Unsure of where to go or what to do

Unsure of where to go or what to do

Hello all, I guess I am looking for advice on how to cope with my mental health whilst caring for someone. I do not know how to word this so I am just going off by what is going on in my head and hopefully, you all who read this will be able to make some sense of it. A bit of my background, About the last year ago, I recently took up the sole caring role of my father who has dialysis and is amputated foot but he is not bedridden and still able to live a full life just with limited mobility. To come to this I had a mental breakdown after the loss of my mother (who was my best friend and I was her backbone since my birth). After my breakdown, my father offered me a place to stay after I had to give up my employment and flat due to suffering with grief and health anxiety of my own. I jumped at this offer in hopes that I could live with him and that we could work on mending our lost relationship for the last 20-plus years. Now, since becoming his carer, I jumped in the deep end with no training in what a carer is supposed to do and I suppressed my grieving and own mental health and done everything for my father, I have done everything as if he was bedridden and only to realize this through a conversation with my cousin through a phone call catch up (who had experienced caring for her mother) that a carer was supposed to be there to support the person to continue to be independent and that I did not have to everything that my father was able to manage on his own around the house like get his dinner (they were pre-packed by Lite N Easy), having a bath (with the watch of me whenever he needed help to get in and out of) and every time he calls my name I would be a yes man, jump up and do whatever he asked. Just over the last two months, with the discussion with my psychologist, I was depressed and isolated myself at home. I felt like I HAD to be at home to be with my dad just in case something was to happen. I stopped going out into the community, stopped visiting my family and friends, and stopped doing the things I like to do as I would have the fear of missing out on something and focused all my time and energy on him. I guess, what I am trying to get at is I feel more like a carer than an actual son. But also, with my father not being bedridden but with limited mobility, is it harsh for me to say no from time to time when he asks me to do things when I know he is capable of doing those little chores? and what is a carer role all about? I know i could google these questions, but I would try this forum to hear from real stories and ideas.

Re: Unsure of where to go or what to do

Hello @Wednesday

Thank you for your reply to my post. Greatly appreciate your advice and time.

One of the reasons I am struggling is with communicating with him. As this is the first time in years that I have come back into his life, I never was one to express my thoughts and emotions because I have the fear of rejection - but as they say - one will never know if you keep quiet.. I was closer to my mum and other siblings and I would see Dad during family functions with his side of the family. So with me taking on this role, I automatically thought I would just be his child, I would have to do everything for him - which I found out is not healthy for both of us. This has led me to isolate myself in his place not set boundaries and think that If I go to a family's house for a visit, I would be abandoning my position as a carer for him.

So that is one part of the reason why I am currently struggling and yes I will find a counselor that I can speak to about the caring role because I think I mentioned to the other person who left a note on here - I have my time with my counselor to talk about grief and my fears of health anxiety for leaving it aside (as I too have a few medical conditions), I find the majority of the time, the conversations leads to my caring role than what I want to unpack. Also, I think what was mentioned too.

I guess what I was wanting to get at is I do not want my past with years of trauma with broken relationships to affect my present of wanting to care for my father now and hope that i have a clear mind going forward and yes I believe that if i speak to a carer counselor that would clear my mind on what my obligations are as a carer so that I can get myself better to be the child.

I have come across a website called Carer Gateway I think, I will get in contact with them soon because I do not want to dwell on the past and be in a better mind state to care for myself and care for him.

Hope this reply kind of makes sense to you and thank you for offering to share your experiences in hopes that I would be able to implement them into my current role.

Many Thanks

Hey there @beyondlost478 ,

How are you going? I was wondering how you've been since we last spoke.

Hello @tyme

Aww, bless you! It has been a while. Sorry, it has been a while for me to respond. I have been very hard on myself mentally since we last spoke. I have eased up a bit on some of the boundaries between myself and my father. I have been unable to speak to him about my feelings (I guess it is the fear of rejection) so I have been hurting and isolating myself more and more as the days go past. I know that is not healthy. But there have been little steps as of late, I have stepped back and he caught on the idea he has to shower himself lately, I have only gotten his clothing sorted from time to time, and he was able to get his breakfast some mornings. As for myself, there have been some afternoons when he has not been home and he would be out visiting his friends, so I have utilized that time to sit at the back in the afternoon sun with some Earl Grey vanilla tea and write in my journal. There is no current structure for my journal, but I have just written whatever was on my mind at that time. I admitted myself to the emergency department over a week ago because my anxiety was out of whack. During my time of being seen there, I spoke to a social worker with whom I discussed my situation and it was an encouraging conversation that gave me advice as she had some personal experience of caring for her parent. The whole reason for the discussion was basically - you cannot fill someone else's cup if your cup is running on empty if that makes sense. As for myself, I have found my health anxiety getting the best of me some days and very dark but I have since caught up with my counselor and cried during the discussion because everything was heavy. I soon have to reach out to Carer Gateway to get support with carer counseling as I have found myself discussing more of my caring role in my counseling time. I have found myself isolating myself more and more in fear that I may have some health condition when there has been confirmation that there isnt. So I will reach out to them. Thank you again for the encouraging words in the past @tyme

UPDATE ON CURRENT SITUATION:

Hello @tyme

WOW! In April 2024, I was in a space that I never knew I would get out of. Now, in November 2024, I can honestly say that I am in a much better space than that original post. I am not 100% there, but I am getting better. In August 2024, I signed up with a program created through the hospital that helps individuals who attend the Emergency Department but do not wait around to be assessed for treatment by the ED Doctors. With their support, I have found a GP with whom I felt comfortable and heard and not feeling like a number. I am currently on some medications to help with my social anxiety, addressed the downsource of my anxiety - my heart. I have done x-rays, and everything to reassure me. I have been out of the house, I surprised myself that with the meds and the sources from my counseling sessions, I am getting more comfortable in leaving the house. As for going to the shopping centres and being in outdoors alone, that is another challenge I need to overcome. Other than that, as I said, I am not 100% but I am getting there.

Anyway, I thought i would give an update for you that I am still here and again thank you for your words in the previous months.

Thanks for the update @beyondlost478 !

I'm glad you got the support you needed through the hospital. Sounds like a great program.

Mental health can be tricky. There can be some good moments and some challenging moments. It's not about not having these challenging moments, but how we work through them.

I'm so glad you have been able to connect with us again. I look forward to hearing from you again.
