Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

an honest discussion (tw suicide)

an honest discussion (tw suicide)

sorry to make another thread but i am trying to think genuinely if i should still be alive or not. i am struggling so so much with literally everything my quality of life is terrible my physical and mental health are terrible i struggle to look after myself even with help i am hardly showering or brushing my teeth my room is a mess and i dont have the capacity to eat healthy enough meals. i havent done my washing in months i struggle to do basic things for myself. i am behind in my studies and dont think i will be able to catch up and i cant take any more time off or fail any more units or it is game over. i am trying my best but no matter how hard i try i cant keep up and i am just constantly failing at everything. i am a burden to everyone around me and a waste of everyones time. i dont know what to do anymore but it doesnt look like there is anyway to make things better and like should i just call it quits and stop pushing myself to achieve things i cannot do. practically i shouldnt be here anymore i cause more problems than i fix so maybe it is time to go. idk i am safe for tonight but i need to seriously consider if i keep going or not.

Hi @tyme

I am interested in other's experience in mental illness - to see similarities and differences and how they cope.

More specifically do you have any threads touching these topics: PTSD, MDD, EMDR, trauma based therapy, managing a career with mental illness, transitioning off the disability pension, insight into illness trajectories and longer term recovery stories/processes (particularly recovery from mental illness triggered by very intense circumstances and severe and/or complex mental illness for example, that required multiple hospitalisations etc.) and ECT experiences and healing from that.

I also need a recovery story to give me some hope that people make it back from the darkest of days.

Hi @Eden1919,

Thank you so much for sharing. It sounds like you have a lot going on at the moment and I can see that these feelings have been very intense for you.

@D1ng0 mentioned those wonderful support services which are available 24/7 to speak to someone whenever you feel you need to talk.

As @MayaBird07 mentioned, you should be proud that you reached out, because it does show a lot of courage and strength.

Know that you are not alone, just like all of these lovely people that have replied, we are all right here with you.

Be kind to yourself,

Hi @Eden1919 , I'm so sorry to hear how many things have piled up for you. I know that in my own experience that when all those things build up it becomes very difficult to do even one of the items on the to-do list. I'm going to address things that I have found helpful in my own life.

Food: It is better to eat than to not eat for me in my worst periods things like instant rice, gnocchi, noodles, instant meals and then just throwing some spinach on top for nutrients. Alternatively if you don't have an appetite figuring out some high value foods that you're likely to eat or that are easy to eat (eg. smoothies are nutrient dense but it's easier to drink than eat)

Cleaning: Do you have a friend who you could ask for help with the laundry? Could you try and break it up so it's less overwhelming? 10 loads of laundry is scary but making it smaller might be easier to do.

Uni: I'm in uni myself part-time and I know the feeling of being behind and then becoming so behind you become frozen. Have you got a learning access plan in place? The best thing you can do is pick the smallest task and start - once you get going it becomes less scary. I normally start with an online lecture to get my brain started.
