Talking through trauma and PTSD

TW: Domestic Violence and breaking the cycle of generational trauma

TW: Domestic Violence and breaking the cycle of generational trauma

Domestic violence in my family has had a huge impact on my life. My father has anger issues which led to a lot of conflict with my mother. Growing up they were always fighting,

Content/trigger warning
I got belted by my dad and sometimes didn't feel safe (Which my mum admitted to not wanting to leave me alone with him)

This anger I witnessed growing up manifested in me which led to being bullied at school, violence on the streets and issues in intimate relationships.

Content/trigger warning
I almost died and nearly ended up in jail because of my anger and violence. I don't blame my parents as I know they experienced similar abuse in thier families growing up. My parents are still in a co-dependent relationship. They don't deal with thier issues, they don't seek help and my father is an alcoholic, pot smoker with a gambling addiction.

My brother, sister and I all have kids now and have had issues leading to being separated from our partners. My dad thinks we don't care about him, the opposite is true. Just wish he would acknowledge and be accountable for his actions and seek help. Is that too much to ask?

@Spirited @8ppleTree @Who-Knows @Newworld @tyme @Jynx

Sorry for your experience @Spirited

I too come from a world of childhood trauma. My Dad was alcoholic and the abuse would follow. My Mum was mentally abusive. I realise that they are the product of their own childhood’s. I know my Mum was raised by a single mother who worked whilst struggling to raise her children in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. I don’t know what my Dad experienced but I do know he was medicated for some kind of mental illness. I tried to talk to my mother about my childhood when I was 19 but she just said that me offloading had made her feel depressed and she basically denied everything. I don’t have contact with either of my parents. My Mum divorced my Dad when I was almost 9 and became a single mother on benefits.

I have had 3 children of my own and I am proud to say that I broke the cycle of abuse.

Re: TW: Domestic Violence and breaking the cycle of generational trauma

Its really hard to try and change patterns of family whilst the engine is running and the car is going off the cliff so to speak but I had a little win today. My ex husband gave temporary consent for extra time fortnightly for my son who is wanting to spend more time with me. son was was expressing suicide and told me that his dad made him feel the way he does. Today I have my son extra time onoing until the next shoe drops. But for this weekend I feel triumph on a little scale.! yay.

@Newworld

Yay for little wins. Do you need support around your son? Do you have the number for Lifeline? I think there is also a youth suicide line that he can ring for some support
