My bpd journey
Hello community. I'm a 67 year old dad and I discovered that I had bpd seven years ago when I started a long distance relationship with a lovely lady who told me she was afflicted with bpd (this relationship ended recently because I realised that it was only feeding my bpd and masking hers. I had fallen into the role of favourite person. I'm still dealing with the pain and guilt of my decision to end our relationship). I had never heard the term before and she didn't elaborate on it so I googled it and to my surprise I saw myself in most of the indicators. Particularly self sabotage, dissociation (of which I was already aware but had categorised as tunnel vision triggered by emotional stress that would snap me to an irrational and fixated self destructive response) and emotion disregulation which manifests in me as empathising with another person's emotional state to the point where I am consumed by that person's emotions. It was somewhat comforting to finally have a framework that explained all of the turmoil that had plagued my whole life but has left me now realising the immense challenges in managing my condition. I had several years ago worked out the source of my dilemma (parental emotional abuse) but it wasn't till I recognised bpd in me that I could then deal with it. It's a day to day struggle to keep it under some sort of control and at the moment I am very wary of any involvement with anyone.
