other day, when you were finding it a bit difficult.
I had so much distraction today, it was good to get away from my thoughts. I was surprised at how good my concentration was actually.
I saw you put up the “barriers” thread. You’ve really been amazing at reaching out and sharing your story these last couple of weeks. It seems like you’re really trying to propel yourself forward and find solutions for yourself. I’m also glad you are getting a little bit of help from forums and also in the guided recovery program.

I better get to sleep as I’m up early for sport and then there’s a club meeting.

Hope you have a nice Sunday

Re: Not Good Enough

@Till23 good morning....

It's a different thing though, talking in front of adults.

My day yesterday was busy. I wanted to rest, but felt all kinds of stirred up and kept finding distractions and things to do.

I was awake at 4 am, so did three hours of study, followed by the housework. Study brought on a wave of anxiety and so I tried to contact a support line, then freaked out and disconnected. At least I tried, I guess. First time trying...giving myself points for that. Then I knew I needed to keep busy so I went to the supermarket, had a chat with a friend and organised coffee for next weekend. Managed to get myself motivated and contacted my wood person, who then delivered a load of wood. I spent the afternoon stacking it. Following that, I finished a drawing the kids challenged me to draw.

The wood stacking helped me to physically settle enough to get a little bit of rest and relaxation. Though, I slept badly...again.

This morning I have to fit all of my things in - write a blog post, study and wash my dreads - before going to pick up my niece because I have her until 9 pm tonight.

Good luck with your sports today!

Re: Not Good Enough

@Till23 Happy Sunday!

I am glad to know your psychologist has a good understanding of these techniques. It's helpful to know what resonates with you too. ☺️

Oooh, I can imagine this would be very stimulating for your mind. Have you done any crosswords today?

Yes, I absolutely hear you, there is so much joy in their sense of wonder. It can be hard as adult humans to enact our own sense of curiosity at times, but I feel like that can often be a conduit for play.

In other news - how are you feeling today? Did you do anything nice for yourself this weekend? ✨

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @NightFury - I was making a bit of a joke about talking in front of people.

Yes adults is a harder audience.

I used to be so unbelievebly shy when I was a kid, but somehow I have learnt how to put the mask on and just do it.

My goodness, you got tonnes of stuff done yesterday, that's an incredible amount of work and also mixed, a bit of sitting and using brain, a bit of physical and a bit of social.

I hope you're suitably chuffed at your effort.

I always find physical activity helps me and wood stacking and chopping I find to be a good one.

Yes, it took me ages to ring the first help line. I think I rang and hung up a few times before actually waiting for someone to answer.

So good on you for reaching out.

You probably read on here that the lines aren't good, I haven't rung many times, but I've either had a positive experience or a neutral experience. I did a text based chat once, but I didn't like that because it was obvious the person was doing more than one chat at the time, very slow responses. So in my limited experience I haven't felt as though the person thought my problem was not bad enough or not significant or whatever.

A blog post, is that for your course or something else?

Another big day of business for you again.

Hope you get enough rest to refresh for work.

Re: Not Good Enough

Happy Sunday @AuntGlow and thanks for checking in.

I do the puzzle page pretty much daily, I might miss a day but I still tear out the page and do it the next day or whatever.

I often do them in the evenings anyhow, but sometimes I do them in the day.

Today I had sport followed by a club meeting and then I did some shopping, came home, had a cup of tea and did a crossword!

I have curiosity with factual type things and I often go down rabbit holes, when I come across stuff that sparks my interest and I research a broad range of topics. I am often/usually curious in nature watching birds, insects and animals but also examing plants and trees etc

I used to do quite a bit of photograhy, but I have fallen out of that hobby and I should get back into it.

Saturday I spent making a presentation mainly, got a load of washing dry finally and did some outside things. The roofer came and I hope he has fixed the hole in my roof, which has been very stressful for me. Of couse it has stopped raining so I can't test it, but supposed to rain tomorrow.

How has your weekend been? I'm sure it's been busy today on forums

Re: Not Good Enough

@Till23 I have seen on here that the lines are...a really mixed bag. I think that's makes it harder to actually go through with reaching out to them...

No, I started a blog last year, just on what I learn throughout my week, the things that I experience. Like this week, I wrote about the professional development days I attended on Friday where we learnt about the unwritten codes in our society and how we have to teach children to navigate them.

I hope I get enough rest too. I have a huge headache, have had really broken sleep over the last few days and I'm feeling all the feels. We're just chilling at the moment, watching Mickey Mouse.

Re: Not Good Enough

Any time @Till23

You sound like you're very good with structure and motivating yourself. I have noticed this because I find it challenging haha

Oh, yes - creatures and critters pique my curiosity too - but facts as well, especially about the brain! Do you have a rabbit hole you've been down lately?

I would love to see some photos you have taken! Maybe sharing them will ignite that spark again?

Getting washing finally dry must have felt so good. Has any rain come yet for you to test your roof? 🤔

Yesterday was very busy! I mainly spent the weekend resting and working, thank you for asking. ✨

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @AuntGlow unfortunately macrophotography will produce an image with a huge file size, and there is a limit (which is completely fair) on the size of files you can upload to the forums.

I might try to decrease a file size but it might make image too blurry etc to be able to see what it's of! If I have time, I might try it.

I'm down a rabbit hole every other 15mins I reckon. I might see something on TV, or read something and look it up. I've been down lots of psychology related rabbit holes, nature, just anything that sparks my interest. If I see a film I'm like, who's that actor, where's that filmed, did that really happen like that in real life etc etc

It has just started raining here again and it hasn't been heavy but roof is holding up so far. So fingers crossed.
