Welcome and getting started

Anixety

Anixety

Hi . I am very new to this and a little nervous but here goes . I am 58 years old and have been suffering from generalised anixety for many years now. I have let my anxiety rob me of the joys of life with avoidance and excuses and now am finding it harder to find the joy in the hobbies and interests I used to have . I am struggling with the day to day grind of my Anxiety. I find it sucks the pleasure out of life . I have had antidepressant medication prescribed to help with this but i have an allergy to these so i am unable to take them . I do exercise and mindfulness nearly everyday but i am still struggling with anxious days and nights. Is there anyone who has had the same problems with medication that has some answers on what else is available to help . Thanks

Hey @AWB16 ,

Welcome to the forums. Thank you for trusting the community and sharing your story with us.

I'm sorry to hear how hard things have been in terms of your anxiety and how you feel it has robbed you off life.

I'm mindful you mentioned you have anti-depressants. Are these anti-anxiety meds too? I take both anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds. I'm mindful we cannot name medication on the forums here, but I was wondering whether a medication review may help you situation?

Or, can it be linked to hormonal changes?

I'm and certain you are not alone in feeling this way.

From @AWB16

Hi Tyme . Thank you for your response . The medication prescribed is an antidepressant . I wasnt aware there are Anti Anxiety meds as my doctor hasn't offered anything but the Anti depressants. I had a recent genetic test which confirm my allergy to these . I am doing a follow up with my GP this week to have a Testosterone check which may rule out other issues .

Hey @AWB16 ,

Thanks for getting back to us.

I'm no doctor, but just from my own experiences, the anti-depressant is for my depression and the anti-anxiety med is for my anxiety.

However, I have heard some anti-depressants can be for both.

Hence it's best to speak to your doc about it, especially if it's come to the stage where the anxiety is crippling and impacting your life.

All the best with it. Looking forward to hearing how you go with everything.

Besides that, are there things you enjoy doing that can help with the anxiety?

Re: Anixety

Hi @AWB16 and welcome to the forums. I just thought I'd leave a quick post re: medications, as I had a similar issue. Do you know what ingredient in the antidepressant you were allergic to? There may be alternatives you could try. I'm now on a medication that isn't really an antidepressant, but does help longer term with anxiety. I'm not sure we're allowed to post names of medication here, so I've not stated it.

Re: Anixety

Thanks for the feedback. I will talk to my doctor re the meds . I have been so consumed with work over the last 20 odd years I left the things I loved doing go by the wayside but I walk and have just joined a gym

Re: Anixety

Thanks balance31 . I am not sure which ingredient it is but I cannot take any of the SSRI antidepressants.

Hey @balance37 , the post above from @AWB16 was for you 🙂

I hope it all goes well with the meds. Sounds a little complicated.

It's good to hear that getting out and about is something you enjoy. I can see how it can be beneficial for your mind, body and spirit.

Would a bit of routine and scheduling in exercise work for you?

Re: Anixety

Speaking to your GP about medication sounds like a good plan @AWB16

I don't use antidepressants either due to an allergy, but my psychiatrist was able to prescribe something that helps with anxiety and can be used long term (not addictive).
