Welcome and getting started

Hi all

Hi all

Hi, [edited by moderator] I’m very new to forums and especially to talking about myself.

I’ve had a rough few years including personal business closure, falling out with family and a failed serious relationship.

I’m now in another relationship and potentially becoming a father which has been a long time dream of mine. However my stress and anxiety levels are shutting me off from everybody and I keep feeling like I need to get as far away from everything and everyone as possible. Just wondering if anyone had any tips. I am seeing a therapist but I don’t find it easy to talk about this. I have also started taking anti-depressants, which definitely dulls my emotions but i feel as if it has some benefit to me right now, as previously I was unable to sleep and had a lot of chatter going on in my head.

Thanks.

Hey @P370 and welcome to the forums! I hope you find it to be a warm n welcoming community 😊

Wow, what a huge period of loss, I am really sorry to hear it. I am honestly not surprised that you've been feeling anxiety creeping up, considering how much you've been through lately. This is simply how our internal survival system works - anxiety is merely our brain trying to protect us from potential pain. The loss of a significant relationship, as well as ruptures in your family relationships, is bound to leave anyone feeling concerned about whether this new relationship will go the same way. And even if logically you know it's going well, anxiety doesn't really like to listen to logic. It listens to experience.

Have you thought about getting a bit of professional mental health support to help you process these events and help you manage these anxious feelings? I'd say it's well worth considering. You could check out our Guided Recovery service for some telehealth support if you haven't aready!!

I hope you find what you're looking for in the community 💜

Re: Hi all

Hey @P370 , there certainly is a lot going on for you right now.

I can hear that as exciting as it can be to be a parent, it can also bring a lot of question marks.

I'm sorry to hear you have been feeling pretty low with what's been going on.

I read you have a therapist. Do you have any other supports around you who you can talk to?

Hi @P370

Welcome to the forums 🙂

Congratulations on the exciting new stage in your life! I hear that you've been through a lot, and are now stepping into the next part, taking care of yourself with the meds and counselling. Sometimes, it isn't until life is good and we feel a bit safer, that we can really allow our bodies the space to process everything it survived. Maybe this resonates for you?

It's not easy opening up, and looking at the parts that aren't or didn't work out so well. And the parts that did. They're there too! Sometimes we think of them as failures, but often time shows that it wouldn't have turned out any other way, and the lessons we gained actually set us up for the wonderful successes that are yet to come. It just takes that processing and healing time to sort through it all.

Be proud of your strength, keep building good things, yourself included 🙂

Re: Hi all

Hi @P370, welcome to the group.

I'm sorry about everything you've had to go through in recent years. It certainly sounds like a lot to deal with in so short a time.

I never talked about anything either until very recently, so I completely understand how hard it is to do at first... and can continue to be. I'm just wondering this stress, anxiety, and wanting to retreat that you feel now with this new relationship is new or has been something you've dealt with before. I only ask because my whole life I have severe attachment issues and I feel this way whenever I start to get close to someone. There is just this very strong instinct to distance myself, especially emotionally. I'm only just starting to work on it, but I know now it is basically a flight response due to my lack of trust that people wont reject or hurt me. So I was just wondering if you feel like it is something similar for yourself or that something else is causing it for you. With you mentioning a fallout with family, I know that growing up without that emotional support from family can usually cause a lot of these attachment issues, so if you also grew up like that as well it may be the key to what you are feeling now.
