Depression Loneliness Isolation

Depression Loneliness Isolation

Content/trigger warning
I live in a retirement village in a regional area in coastal NSW and there are people everywhere.
But depression and anxiety has hit me hard for various reasons. I have no family anywhere.
I belong to a coffee group and a craft group, but haven’t been to the groups recently because in various ways my depression and anxiety has made it so difficult.
I have asked for support in various ways and I’m not getting it.
It seems nobody wants to know and get involved, nobody cares - as we know here depression and anxiety is not a contagious disease but that’s how it seems.
I don’t know what I am doing to deserve being ignored like this.
Can anybody help please ?

@MJG017

Thank you M and a big virtual hug back to you 🤗. Thank you, yet again, for your kind thoughts.

I’ve been out to my favourite local cafe this afternoon and had a coffee. It’s hot here today and I then went down to the river and found a spot to sit in the shade, but forgot to take my water bottle, so trying to walk in the heat when I don’t feel strong (physically or mentally) without it was not a good idea. I had my own fold up chair, so much more comfortable than a park bench, which is really hard to sit on because my backside has got so boney. I’m home again now, and will try to walk around where I live later, when it is cooler.

I wish Sane could work out a way for people on both sides of the fence, people like you and I, to could communicate by phone, by mutual agreement. One can only dream. Surely there must be a way for it to be possible, but still maintain the control, privacy and security of both parties. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be the only person thinking like this. This so that if one side or the other abused that privilege it could be cut off. I can only speak for myself, but I would NEVER abuse the privilege.

Re: Depression Loneliness Isolation

Hi @Lula

I guess most people wouldn't abuse a rule like that, but it is open to it and it's just a lot less complicated and safer for the forum to do a blanket ban. Like I said, it is frustrating though. Although i'm sure some people would have worked around it in the past.

Going down to the river sounded like a really nice bit of fresh air, plus it's always nice to just get out of the house for a bit. The comfy chair was a good idea, you may as well be comfortable. Those park benches aren't always the most comfy places to sit, even for people like me who's backside could not be described as boney. Forgetting the water bottle was unfortunate but well done for making the effort to go out and i'm sure you wont forget the bottle again if it's warm outside. It saves you having to buy one from the Cafe. I don't like it when they have music playing either, so i definitely would have joined you outside.

Meeting this volunteer sounds like a very positive bit of news. See how it goes and hopefully you can spend some more time with her and even become friends. I'm sure i've told you, but i could be wrong. But I previously worked in the local community centres for almost 20 years. A lot of the people who volunteer in them do it because they want a bit more social connection as well. So I can well believe it when she says it's help her as much as it's helping you. It's very common to recommend volunteering in a local community centre for people who feel a bit isolated at home or even just bored. So finger crossed, it continues to go well for the both of you. It would be a good little win/win situation.

I've asked the same question about a reply automatically adding a tag of the person you are replying to. That was always the main reason anyone used a 'reply' function, for that convenience. So i have no answer for you on that other than I wish it did as well. I don't so much forget, but it is annoying having to type it in manually all the time.

The other question about your response getting rejected, i would assume comes down to their automatic message filtering. It looks for certain words that people may find triggering. It will come up with an error message telling you what word was rejected and to change it and try posting again. I know one the gets me a lot is the word f#rced. (with an o). Quite often i write things like "so and so happened to me and it f$rced me to try and be better....". I will get the message and I have to edit it like i have here or change it to "made me". So it's just an automatic system that looks for certain words and asks you to change them before posting reduce the chance of anyone reading it and being triggered. So by deleting the letter 'a' you changed the word enough to have it pass the filter.

At least it sounds like you've had a bit more of a positive day Lula. I hope so because I know you've been really struggling recently, and I really hope things are starting to look up for you.

@MJG017

why does life have to be SO complicated M ? Even places like this ?
I thought of scenarios (after I posted) where I could imagine that rule being abused so I do understand.

