Anyone started with the NDIS?

Anyone started with the NDIS?

Tells my story from initial application (Feb '17) to acceptance by NDIS (July '18) and the process of putting things in place and progress, improvements, managing and difficulties since then. Now Jan '21.

Original post : I've recently moved and will need to get into the NDIS in my new location. Wondering if anyone in the forums has successfully done this? Any advice would be welcome. Feeling swamped by their website.

EDIT : I was finally accepted to the NDIS and am now 3/4 through my 2nd plan. With only a small reduction from the first year. And this plan is for 2 years so I don't have to jump through all the hoops with a review this time next year. To all others on this path I say ........

IT'S REALLY WORTH PERSEVERING!!!

Hoping this thread helps all who come here.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

What??? Doesn't make sense to me @saturnzoon. If you have a permanent MI, how do they figure out the early interventions? As I would have thought early intervention would be too late - once your diagnosis is permanent. And then how are you meant to get support if these other services are no longer being funded?
Nothing here sounds logical. The NDIS does not seem to know what they are doing. And it sounds too complicated for those who struggle with cognitive issues.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

@saturnzoon Hi saturnzoon and sorry to here about your disappointing letter from NDIS their jargon is so hard to understand ... my son has autism and psychosis (schizophrenia) epilepsy, intellectual disability and they still didnt fully fund his application. Have put in an appeal which I have been told could take over two months. If they knock it back again off to the local member we go as you suggested.

So sorry you are having so much trouble with this whole process. It should not be this hard. Love gp

Sorry appleblossom with your sons disabilities you should have been a good package as he has more than one thing, unfortunately where finding out that they are not consistant with there answers and have found that it depends on the people that are reviewing packages as they are spread between teams and the teams treat cases differently which is not fair, I know some parents from my group have had kids with mild Autism and nothing else and had more than $30,000 for each core and then others that are high and have other complications and have only ended upwith less than $20,000 for there whole package and some recieved nothing, it just makes no sense and even the parties that offer NDIS and have gone to the interviews with them are not the same, the whole system needs to be overhauled and a lot of people get upset. i had my worker print up the review paperwork which you need to do and must ring them to let them know we are reviewing it, but they have made the review a lot harder to apply and you really need someone that knows how the NDIzs works and what there looking for to go this way at least they give us 3 months. If you do get knocked back do try again and get as many support letters as you can addressing the areas they tell you that wi did not qualify for.

I will keep in touch and help as much as i can as to where we can get help, and wish everyone a good outcome. Sorry onecthing i forgot do not expect a quick answer we were told the reviews are put in a to hard basket at the moment and can take up to between 8months and a year.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Hi @saturnzoon I'm very sorry to hear about their decision not to fund you. I was knocked back for the same reasons and did an internal review which was also knocked back. Then I got a Disability Advocate who also got me a solicitor through legal aid. We appealed through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Several new reports and statements later we were due for a hearing on a Thursday morning a few weeks ago. Late in the day on the Tuesday the NDIS conceded and accepted me under section 24. They probably wanted to avoid the tribunal ruling in my favour which would have meant it was a legal precedent others could use. Call me cynical. I have complex PTSD and Bipolar 1. So ........ I'm still waiting to hear from the NDIS to arrange a planning meeting.

You can google Disability Advocates in your state and they are free. Their job is to help you with your appeal. I'm hoping my story can give you hope and strength to persevere in your fight to be accepted.

They are staying on board with me until the planning meeting.

I hope you have some support people around you. I know I couldn't have done it without my sister-in-law and brother helping me.

Ask me any questions you have about it if you think I can help.

@eth. Sounds a lot like what WorkCover did to me. They conceded a few hours before our hearing was due.

I think these Government places tryand make ppeople give up. But when you get lawyers involved - they tend to back down.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

So NDIS rang this morning and wanted to have the planning meeting next week. My support person and disability advocate aren't available til early July so I told them that and they will ring me again then (if they do what they said).

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Hoping to find the impetus to start pre-planning for my plan meeting with NDIS today - don't have a date for it yet but it should be early July. Spoke to my disability advocate yesterday and she thinks a pre-planning meeting with her and sil is a good idea so that should happen at the start of July when sil isn't so busy.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

hello @eth

Pleased to read that you planted your seedlings....I used to be out there every day watching them...willing them to grow...checking for snails..

It probably is a good idea to make some dot points at least...adding some notes at the meeting....

spreading it out gives you more control....

I imagine the worst part is over now that you have approval....red tape stuff now....good luck...

keep up the outcome on here if you feel up to it...knowing that you are helping others at the same time as yourself ..always rewarding..

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Hi @Sophia1 The main thing I need to do (I think) is make a clear list of goals and relate them directly to supports the NDIS can enable. Once I've done it I might post it here, if I have the energy to do so. I want this to be a comprehensive record of the journey I'm having to eventually get to a planning meeting and having a funding plan. And then a whole new journey begins.

I do hope it will be helpful for others wanting to be funded by NDIS.
