How do you move on from trauma involving god

How do you move on from trauma involving god

Hi everyone

It might be an unusual forum title but it is an honest question.

How do you move on from family induced trauma involving religion and God?

All my life I have been mistreated by my family and then told, God doesn't want me to be happy, I have to prove my worth to Him by doing all these things that my family wanted me to do.

I have since the age of 12yrs old become non religious and still believe that there is something greater than us out there that may be called God, the universe or something else.

I have also chosen to try to live a happy life, and not do anything I'll regret as much as is possible. I try to help people where I can, though I often get taken advantage of.

My immediate family say I'm an atheist, which I'm not and therefore either want to convert me to a Christian based religion or disown me.

What do I do?

@Purplekat13 I totally agree with @Jynx.

I realise very early that as my children headed towards adulthood, I had to respect their privacy, their opinions, their choices. I had to differentiate between me having an issue vs them not having a problem with what they did.

It was me adjusting or I was going to be left in the dark and lied to like most other parents.

Relationships are not a One Way Street.

Both parties need to give. That includes your parents.

I know I'm late to this conversation but I'm currently dealing with spiritual/religious trauma.

In my case my parents didn't contribute to this in any way, shape or form as they aren't religious.

It was the church I have just left and cut ties with - I'm not ready to go into details yet.

Being neurodivergent with MDD and navigating faith isn't easy especially if you're around the wrong people in the wrong place.

While I have left this church, I haven't left the faith and I'm now starting to attend a church is more accepting of people who are a little "different"

What you do is up to you not your parent, and all I'll say is do whatever you feel led to do.

Take care 🌻
