Just feeling very alone right now

Just feeling very alone right now

Hi,

I am super struggling right now. It’s ok, I know it is just a wave and I know it will pass, but it HURTS. I feel super alone and super hopeless. I had my fifth session with my new psychologist yesterday and we are still struggling to figure out the boundary stuff. Specifically, we can’t figure out what the heck I’m supposed to do when I get a giant wave of suicidal ideation. My psychologist says she isn’t available to be someone for me to call in a crisis…and I don’t have anyone else. We have talked about how the crisis lines (lifeline and the suicide callback service) usually hang up on me and on the occasions that they don’t hang up on me they usually say dumb-arse stuff that escalates the situation. We have also talked about how a lot of my trauma issues are related to my experiences in the public mental health system. Yesterday in our session, my psychologist simply mentioned “go to the hospital” and I dropped to the floor, crawled under her desk and started doing the whole headbanging and making weird noises thing that I do when I get super flooded with giant feelings. This was towards the end of the session and I couldn’t get properly emotionally regulated before it was time for her to boot me out of her office. Thus I left my psychologist’s office feeling about a thousand times worse than when I went in. And now I feel alone, abandoned and afraid as I look down the barrel of an entire week without anyone to talk through the giant feelings with.

I asked my psychologist what her other suicidal clients do when they are in crisis, and she said they generally have friends and family that they know they can call, and then as a last resort they will go to the hospital (that was when I got triggered). So…given I don’t have “friends and family,” I feel like I’m totally screwed. I’m feeling hopeless because I don’t have that support, but I’m also feeling muddled because in my past failed attempts at friendship, when I’ve tried to ask friends for help the response has been that this stuff wasn’t friend stuff and I really needed professional support. So what I’m hearing is that the professionals palm it off to friends and family, the friends and family pass it back to the professionals, and the client sits in the middle desperately asking for help and being ignored from every angle.

I feel utterly hopeless. I really like my new psychologist. After my hideous twelve months of therapist shopping and my eight failed attempts, I know she is the right match. I super like the fact that she is open to SOME between session contact – I am amazed at how many therapists refuse any! Our rules are that I can send her one email a week, which can be as long as I want and she will acknowledge it, and I can send two voice messages, which can be a maximum of three minutes each. This works well for me in terms of generally feeling connected and not abandoned all week. However, my psychologist was saying yesterday that I can’t use these communication methods to reach out to her if I am in extreme crisis. She said that right now she doesn’t know the answer to this problem and she acknowledged that it definitely is a big problem. She said she will think about it over the coming week. I do super like her, I’m just feeling hopeless about whether one can really do intensive trauma-related work without support beyond the 50 minute therapy session. I actually felt pretty good going into the session yesterday and it just doesn’t seem right that I came out feeling so awful…and that as a result of what transpired in the session I’m sitting here at 5am working hard not to SH.

Well thanks for listening. Sorry it got kind-of long. I'm really glad I discovered the forums .

Hi @Phoenix_Rising ...... 😊💕

I have seen you around the forums lately, but haven't chatted one to one .....

I'm travelling overseas, so I'm in a different time zone, which is why my avatar so all over the place at the moment while everyone else is quiet .....

I'm here, and I'm listening .....

Maybe distracting yourself a bit from your current thoughts and feelings will help a little.

Have you gone into the Look After Ourselves discussion topic ? And Enjoying Time With Others ? There are some social threads there, and inspirational quotes that often come with beautiful images.

365 Project has some interesting bits and pieces.

There's Coping Box too ....

Feel Good Moments has some funny videos on it.

You might not be feeling sparky or up to chat, but you can browse and tap into whatever interests you.

That's actually the value of family and friends as much as anything else - distraction, keeping yourself out of the negative-thoughts head space. Here you are part of a forum family and can develop friendships with people who won't judge you.

I'll be around for a couple more hours if you want to chat some more .....

Hi @Faith-and-Hope

Thanks for the reply. It really helps just to feel "heard." Sigh...I deeply appreciate you responding to me, but your reply also reminded me that I've already heard it all before. It's all about distracting, coping, etc. I'm tired of all of that. I know what I need but I just can't get it. I need genuine human connections. I know you referred to the idea of the forum being a family, but that isn't my idea of family at all. It seems to me there is a trend in society to label casual aquaintances as family (and friends). This makes no sense to me. I've had four restraining orders taken out against me by people who told me I could be in their family...and then freaked out that I was intruding on their family!!! Then these situations have been pathologised as me being "fixated" on the person In my failed attempts at friendship, a recurring message has been that I take up too much time and that the person needs to spend time with their family. The message is that family comes first, and I can only ever expect to get the leftover bits of someone's time, care etc after they have tended to the needs of their family. So again, even though I hear the message bandied around that you can "make" a family through friendship, my experience is that no, there is something qualitatively different about individuals being bound together by blood or legal bonds, and if you've lucked out in that area, than you're screwed.

