Am Not Coping

Am Not Coping

I am really not coping at the moment but this is entirely on ME!

This is a message for a few people on here @utopia @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member

that I asked could be passed on but it seems that only part of it has been and I understand from the responses that have made it through my emails that I have caused untold distress for some people. I was not going to return because of what I felt I put people through but I especially wanted @utopia and @Former-Member to know that they were not wrong at the time and I was going through a real crisis period. You both held me together for longer than I could myself until the point where my own self-destructive thoughts overwhelmed me.

The entire message that I sent to SANE is below:

I have just viewed the multitude of emails and messages sent from forum members and members of the SANE team – as well as the text and voice message left on my phone.

I have not been able to communicate with anyone since the other night as I have been recovering from what ended up being an unsuccessful attempt to end the pain.

At the time I was in a very distressed state and I did want to stop the pain and all I seemed to achieve is to cause others pain and worry and that is the last thing I wanted to do – I just wanted to end mine and say goodbye to everyone beforehand so my future absence was explained. I should have realised that the message I posted would have concerned some people but I really was not in any state to think about the repercussions for others.

I am so sorry I caused so much distress to others – that is something I will have to hopefully try and live with.

I don’t believe after the concern and anxiety I caused to so many that I will ever be able to return to the forum.

Can someone from the SANE team please explain all this to all those involved and pass on my gratitude for their compassion, concerns and kind words throughout the time I have been part of the ‘forum family’.

Thank you and sorry again for the difficult position I put everyone in.

Zoe7

I do not want any responses from any of you. I just wanted to let you know exactly what has happened and let you know how truly sorry I am for hurting people I have come to think of as friends and family, and who I really care about.

Your support, advice and compassion are what make you all the wonderful people you are.

@utopia and @Former-Member I am so sorry that the trust you placed in me has now been broken because of my actions. I also felt that we had a stronger connection, especially over the last week, and you both helped me in ways I cannot even describe or explain. I was not pulling away from you two - just wanted to pull away from myself. I couldn't cope with my own feelings and no-one or nothing was actually going to be able to stop me at the time. It's now just another failure to add to my list of failures. I really don't know what else to say to you both but to reiterate my heartfelt 'sorry'.

Re: Am Not Coping

I am glad to hear you talking it out @Zoe7 ..... you have been triggered by something that occurred here, but the strength of forum family means you have returned here to talk about it and get your feelings sorted as best you can. That's the two sets of rings ..... addressing both, as you say.

I am so sorry to hear you have been suffering. Things tend to strike me progressively too, like an aftershock that I didn't feel in the moment. But it is so important to validate the way you feel ..... that is key I think .... to be able to say "That offended me, and I have the right to be upset and angry" ......

Feelings matter ....but I find it helpful to think of them as an object .... something that takes up space .... has an identity. That way you can begin to choose what to do with a feeling. Do you want to hold onto it ? Do you want to put it down for a while because it's heavy ? Do you you want to break it down into smaller pieces because it is easier to process like that ? Hiding it doesn't make it go away, but if you need to you can Dover it with distractions for a while so you're only dealing with glimpses of it ......

You have choices .... and I hear you owning choices here tonight. Proud of you.

Re: Am Not Coping

@Zoe7 as @Mazarita said... you had no way of knowing where that conversation was going to lead. Perhaps adding to my list of how to protect yourself... how about not to reach out to new contributors who create threads that could need that kind of support? Because the contributor was someone unknown or relatively unknown to you, there was perhaps extra risk of how things might unfold plus we are always vulnerable to that kind of situation. I know myself that if I see a new thread from a poster I have not seen before I become wary and although I want to reach out, I avoid those threads until I become more familiar with who might be on the other end and what might be going on with them.

You might like to think about standing back a bit in those situations too. But that's easier said than done because our natural instinct is to want to help.

Re: Am Not Coping

oh @Former-Member but (random person) @Faith-and-Hope wouldn't do that because she is a legend

...but I do know what you mean. I have left some conversations this week and 'put myself first' a couple of times - and talked with just one or two people instead. I have felt a bit bad about that but knew it was the right thing for me to do.

@Mazarita I do know that I 'allowed' this person to feel comfortable enough to be able to talk openly - and I could not have foreseen where it would go. I really thought I could 'deal' with most things that are thrown at me - but this one was so 'different' (not really sure how to explain it)'

@Faith-and-Hope the posts in question didn't offend or make me angry - quite the opposite - I felt complete and heartfelt sadness and despair for this person.

Re: Am Not Coping

Funny you should say that @Former-Member because I have been avoiding posts from new or relatively new contributors - or new threads that have been started (unless I know the member really well) - since this occurred. I have tried to just stick to a few threads and have 'jumped' off if the discussion has gotten too 'intense' for me - and that really is not an easy thing for me to do if the other person is struggling or needs support - that is just not a natural thing for me to do.

@Mazarita @Former-Member I know this member involved was not receiving any support and was having 'trouble' joining in any conversations that were already established - and was certainly struggling at the time themselves - that is why I say I put myself in that situation by responding and encouraging them be open and honest with how they were feeling.

Re: Am Not Coping

@Zoe7, it is okay to take care of your own needs as well as help others. In fact, it's probably a necessity to being able to help. Even the Dalai Lama, who is very much about compassion for others, reminds us to be compassionate towards ourselves equally.

Re: Am Not Coping

Compassion towards myself is also something I really struggle with @Mazarita!!!

Re: Am Not Coping

which goes back to think about what you would be saying to others.. and don't treat yourself any differently @Zoe7

( I can talk... I always expect more from myself than I do others but hey.. what's a bit of hypocrisy when I'm trying to make a valid point 😛 )

Re: Am Not Coping

I am way too hard on myself in some ways too, @Zoe7, and I know some of these habits can be hard to shift. Knowing these vulnerabilities in ourselves can help towards changing them though (I hope so).

Re: Am Not Coping

@Zoe7, I agree with what @Former-Member has said above. I have far fewer triggers than you do owing to very different reasons for being here, so I am one of the forum team better situated to meet and greet new people and help them to settle in.

Work from your strengths @Zoe7 ..... amongat those you are more familiar with here, as they are with you, because even long-term people need support at times. Becoming familiar with each other means that we come to understand each other's stories, strengths, and vulnerabilities .... and that is safer ground for you, and others who are recovering from trauma of a ptsd nature.

Anyone turning up with an e.d. story is not going to trigger me ..... in fact they might find me glued to them like a Siamese twin ....

@Former-Member @Mazarita This is one of my major issues - not feeling worth anything - it is deep seated and long running. It doesn't matter what I have 'achieved' or what I know my 'strengths' are - I still don't feel I really matter in the scheme of things!
