Empathy & attention
Hi All
Just wanted to get some thoughts on this, someone mentioned this to me the other night who doesnt know I'm BPD but it made me think.
We all like to think we have empathy - even thoughw e get told we dont have any, as soon as someone shows pain we try to help them etc but are we doing this for the right reasons?
A theory I heard and it wasnt about BPD but it was related, that some people when they are showing empathy they are really just trying to seek attention. No that they plan it that way but they feel it will look good if they are the first to show empathy and it becomes a habit.
One thing I have noticed and I'm trying to look at it from a non BPD point of view and being very honest with myself. The more upset I get about things the more I try to help others. I always thought because I'm in pain and I can imagine how the other person feels or that I'm distracting as we get taught in DBT and thats why I try to help people straight away. But then I know I always wait for replies and then I think when analysing myself am I just waiting for replies so I get the attention?
Would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts and please dont take this as me saying we dont have empathy, I know we have empathy but maybe some is misdirected due to our condition??
