Welcome and getting started

Newly diagnosed with shizophrenia

Newly diagnosed with shizophrenia

I was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia at 38 which is a bit rarer and came as a shock. When I was deep in psychosis at the start it was so scary and confusing and confronting I didn’t know what was going on.
I’m on medication which helps with the hallucinations and delusions but still have some pretty bad negative symptoms I’m trying to get help with.

anyone else out there with some similar experiences? Would love to hear your stories and some of the things you’ve done to help with coping.

Hello @lugo,

Sorry to hear about you diagnosis. It is a shock and hard thing to go through and accept, especially if you have been well for many years and most of your life.

I was diagnosed late too, at the age of 42. I hear voices just about 24/7.

I don't take meds anymore as I now cope fairly well and don't like living on antipsychotics. I've got most of my life back now and try not to focus on the horrifying messages.

There is hope, but it's good to get all available help. I found talking to psychologists and caring friends the most helpful.

I wish you the best of luck with your recovery.

@Bunniekins How did things start for you? I thought for me it started when I would start talking to the voices I’d hear, thinking they were next door. But in retrospect I was experiencing symptoms up to a couple of months earlier. It just kinda crept up and then I had full blown psychosis. Was a scary and confusing time that’s for sure. I haven’t had any relapses since the first major incident and I hope I can keep it that way.

@lugo just a lil tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them - use the @ symbol and a drop down will appear, and you can choose their name. If their name isn't there, you can type it out and it should then appear for you to select, then it will show up in blue, like this: @Bunniekins

@lugo hi lugo i was going through a traumatic time at home with middle son who has autism and interestly was diagnosed with schizophrenia. i thought i could lip read .... i could hear voices female screaming at me in my kitchen, i thought the house was bugged. i had no idea something was terribly wrong i just went totally insane and was alone except for my mother. i still hear things and had a visual "one" recently.

@Circlegame1 i am so sorry that you went through trauma. my family went through trauma with middle son it tipped me over the edge into a full blown psychosis it still has marked my family. there are parts of my time with psychosis that i cannot remember let alone talk about. xx

Re: Newly diagnosed with shizophrenia

@Bunniekins I remember everything vividly. The amount of dots you connect in the paranoia is wild. Everything had a meaning or some subtle significance. Hard to explain… I wrote down everything I was experiencing. Pages and pages. Haven’t read them since writing them but kinda helped make sense of things later.

Re: Newly diagnosed with shizophrenia

Hi @Bunniekins because I am a medium the psychosis connected me on a higher level meaning it could connect with me physically being injured on many occasions when there was nothing there it has changed my belief in so many ways although it was traumatic I wouldn’t change a bit of it

Re: Newly diagnosed with shizophrenia

@lugo wow i wish i could or maybe not some things are not good which is why i think my mind is blocking them out. i used to wake up during the night and there would be 3 dark haired men at the end of my bed telling me to do awful things like curl up like a snake so i would curl up on my bed. i think they were demons to this day.
