Welcome and getting started

Carer

Carer

My son is in his 40s and through circumstances is living with me. My husband died last September. Recently we had our first Fathers Day without him, the first Anniversary of his death and one week later his birthday and Wedding Anniversary. I wondered how I would cope with such intensive days but was with family each day which helped a little. My son has had depression since he was 8 and I have been mainstay support. We were going to Emergency Dept. today but he is contacting Triage. I am becoming burnt out. He never seems to get the required help and everything is so expensive. I have major depression being on three medications mainly due to genetics and PTSD due to severe childhood trauma. I worked hard throughout my life as did my wonderful husband.

I have very low energy probably related to lung conditions and depression.I had a third of my lung removed due to cancer although I was a non smoker. I don’t blame or have no prejudice against those who do smoke. I have Oxygen at night time but can walk without problems. I am just telling my story and wonder how people in their 70s manage.

Hi @Patticake

Thankyou for writing in. I'm only 56 years old - there are people who are older here like @Oaktree and @Appleblossom

I am very aware of the um...uselessness of hospital as my ex-husband has schizophrenia and today - sounds weird - my partner and I are his main support people.

We needed to get him into hospital a month ago and it was terrible. I had a lovely marriage for 10 years with him but he became dangerous 5 years ago and I had to go.

Re: Carer

Hello @Patticake I hope the day worked out OK and your son is getting the help he needs.

It sounds exhausting for you. Do you have your own supports?

I wonder if you and your son have discussed your futures, in terms of living and care - if you plan to continue living together and how to achieve that in terms of mutual support and outside assistance.

I'm a couple of years off 70 and have some health issues. Two decades ago while I myself was ill with medical and MH difficulties I stepped in to care for my late parents. After my mother passed my father wanted to continue living at home but needed my help. It wasn't easy and after a couple of years he chose to move to residential aged care.

I wonder if you know of Carer Gateway https://www.carergateway.gov.au

They may be able to suggest ways to help you in caring for your son, including respite care.

Best wishes

Re: Carer

Thank you @Dimity for your response. No I haven’t heard of Carer Gateway and I will look in to it. It seems difficult for me to look after myself but I really need to as I could become unwell and worse not enjoy life. Best wishes to you.
