suicide safety planning

BeyondNow – Your suicide safety planning app

What is safety planning?
If you or someone close to you is experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings, safety planning can help you get through the tough moments.

It involves creating a structured plan – ideally with support from your health professional or someone you trust – that you work through when you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, feelings, distress or crisis.

Your safety plan starts with things you can do by yourself, such as thinking about your reasons to live and distracting yourself with enjoyable activities. It then moves on to coping strategies and people you can contact for support – your friends, family and health professionals.

While everyone’s plan will be unique to them, the process and structure are the same – it prompts you to work through
the steps until you feel safe.

What is BeyondNow?
Convenient and confidential, the BeyondNow app puts your safety plan in your pocket so you can access and edit it at any time. You can also email a copy to trusted friends, family or your health professional so they can support you when you're experiencing suicidal thoughts or heading towards a suicidal crisis.

BeyondNow is free to download from the Apple Store or Google Play. If you don’t have a smartphone or would prefer to e your desktop or laptop, BeyondNow is also available to use online.
BeyondNow is designed to be used as part of your overall mental wellbeing and safety strategy. It is not intended to be your only form of support. Ideally you should work with a health professional or support person to create your plan.

Hi @Former-Member

Does the Coping Box have anything of use for you?

The feedback I get is that the distractions are helpful - even if they don't seem of interest eg: watching a box set of a TV show. Might not be something that is of interest, but it passes the time and distracts.

Do you find that?

Re: suicide safety planning

Great thread @Former-Member. We use the BeyondNow app with people who call SANE's 1800 line. Love having it on a phone which is easily accessible and more discreet if people are around. It needs to come with an automatic reminder to review it every three months so it doesn't become stale and out of date. I know that the developers are working on new dimensions to it.

We encounter 'safety planning fatigue' sometimes. Where people have frequent SI and have been through this process so many times that they're almost inoculated to it. It's lost its meaning and power to assist. Maybe @Former-Member, @Former-Member and @-Rayne- can relate to that.

Finding ways to make it vivid and useful again is such a challenge. One way we do that it by pulling apart the most recent episode of SH and starting from scratch in terms of what could have helped and when. It's not an easy thing to do but it can reveal a lot of helpful information.

This is an open invite to anyone who would like to do some safety planning in the lead up to Christmas. Give us a call on 1800 18 7263 (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm AEST) and we can work on the app with you. Sometimes Christmas preparation needs to go beyond presents and food!

Re: suicide safety planning

I forgot I posted that. My memory is crap at the moment. Thanks @Former-Member.

Right now I'm just massively anxious. I told the various work people that I needed to tell today that I'm leaving on Thursday and will be back some time in January, and that I can't be more definite than that. I think that's the hardest part - that it's indefinite because I need to stay there until my twins get a lease and daughter gets her drivers license. They're both struggling quite a lot too with all of the changes (they have aspergers) and though I know how to help them manage that, I also know that I need to be careful not to let their stress affect me and I don't think I can do that while living with my parents. Being there is just so - I have trouble breathing every time I think of it.

Sorry for the dump, which probably makes less-than-complete sense. I'm just really anxious. They're en route to Vic now to help me move house tomorrow, then we all go back to my parents' in NSW on Thursday morning.

Starting to understand in a new way why hospital wasn't such a bad option last year
