Burglary

Burglary

My home was burgled by an acquaintance that I thought was a friend, only knew him a short time but told him too much about my life and my collections, he took advantage of my openness and stole many items including my treasured collections of 45 plus years, while I was at work, I could hardly sleep for many days.

Police attended and got two good fingerprints, unfortunately no match in the database, after giving a comprehensive statement police acknowledged that it most likely was him but could do nothing about it.

It happened in 2007 and it still troubles me, I still think about my treasured collection that I kept in excellent condition, which is almost impossible to replace, I often think of an item I had and then have to search my house to see if I still have it or if it was stolen, this has happened many times, and it just brings back the pain, unhappiness and haunts me, it seems never ending, I often think about revenge too but realise that would not be sensible, he is almost half my age and more streetwise.

I have been angry with myself for such a long time for being so trusting and naive, I feel that he made a fool of me and I still hate him so much, at the time I was a single person with no close friends to talk with, I tried talking with workmates, but one told my supervisor and she told me that I should not talk to my workmates about it anymore, which just made me feel even worse.

Anyone been in a similar situation, how did you cope?

Re: Burglary

Yes @O--n , I can sure relate to so many parts of your story.

Actually, this happened only a few years ago.

My house was broken into. It affected me so much that I ended up in hospital. While I was in hospital, they returned and stole my car.

The place was ransacked. I lost a lot, especially my health... my mental health suffered. For nights I could hear someone trying to get in and I'd go into a panic.

Then about a year later, it happened again.

Eventually, I moved house. I still suffer today.

Also, after the saga, I returned to work, and was called into the manager's office and told not to talk to anyone about anything because 'the work needs to continue'.

I was distraught and left the manager's office in distress....

I learnt that the world is cruel.

My next post will be how I managed.

Re: Burglary

It was a hard, emotional road @O--n .

I was upset and angry.

But later, I came to the point where I felt sorry for the thieves... I had to consider that what I lost was very little compared to if I lost my life.

Months and months later, the police contacted me. They found the person. I was not angry. I had no anger left in my heart except sadness for them. The fact that they need to do what they did to feed their addictions. The police told me he went to jail, but the intent of the crime was because of drugs etc....

If I could turn back time, I would. But I can't. I've had to learn the concept of Radical Acceptance - the idea that I have to accept the things I cannot change in order to move on.

The emotions are still there. But I have to work through it.

Sitting with you.

Re: Burglary

I really do appreciate your friendly openness and sharing your story with me, I do believe it helps to know others have gone through the same bad experience, it’s not easy but we are survivors, by not letting those criminals destroy us.

It would seem that you have a generous forgiving heart, that is kind of you and shows the good person that you are, for me to forgive the A+++hole is much harder because I thought he was a friend although I only knew him a short time, he is a guitar teacher and lives just two streets away from me, that’s how I met him going for guitar lessons, he as always very friendly and after each lesson would talk for about half an hour afterwards and I told him too much, meeting him was one of the biggest mistakes in my life he caused me so much stress, unhappiness and sleepless nights.

So many other bad things happened with him after I notified the police, but I don’t want to turn this into a lengthy novel. 😂

Again, I thank you for sharing your story with me, I’ll finish here wishing you a much better New Year in 2025 😉

Re: Burglary

Thanks for taking the time to tell me your story, and sorry to hear that you had to go through that bad experience too.

One positive is that they say what doesn’t ++++ you makes you stronger, so maybe that is true, they also say that everything happens for a reason, to make us change in some way, not sure about that, I think it is more likely just bad luck.

Strange how we have both gone through similar experiences, managers and supervisors telling us not to talk to workmates about the burglary, but now in our work department they are encouraging us to talk with our workmates and to ask if we are Ok.

Maybe we are similar personalities, reserved introverts? as we have gone through the same emotions, mentally and physically, the sleepless nights, anger and for me even self blame, why was I so naive to not see through and blindly trust this A+++hole.

You had the added stress of your home being ransacked, that was different for me, once he had broken into my home he realised that there was so much he wanted to steal from me, he could not take everything at once, so each time he took something he tidied up before he left, so he could come back again to take more each time while I was away at work.

I agree with you that it is a cruel world with some heartless people in it! 😏

Arrrghhh @O--n ,

That's so stressful.

The thing is, I had grills on all my doors and windows, triple locking system on my security doors and everything. But they were so desperate, they literally ripped the doors out of the house.

So even after the break ins, it was extensive work to get the house liveable again. It was so stressful.

But yes, I don't hold anything against the thieves. They're a sad case.

As for work, I learnt never to trust management. I stayed at the work place because I wasn't one to quit, but the story remained... yep - management said "the work needs to go on"....