I'm sorry, I know I'm sounding super negative. I don't need to pretend that the situation is other than it is, I just need to sit with the big feelings around it. I find sitting with the big feelings much more helpful than trying to pretend the situation is other than what it is. Thank you for sitting with me

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

Hi @Phoenix_Rising,

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so alone. I know it's very hard when you have a mental illness and you don't have any support at home. The same thing happened to me, about 10 years ago.

I had a complete breakdown and I had no-where to turn, except to the professionals.... It's difficult because these people can not be there for you on call when you need them. They have their own lives and they also have plenty of other clients to look after.

Do you see a psychiatrist as well?

My memories of this time in my life, suffering from major depression and severe anxiety are of intense lonliness and shame. I did have family and friends, but they were all busy with their own stuff and didn't understannd what I was going through anyway; I think I looked normal enough on the surface.

The only thing I can say is that while friends are well-menaing- suggesting that you get professional support is a healthy suggestion- most of them really are not that helpful, due to lack of experience and lack of understanding regarding mental illness.

I have these memories of being dragged by friends through shopping centers and out to lunch in an attempt to 'cheer me up', all the while I was in panic mode, heart racing, trembling and feeling sick. Too much noise and light and being around crowds of people made me feel worse!!

My psychiatrist was axctually really good and medication helped me a lot. When I was really, really bad, the only thing that made me feel better was the pills.

After that, I just tried to do small things to try and experience glimpses of happiness.... watching my favorite movie on D.V.D or listening to my favorite music. I was alone most of the time.

You're welcome @Phoenix_Rising.

I wasn't being flippant in referring to the forum relationships as friendships and family though .... you have made it clear that that is not how you view them, and I can't / won't argue with that perspective.

There are people on the forum here who have come to know each other across a few years of chatting almost daily. I have lived in some very isolated areas, and genuine friendships can form via pen-pal writing, which has, for the most part, been replaced with emailing. I keep in touch with my family members that way as they are now quite dispersed. Again, I hear you that that is not what you need .... and I appreciate your honesty in expressing it openly and directly.

I am glad you have found a therapist you are feeling comfortable with, and I hope you can resolve the crisis contact issue.

Still sitting with you .... 😊

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

Hi again @Phoenix_Rising,

I was just reading what you've written to @Faith-and-Hope above. I agree with you that it's very hard to form a type of 'family' through friendship.

For the most part, friends love to see you when you are happy and care-free and able to bring something to the table... but when you are down and out (and mentally ill) they are mainly at a loss as to what to do with you.

That's really terrible that former friends have taken out restraining orders against you. I suppose that mental illness has such bad stigma attached to it... that they really did feel fearful?? Maybe?? I'm so sorry this happened to you, @Phoenix_Rising. I can imagine that in another life-time the same kind of thing could have possibly happened to me, too. I realized just through reading between the lines and reading body language that some of my so-called friends did not want me around while I was severely depressed and I honoured their feelings. After all, people are just people... they don't have super-human qualities and they can't solve out problems for us.

I probably sound defeatist when I talk about other people, especially friends. It's just that I grew up with the feeling that I could never, ever trust anyone and this feeling has stuck with me. So I don't have high expectations of what other people can do for me, anyway. I'm a bit of a loner.

My story does have a happy ending though... I ended up recovering from depression and going on to meet a wonderful man and get married! Now, I am virtually never lonely! I am still very independent and a bit of a loner, though. I like my 'me' time.

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

Hi @Sahara,

Thank you for replying to my post. No, I don't have a psychiatrist. I have no use for one as my issues are not particularly amenable to medication. I am however very excited to have finally found an awesome GP about 12 months ago. I've just come back from seeing her actually and I am thus feeling a bit brighter than I was this morning. She really gets that I don't find the medical model to be a particularly useful framework within which to conceptualise my issues and she is fine with me just going to see her to talk. I super like this, but I am finding it hard to adjust to because it is such a novel experience for me to have a GP who shows any interest in my mental health issues. Thus my brain keeps telling me "there's no-one" like it was this morning...and I have to work hard to remember that I actually do have someone other than my psychologist who I feel safe with and who I can go and see.

I was in a very complex relationship with a previous psychologist for sixteen years and I know that all of that muddle feeds into why I now struggle so much trying to get my head around what a typical therapeutic relationship looks like. Someone pointed out to me that when I first started seeing X 16 years ago, I didn't have much of a clue about boundaries and interpersonal relationships, and now after all that transpired with X, my brain is so scrambled in this regard I don't know which way is up. I think that is probably a pretty good description of where I'm at . I know that this is partly why some of my attempts to connect with a therapist failed last year. It was like they got overwhelmed by the bigness of the muddle around X and they struggled to navigate the issues around it in order to build a therapeutic relationship. Thus, even though it is REALLY difficult at the moment, I am grateful that my current psychologist sees the complexity and is working hard to come up with strategies to make this excruciatingly difficult transition as smooth as possible.

It is super cool that you recovered from depression. It sounds like you were able to really find what worked for you. That's awesome! It's always good to hear a story with a happy ending.

