How do you find a psychiatrist to get referred to that can admit

How do you find a psychiatrist to get referred to that can admit

Hi,

I am a male in mid 40s with diagnosis of ADHD, Anxiety and Depression.

Lately my symptoms have become much worse and need an urgent review and intensive therapy.

The symptoms are so bad that I have been feeling left paralysed through anxiety and a lack of motivation. I have lost all joy in activities and am currently in a really dark place with no clear way forward as I just get more and more roadblocks in front of me.

Although employed I have little disposable income, so coming up with $400-$600 an appointment for psychiatrists in private practice is difficult if not possible.

However I do have very comprehensive health insurance so admission as an inpatient under private is a very viable option.

My biggest hurdle though is finding a psychiatrist that is open to patients and willing to see via an inpatient facility.

The specialist referral system is a joke, you need a referral to see a specialist and some won't even look at their availability without a referral but how are you supposed to know which one to see?

General Practitioners do not seem to have a grasp of available pyschiatrists as the contact directories are not detailed enough.

I even tried contacting the inpatient facility to see if I can get a list of psychiatrists that admit to it, but was told as the psychiatrists are independent then they cannot do that. This is really weird seeing how they also have a specialist clinic onsite.

Does anyone know and have recommendations on who and how to contact to get a name of psychiatrist that has capacity to see me as an inpatient in Adelaide

Welcome to the forums @fireminion so lovely to have you join us!! 😊

I'm so sorry to hear you're symptoms have recently worsened, I can see how overwhelming it can be but I'm really glad to see you're reaching out for support.

Whilst members cannot share the details of practitioners to ensure anonymity and safety for everyone, i encourage you check out this website to find a psychiatrist in your area

You can add 'ADHD, Anxiety and Depression' in the areas of expertise as well if you'd like a psychiatrist who specialises in those areas (Here's an example). I personally don't have much experience with the referral process to getting admitted by a psychiatrist so I'll let the other members support you with that, however, I reckon you can even call/email the psychiatrist's clinic and request information on the referral process perhaps? They can also provide you further information regarding billing too!

I really do relate to how paralysing anxiety combined with depression can be, those feelings can be really heavy but really glad you're here in this community - there are others like us who can relate and I hope you feel less alone here. We're here for you 💗