Yes, the fresh air by the river was nice, although it was very warm fresh air, even in the shade, and I wish you could have been there with me. Your coffee would have been my shout. As for forgetting the water bottle … I’ve done it before and no doubt will again. It’s mostly because I’m stressed.

Yes, you have told me before about your community centre work, so good on you for doing it then, and still doing it now. Your support for me, and of course other people here, really does mean a huge lot. THANK YOU.

About a reply automatically adding a tag of the person you are replying to etc - in our dreams apparently M. It seems only logical to me.

No I haven’t really had a positive day M. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. Thanks again. Lula xx

@Lula

Every forum i've used does the automatic tagging when you reply so yes, it is frustrating it doesn't here.

I will keep some fingers crossed for you as well and hopefully tomorrow will be a more positive day.

You're welcome with the support. I'm happy to do it. I know how hard it is being alone so I like to help where I can, and I've met some very nice people doing it, so it's win/win.

OMG 😁 😁 😁 I am SO HAPPY to be replying to you M ! Phew !!! I have had IT problems - my iPhone and my iPad were not syncing the calendars and that was getting me into all sorts of strife and stress.

I couldn’t work it all out myself, so I asked for help on a local Facebook page. One of the suggestions from several people was to contact a particular IT guy who lives here, which I did do. In the meantime a suggestion somewhere was that I change the Gmail password for the gmail address I use for this Forum. I did that and it only made the situation worse 😫.

But there is good out there in this local world after all (I do seriously wonder about that sometimes). The said IT guy has been and gone and all seems to be sorted now - he was worth every cent - and the pressure it’s taken off me is HUGE.

Before he came I couldn’t access this forum and I was panicking thinking I’d have to open a new SANE account and loose every message you and I have sent to each other. I was feeling sick worrying about that in the small hours when I couldn’t sleep last night.

Earlier today I met up with a person I know a lot better now than I did yesterday. Someone recently suggested to me that I might be on one of the spectrums - I don’t know which one. It made me laugh at the time, but after talking with my coffee friend today it seems she may be right. If it is the case it could perhaps explain the problems I’ve been having with the medications I’ve been on. I have an appointment with my GP next week, so I’ll discuss it with him.

I’ll let you know what happens when I can.

I’m going to make myself a G & T now to celebrate the win so far.

I hope the week ahead is looking good for you M. Bye for now, big virtual hugs 🤗🤗🤗 to you M

@Lula I’m so sorry to hear about your IT problems, but so glad you’ve got it all sorted and you’re back!

It sounds like you’re in a better place that when you first posted

I’m really happy for you that you’ve been able to make a deeper connection with your coffee friend and also that you’ve got a GP appointment

I hope you enjoy your G&T

I’m a senior too Till, and as well as IT, which seems to change daily, I’m finding this world we live in now really quite difficult for all the obvious reasons. But I’ve not be scammed and am pretty wide awake to what I need to be, I live in a coastal, semi rural area, and am very glad to NOT live in one of the big cities. The traffic here is crazy, but I can’t imagine what living in Sydney or Melbourne, for a variety of reasons, must be like now. I haven’t been to either for quite a while, and I’m in no hurry to go back. Look after you Till xx

Re: Depression Loneliness Isolation

Hi @Lula

I'm so glad you got everything sorted. Us IT guys are awesome! 😉 It sure must be a lot of stress gone, especially with not being able to log on here. I know that has stressed you a lot in the past, so it's fantastic you've got that solved.

I've had people tell me i may be on some spectrum as well. I don't know. I know I have some traits that would say yes, but I have others that say no. Part of me wonders about getting assessed, more out of curiosity that anything. But I guess if it was true, i'd like to know. Definitely worth talking tho your GP about it especially trying to avoid any issues with medications in the future.

I hope you enjoyed you win-celebrating G&T. I asked you on Saturday if you had a bit more of a positive day as I thought you sounded more positive that you had been recently and you said no, not really. I'm going to have another crack at it and ask if today you've felt more positive. Big virtual hugs for you anyway 🤗🤗🤗 and well done for getting it all sorted out.

Take care Lula.
