Re: starting to come to terms that i have BPD

I have mixed feelings about the label BPD.

So often it seems to come with stigma (the worst from health professionals who are meant to be helping - especially emergency departments!)

But overall I really am glad because it meant that i was directed towards treatment that actually suited me and was helpful - rather than just being overmedicated.

if you do get the diagnosis - i would encourage you to try and find someone who specialises in BPD treatment. it was hard for me to find someone. but it was the best thing that ever happened

Hi I was diagnosed about a year ago (I'm 36 so have struggled for many years) finally got a diagnosis and although it's scary the proper meds really can help. It's been really hard but you can get through it. 🙂

Re: starting to come to terms that i have BPD

Hello
I know when I was first diagnosed with BPD I fought it on a soul and social level heavily as I already have bipolar I felt very burdened and misunderstood. Looking back with the gift of hindsight I see I do have it, has it helped? In some ways because it allows me to understand myself and be kinder to myself. The kindness to myself has been the biggest help, because it enabled me to put myself in the position of "how would I treat someone I loved who had BPD "and then over time I was able to show myself that kind of consideration. I use to argue that it is a code of human to human behaviour that is being broken and why arnt you all as appalled as I am by it. Then I realised I was broken and scared and most of it is fear based making me uneasy. I know I cannot have expectations on the behaviours of others because it hurts me not them.

Hello @Wecanliveourway,

Welcome to the Forums! I am Shimmer, one of the moderators here

You raise some really interesting ideas about the impact of a diagnosis, in that it can be both a burden and useful in enriching self-understanding. In this Topic Tuesday we discussed how diagnosis can be a double-edged sword, you might be interested to have a look!

I love what you said about developing kindness towards yourself, I believe self-compassion is so important!

Feel free to share more of your story, perhaps by starting a "New Discussion" if you'd like, as well as chatting in this thread.

I hope you find the Forums to be a wonderful supportive community!

Take care,

Shimmer
