Accessing with the hope of connection and understanding

Accessing with the hope of connection and understanding

I have just reengaged with SANE. I never really ‘checked it out’ (nor do I even remember) when I signed up in September. I have a diagnosis of AuDHD that I still question just because I feel I’m not believed and I was 50 (prior to this it was depression; anxiety) and there have been times in my life I kind of ‘had it together’ (job etc). Currently I’m not working and in a low action state; with lots plans/desire to move forward; but uncertainty where to start. I don’t even know if I’m making sense

You sound open and sensible to me. @Miffysmum I tend to take diagnoses with a hefty grain of pink Himalayan salt. Sometimes they help and sometimes they don't. I find dialogue and asking questions healthy. Welcome to the forum

Re: Accessing with the hope of connection and understanding

Hi @Miffysmum, I am also just coming back to the forum after a long time. I'm trying to reconnect with community...

I have also had diagnoses which I don't agree with or am not sure about. In theory, the treatment is more important than the diagnosis and more and more clinicians are willing to try treatments from "other" diagnostic categories, rather than being locked in to one modality based on a label, especially outside of the medication sphere.

In my experience, a clinician having a good understanding of the symptoms and issues that bother me will be more useful than having a specific label. The only time this falls over is when you have to talk to a new professional of course!

In terms of getting started on a new path - I am also in the same position. I have been working with a mental health OT to try and understand why things have "exploded" in the past and get through the anxieties and traumas around that, and figure out what skills and changes I need to pursue a "life worth living". People say to just break things down into little steps or chunks but honestly having a support person makes it a thousand times easier, so I would see if there's any recovery services available to you!

Good luck with everything and I hope you get the supports you need ❤️
