My story

TW : contains mention of suicide

This is an abbreviated version of my life

I was born into a household where nothing was ‘normal’. An only child who shared same unpainted bedroom as her parents until late primary school. (Recently realised) a child of intergenerational abuse.

a child who got her own unpainted bedroom from start of high school that had no floor coverings, a room she ‘shared’ with empty cupboards from when the room was a kitchen. An 11yo who had no idea what it meant to become a teenage girl. A teenager who believed talking about all the physical changes was taboo due to a father who would say ‘that’s woman’s things, nothing to do with me and not to be talked about when I’m home’ ….. a mother who talked about bare minimum only. This level of discussing any female health related item never changed between my mum and I.

a child from 6 or 7 yo who grew to dislike her paternal grandfather due to trying to always and only do what he wanted. 9yo my dads only sibling took his own life. 12 yo my mums youngest sister died as side effect of MS. 13yo my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother died. Only death that had no impact on my MH was my paternal grandfather.

by time I was 14yo my fathers moods were becoming nasty. (Wasn’t until approx 6 years later medical evidence showed brain damage due to strokes). During following 2 years my father destroyed items of my school work, items of school uniform (he used to say was waste of time and money sending me to school, a girls place was at home and that I would never get a job.) I had golf balls thrown directly at my head, car driven directly at me and stopped only just before hitting me. I lived through mental abuse due to my father threatening to get rid of my pets if I didn’t ‘behave’ … this including crying when told not to. Approx 2 years of fully being controlled by my father. (I’m almost 62yo and still can’t cry anywhere unless am at home on my own). 14 yo child who more than once heard her mother saying she wished she was dead and talking about ending her own life.

16.5yo, will help of Police, my mum and I escaped my childhood house and were moved twice within few months due to concerns for our safety with mail sent to local Police Station.

mid 40’s, 23 December and my mum took heart attack in my arms at front door of my home and became unconscious. Next time I saw her she was lying on hospital bed in emergency department….. she had died from another heart attack. Early the following year I made full plans to end lives of my pets and me. It was not just my mum I missed, decades of being controlled had stopped. Both of these leaving me feeling totally lost. Went to local gp following day instead.

time forward approx 10years. Mid 50’s, happily married for 4.5 years and my husband diagnosed with terminal cancer. During next 4 mths he had couple near death close calls, the first being start on January. 6mths after diagnosis he took his last breath. Few months before his death his sister was verbally abusive. After his death this abuse escalated and included threats to get me sacked from my job.

Re: My story

@Former-Member yes it sounds like time to follow up with the psychiatrist.

I'm sorry you found the lawyer made assumptions and was needlessly judgemental about how you used your late husband's legacy, especially if he made a will. Is it something you need to revisit with her? I just don't want you to feel more pain if it's something you can let slide.

I had lunch today with an older friend. It was good to see her and hear her news, and talk to her about what's happening for me. But I feel unwell and inadequate. Hopefully it will pass.

Re: My story

@Dimity I’ve been debating with myself for few weeks now, looking at things from both sides.

Even though he told the lawyer details of specific items to go to specific people, the wording of the will says items to be distributed at my discretion. regardless what I do now it won’t change anything.

since late last year I have been chatting via email with an older relative. Need to organise time and day to meet in person. She has emailed small number photos of her mum and my grandmother (who were sisters) when they were young children.

you have had lots of things happen within the last month, understandable you are not feeling the best. After having had the same surgery as you, apart from medical appointments, I spent first few weeks resting on the couch

Re: My story

I wouldn't try to second guess yourself over the will @Former-Member . It's done now and you did your best at the time.

I'm glad you have that connection with your older cousin. You don't seem to have many family so cherish those you do have. I have a younger cousin but hesitate to call him. I've lost touch with another.

I've been resting a lot and not getting much done. But the clutter is depressing. My eyesight is misbehaving but I won't rush to the optometrist as it may be due to my current meds.

I hope your garden will be OK in this new heatwave - things are very dry.

Re: My story

@Dimity On my dad’s side I don’t have any first cousins, I have one second cousin who I have little bits of contact with. Nearly all my cousins on my dad’s side are Mount Gambier area. On my mums side I have 21 first cousins, most of which are busy with their own lives. I can count on one hand the number that keep in contact/reply to my messages.

Yesterday I received draft will plus cover letter. Neighbour read part of the cover letter today and said to him it sounds like she is semi hinting I’m doing the wrong things. Words about me having received ‘significant assets’ from my husband estate ….. I have obligation to provide for my 2 stepsons (more than the $xx,xxx in my will).

