My story

TW : contains mention of suicide

This is an abbreviated version of my life

I was born into a household where nothing was ‘normal’. An only child who shared same unpainted bedroom as her parents until late primary school. (Recently realised) a child of intergenerational abuse.

a child who got her own unpainted bedroom from start of high school that had no floor coverings, a room she ‘shared’ with empty cupboards from when the room was a kitchen. An 11yo who had no idea what it meant to become a teenage girl. A teenager who believed talking about all the physical changes was taboo due to a father who would say ‘that’s woman’s things, nothing to do with me and not to be talked about when I’m home’ ….. a mother who talked about bare minimum only. This level of discussing any female health related item never changed between my mum and I.

a child from 6 or 7 yo who grew to dislike her paternal grandfather due to trying to always and only do what he wanted. 9yo my dads only sibling took his own life. 12 yo my mums youngest sister died as side effect of MS. 13yo my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother died. Only death that had no impact on my MH was my paternal grandfather.

by time I was 14yo my fathers moods were becoming nasty. (Wasn’t until approx 6 years later medical evidence showed brain damage due to strokes). During following 2 years my father destroyed items of my school work, items of school uniform (he used to say was waste of time and money sending me to school, a girls place was at home and that I would never get a job.) I had golf balls thrown directly at my head, car driven directly at me and stopped only just before hitting me. I lived through mental abuse due to my father threatening to get rid of my pets if I didn’t ‘behave’ … this including crying when told not to. Approx 2 years of fully being controlled by my father. (I’m almost 62yo and still can’t cry anywhere unless am at home on my own). 14 yo child who more than once heard her mother saying she wished she was dead and talking about ending her own life.

16.5yo, will help of Police, my mum and I escaped my childhood house and were moved twice within few months due to concerns for our safety with mail sent to local Police Station.

mid 40’s, 23 December and my mum took heart attack in my arms at front door of my home and became unconscious. Next time I saw her she was lying on hospital bed in emergency department….. she had died from another heart attack. Early the following year I made full plans to end lives of my pets and me. It was not just my mum I missed, decades of being controlled had stopped. Both of these leaving me feeling totally lost. Went to local gp following day instead.

time forward approx 10years. Mid 50’s, happily married for 4.5 years and my husband diagnosed with terminal cancer. During next 4 mths he had couple near death close calls, the first being start on January. 6mths after diagnosis he took his last breath. Few months before his death his sister was verbally abusive. After his death this abuse escalated and included threats to get me sacked from my job.

TW: conversions with people already dead

By time I was born only 2 of my grandparents were alive, my maternal grandmother and my paternal grandfather.

from a very early age, until her death when I was almost 13yo I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother and her youngest daughter. Due to having MS, her youngest daughter always lived with her mum.

Mid primary school for me and my aunt was bedridden with her bed in the lounge room. As a child this didn’t feel weird and neither did different things I heard or saw.

Sitting beside her bed talking one day we were laughing then she stopped, looked toward the foot of her bed and said, “No dad, I’m not ready yet, she needs me ….. I’m talking to your grand daughter, will talk to you later”. She turned her head back toward me, apologised and continued talking. My grandfather had been dead for 30+ years.

(tears flowing as type this, I still miss her sooooo much)

12yo and my aunt died. I didn’t cope. I already had abandonment fears. One night not long after she died my parents heard me talking and came to my room to see what was happening. I was found sitting in bed, asleep and talking. Mum went to sit on my bed to which I told her my Aunt was sitting there. For weeks the night chats happened. The final night we spoke I told her I knew I had to let her go to get rest and I won’t cry out to her anymore.

following year my maternal grandmother died. Sat up in bed talking with her for few nights before saying I knew she had to go to be with her husband and daughter

Since moving, at random times, I smell a pleasant fragrance that does not match anything I have in the house

Re: My story

Controlled by parent/s

prior to starting school and my entire primary school days my mother decided what clothing I was to wear each day. Pretty, frilly dresses to go to parties or special events. Shorts or cotton dresses in warm/hot weather. Trousers or overalls in cold weather.

one day in grade 6 I said I wanted to wear a specific set of clothes to school the following day. This one statement resulted in argument between my parents and both yelling at me. Clothing was brought out of my mothers wardrobe, atmosphere in the air I never asked again that year.