I found it really interesting that you talked about being able to pick up when your friends didn't want you around, via body language and reading between the lines. You see, as well as my mental health issues, I have Asperger's syndrome, and I think you really identified one of the reasons why I seem to get into such a pickle in interpersonal relationships. I have zero idea how to "read between the lines." I'm a pretty simple minded little bunny - I say what I mean and I mean what I say...and it bewilds me that others don't do likewise. For example, one rule I have learnt after oh-so-many dramas is that when people say "you can call me anytime," they don't mean it. I had several experiences of people saying that and then getting angry when I called them at 2am. So now, even though the whole thing seems stupid to me, I just know it is a rule that when someone says I can call them any time, I smile and nod and know they don't mean it - no matter how sincere they sound.

Anyway, thanks again for replying - I super appreciate it

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

Hi @Faith-and-Hope,

Thanks for sitting with me . Yeah, I used to be heavily involved in one of the forums at uni and I THOUGHT they were real friends. But nope, it turned out they were just aquaintances. Don't get me wrong, I think aquaintances are super important, but to me there is a big difference between an aquaintance and a friend. However, I accept that others have different definitions of these terms.

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

Hi @Phoenix_Rising

There were quite a few things in your opening post that resonated deeply for me, including your style of comfort and SH when triggered.

I really like the detail & clarity that you wrote distinguishing between friends, family & therapuetic relationships.

I am probably a bit aspergerish. I have been working hard at teaching myself to read body language cues later in life ...

I got the "call any time" social lie .. because it was given to me too nicely and smoothly by the type of person who did not seem to have known much discomfort .. I never tested it.

I was also surrounded by a lot of boundaries set by others .. I knew that calling at 6 was also a bad time so that meant calling only between 7-8.30pm ..

I also have had a long association with therapy .. was taught to get down on the floor in primal therapy ... but not had as long a time with one person. Mostly I would stop going because of lack of money , lack of transport, lack of time, ... I tried to manage on minimal sessions and not take from the household budget etc ..

When I first joined the forums I was trying to learn more about boundaries. In some ways I had none .. but also now .. I realise I had too many of other people's boundaries and requirements put upon me whilst growing up and so was very muzzled. When I finally had a regular psychiatrist to see in late 20s, I worshipped him. I bumped into him once at a bookshop .. to his embarrassment and so was scrupulous about NEVER calling him between sessions despite frequent SI .. as he was an IMPORTANT man. So was very hurt when I realised his disdain and opinion of me, when I wrote years later , politely asking for clarity about a few things that had occurred during his time as "my doctor". When seeing psychologists I managed my SI on my own.

it is great that you have negotiated a clear arrangement with your new psych. I have found the forums helpful in letting me know the degree of help that other people manage to find.

Some of our issues are very similar and some are a bit opposite, but I hope just sharing .. as it it is .. helps break down some of your loneliness. I prefer not to be too much an advice giver ... and only a b it of an encourager .. I just hope that honest sharing works.

For me, I have not had any conversations with somebody who had banged their head like I did. So thanks for being open and truthful, it gives us something in common.

Once spontaneously I sat on the floor with my current psych and she said she felt uncomfortable, that was just me being an on the floor type .. I was showing her photos from my album and it was easiest way to sit in the room and do it.

My sense of compliance is strongly ingrained. I read in my state ward file, that it was striking and would cause me problems when I grew up. I am also getting older and less bothered by shyness and embarrassment ..but still compliant .. even when the psych was making a lot of noises .. as if we were peers and I was not just a patient.

Hope you get some sense of company on the forum. Yes you are right about it not being ideal, but for many it is better than they were getting irl and it is a way of talking that acknowledges the contributions of others .. to call the feelings that grow .. as family-like .. but yes it is metaphorical not literal ..

Cheer .. your profile name has been a big ... mantra for me .. helps me keep going even when I feel dead ..

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

My sister has always banged her head with what comes across as a release do extreme frustration when she wants a particular outcome to conversations or situations and others don't agree with her. She started that at a young age and the behaviour has remained as a part of her personal expression. She does it in that moment, but doesn't continue with it beyond the moment. We have just accepted it as a behaviour akin to swearing,, or punching something, or throwing something ....

Re: Just feeling very alone right now

@Phoenix_Rising,

I'm glad you told me about the Asperger's syndrome.... it's very interesting and I'm glad to have your perspective on things. I never thought about it that way before; when someone says to you "call any time" - no, they don't mean literally "any time" For someone like me... it's just a given that they don't mean it literally.

I would only call a friend between the hours of 9 am and 8 pm.... and 11 am and 8 pm on weekends. If there were a real emergency, then I would call 000. Likewise, if a friend were to call me after midnight, then I just wouldn't answer the phone! My phone is usually in the bottom of my handbag in the lounge-room and I wouldn't hear it ring, anyway.

Also, I wouldn't go around to someone's house without texting them first. Sometimes, I won't even call them until I've sent a text asking if it's a good time to call! I am probably a bit too cautious, sometimes.

I have always felt that I do all the chasing in friendships... but it's probably because I have a lot of time on my hands. since I met my husband, I don't ring up my friends anywhere near as often as I used to.
