What is the role of a GP with someone with a MI?

What is the role of a GP with someone with a MI?

I'm just wondering if you could please give me your thoughts of what role a GP should play in our care. My current GP won't be part of my mental health care as she said that is covered by the mental health team. She won't prescribe my medications either which I understand. However she is a great GP but today my therapist and I discussed maybe finding a GP that is more involved in my mental health and will prescribe my medications when required. All thoughts appreciated.

yes the health costs of everything is awful. my lil boy has some special needs and when he was going to child psych, having o.t. and swimming to help it was just so hard to afford anything else... bills included. he's not doing anything over the holidays so we've been out! early feb he finally has an assessment (8month waiting!) and will hopefully get ndis.

then cost of my meds/appts i feel so guilty all the time that im taking away from them what they need. i'm incredibly lucky with my psychologist though that she only charges the medicare amount after 10 sessions are up from mental health care plan. and now i've cut back on work.. not even sure i can cope with going back to work

gah...

gp's should help with all aspects of your health i think.. including mi. my last two good drs both did and last one was good at working iwth both psychologist and psychiatrist when necessary. not looking forward to trying to see/find someone new who will do the same.

Thanks @Kurra. My gut tells me that. The thing that happened today kind of messed with that though. I consulted with my mental health team. I happened to mention that it would be good to have a good relationship with a GP who will look after my mental health so that one day when I no longer need the extra assistance I currently do that it would be good to have a GP I have a good relationship with to take over. With that sentence she said well maybe we can hand care over to the new GP and you don't need the psychiatrist anymore. Wtf! I really don't get it all yet. I think the point was to develop a team until I no longer need them all not swap one for another especially with my history. No GP is going to take my MH on without a psychiatrist leading. I told her that my baggage was still too big for GPs to want to take me on and she agreed. Long story long after she talked to the new GP, the new GP agreed to change my medication and see me as a once off and only if my regular GP agreed. So me thinks I'm back to square one grrr. But this conversation is what I needed to work out what would be most helpful in the future.
@Former-Member that made me so mad you are not bulk billed. I would be stuffed without being part of the community mental health team and GPs that bulk bill. I pay my therapist weekly and that is all but I don't have any Medicare rebate to deal with. My therapist only charges me what I can afford that week but I've always stuck to a set amount and so far slightly above what we agreed on. She deserves everything she can get from me. So yes you should gripe about it. 💜🤗

Oh @Former-Member you have your hands full. I hope it all goes well with the appointment for your boy and good luck finding a new GP. 💜🤗

Thanks too @Former-Member, @utopia, letting me vent re the system & money.
Was reading, who is it that has psych consults by Skype? Don't this k I'd handle that. How do you pay for that?

@Former-Member. I used to skype with my psychiatrist. But all my psych treatments are covered by WorkCover.

So my psychiatrist bills them directly.

Although he does have some clients that he just bulk bills under medicare.

Hi @Former-Member I 'see' my pyschiatrist via telemed .. kind of like skyping but i don't like it, its really hard for me to talk anyway and being videoed is just ugh. and it feels more like a phone conversation in someways i dont know why... I've never been able to go to an appt on my own (id be too nervous to and i think its a rule that someone from the hospital mental health people have to be there) and sometimes its someone i dont know which makes it even worse, that someone is sitting in there listening to stuff that i dont really want to share with anyone... and its then just someone else who knows 'too much' if that makes sense...

Sounds awful @Former-Member, are you having to do that now? is that the best you can do? Yad be better off with a self help book. Well, maybe not quite, guess I expect too much. Hugs