Based on wording in the cover letter plus to try to ensure she has full info of what my husbands estate consisted of, I have emailed her seeking clarification on couple items plus provide summary of how his estate was distributed. Way she spoke at the appointment she triggered me and I struggled not to go into complete shut down. Even so Im fairly sure, due to something she said, she is under impression my husband had lots of assets.

on a much brighter note - my garden. All the plants that I’ve got out the front are quite hardy plants. I do need to remember to give them a good drink tomorrow, most likely in the evening.

yesterday afternoon I went ‘window shopping’ at Bunnings, worked out the type of terracotta pots I want plus had a general stroll through the plants. Today I sketched up rough plan for the new garden design. Tomorrow will email this, photo of each plant type together with request for approval. Hoping weather is cooler plus request is approved around similar time.

Side effects from medications at times can cause all types of problems, have found this with some of my own meds over the time plus with my husbands meds. At one stage some of the meds he was on due to his cancer were causing hallucinations

im hoping to stay inside and avoid as much heat as possible. I get some things done in the mornings, especially on hot days, then have relaxing afternoon trying not to fall asleep. 😂

Re: My story

@Dimity next time I see the lawyer I’m thinking of saying to her I found parts of the first appointment with her overwhelming and needed some thinking time to me.

My next psychiatrist appointment is on Friday. In last session when I told her what and how something my psychiatrist was quite taken aback and said she would have been speechless

Re: My story

Dealing with the lawyer sounds a bit confronting @Former-Member . It can't be easy trying to do the right thing by your stepchildren and others but it's probably worth the effort so your will doesn't get challenged. I need to rethink my will and do something about powers of attorney etc after my recent health scares. Some of my estranged siblings are quite litigious so I'll need good advice.

So you've been accepted by the psychiatrist! That's wonderful.

Re: My story

Oops, sorry @Dimity …. That should have been psychologist (for every ones benefit, mine included, and save confusion Im going back to saying therapist).

at TAFE plus through work I’ve dealt lot with legislation. I’ve done my own research regarding ‘obligation’ to leave adult stepsons money in my will. I don’t like the idea but within myself Im comfortable where the law stands on the matter. I’ve also had time to do the maths aspect, have reached my own decision to increase the amount both stepsons to be gifted.

It was first time info about gifting money to D and M had been mentioned. I left the appointment feeling I had no option in the matter and was being told what to do. Some of that does tie in with my auto reaction due to childhood things and when dealing with people my brain registers as being in position of power.

I am having new power of attorneys drawn up also. For long time it was easy decision which cousins to have. Recently one who is older than me has had few health issues and scares. Based on this I will be having more than one medical power of attorneys drawn plus more than one financial power of attorney.

It definitely is big decision who to have in each role, made more difficult when there are those concerns with your siblings. My late husbands sister (as I’ve been told by her more than once, she is Not my sister-in-law) is money hungry …. The only person I can think of who might cause issues.

Due to some of the different physical health issues I’ve got I’ve included some new things into this will including things that relate to care of my cats, in case they out live me.

just after sunrise this morning I watered out the front prior to deciding to trim back some of my plants. Bin is full with one large Daisy plant plus the coastal rosemary bush to trim back later in the week. My back was quite sore when I stopped but garden looks much better

Re: My story

Yes I think we can be a bit reactive to authority figures @Former-Member . Good on you for reaching your own decisions.

Sounds like a lot of pruning. I think I saw on another thread you have to ask permission on what to put in your garden. I meant to reply but lost track.

  • Hope you're keeping up with watering.

Re: My story

@Dimity People here can do anything they wish inside the house. Anything outside including screen doors, a request in writing has to be made. Then have to wait for reply to say approved or not.

with some household rubbish in bottom of bin, doesn’t take much to fill small bin when hard trimming chrysanthemum and Daisy plants

Re: My story

I hope your garden plans were approved @Former-Member .

I had someone come yesterday to help with tidying outside. I wanted weeding done but she rearranged the garden supplies in the carport instead. It's expensive but she'll have to come back.

I need some repairs - plumber and locksmith - but I'll have to think about my future here. Whether to do piecemeal repairs or proper renovations. Is my mental health good enough to renovate. With my messy family situation where will I be. Will therapy help. And so on.

Did you enjoy croquet this week? I'm not sure if or when my community social support services will start.