High school meant uniforms, my own room and wardrobe …. I thought things would be different. I thought wrong.
Only time I wasn’t told what to wear was school days when uniform was compulsory.
I was no longer allowed to wear shorts, jeans or similar. Regardless of the weather only clothing I had to wear was dresses, majority being pinafores. I used to hate casual dress days and walkathons, they only kid who turned up in a dress of some sort.

in my early 20’s I started my first full time job. Was only my mother and I living together by then. Location of my first job (I didn’t have drivers license at that time) meant spending approx 1hr on public transport. Each and any time I arrived home late there was an argument.

guy who I knew through church invited me to movies once. Due to my mother asking him questions about where we were going, time I’d be home etc we never went out again. Go out with girl friends it was the same thing.

I had survived years of abuse by my father to becoming verbally abused by my mother. Emotionally torn …. Do I leave and go somewhere where I would have no one and nothing or stay in a house that gave me a level of safety and company. Due to abandonment fears that started when I was approx 11yo, it took many years before I broke free and got my own house.

a house of my own in my name only …. Wrong.

a house, I found out when selling it after the death of my mother, that I co-owned with my mother. I never realised when signing all the purchase paperwork that there was a second signature on all the paperwork.

In my mid 40’s I moved from a Melbourne suburb to an entire different town and bought a unit ….. my own unit with only a cat to ‘answer to’

@Former-Member!! Been a while my friend.

Thanks for sharing your story with us! Really powerful, and empowering too - so glad you have your own space now!

How are you feeling after writing/sharing?

Re: My story

@Former-Member I was controlled by my parents especially my mother in many ways. For many years. I guess I internalised the control too.

Mostly I had no choice of clothes... one uniform set and one weekend set, perhaps a dress for church. A pair of school shoes and a pair of plastic sandals. I guess there was no money. At 15 my underwear was ragged and full of holes.

I heard of reactive attachment disorder the other day. Maybe I have it.

Mentally exhausted

kinda guilty for choosing to share things was told by my father to tell no one.

doors that have been locked for decades have opened leaving me drowning in forgotten memories

Re: My story

@Former-Member oh wow, I truly admire the courage it would have taken to push past that. Totally legit to have some guilt lingering, tho I hope you can remember that you deserve the space to express yourself and be heard. Holding those things inside would have been sooooo heavy for so long. What's shareable is bearable, in my experience. Very proud of you 💜

I find that those moments for me, where stuff has come rushing back, has been part of a shift/bigger step forward in my recovery. I think our brains sometimes hold onto stuff until we're ready to process it, so hopefully this is a similarly empowering point for you 🤞

Re: My story

@Dimity Being some very painful memories to try to deal with.

children of one of my mothers siblings were given 2 sets of clothes each Sunday evening. 1 set to be worn to school each day that week, other set to be worn at home each day that week. This including underwear.

Re: My story

thank you for sharing @Former-Member it's honestly amazing how we connect with people after death. whether it be having those conversations, smelling that scent - sounds like some beautiful reminders that our loved ones are watching out for us.

i'm sorry to hear about your parents being controlling about what you wore. i had a similar experience in primary school. i remember begging my parents to let me wear a different outfit for my birthday... but eventually they won. now i do not take my freedom for choosing what i want to wear for granted. it's nice knowing i'm not alone.

@rav3n @Jynx @Dimity

So much confusing memories in my head.

remembering how my life up to my mid 40’s actually was.

remembering how my mother telling me how special and wanted I was.
after 2 miscarriages and my mother being told due to medical issues she would never have children

my mothers words about her never being a grandmother

realising only times I remember my mother telling me she loved me was within last week of her life

it hurts. It hurts so much
