In (private) hospital for severe depression and things don't seem right. Can anyone shed some light on this?

In (private) hospital for severe depression and things don't seem right. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hi all,

A little while ago I decided to take the plunge and try to get admitted to a private mental health hospital. I was able to do this only after learning about the one-off mental health services waiver with private health insurance. As such this a once in a life time opportunity for me.

I've been here a week now and things just don't seem right. I'd like to hear about others experiences and opinions, and see if maybe my expectations were not correct.

The main thing I am concerned about is lack of any services or attention. My treatment consists of getting TMS (fine) and seeing a psychiatrist for about 15 minutes every other day where we just talk about the TMS and medications. The rest of the time I just sit around in my room or go to a few pass-the-time activities like board games or trivia.

There is no psychology or counselling. In fact there is no one to talk to at all, except the brief contact you have with the psychiatrist. The closest I get to seeing a psychologist is by doing a group day program in which one psychologist leads a group of 15 - 20 people following a worksheet. To me at least, it's all very obvious and general stuff and not at all personalised to your needs.

I have found no one to actually talk about my problems to. I kept asking the nurses who said the best thing I could do was try to arrange a telehealth appointment with an outside psychologist. I've had to call LifeLine a few times when I've been very, very down because there is just no one to talk to here at all. At one point I was in tears of depression and stress in the communal area and the only person to show me compassion was a kindly older patient.

My perception of these kinds of places and this kind of treatment was that I would have both a psychiatrist and a psychologist I would see often who would work together to put together an intensive mental health care plan for me. I would do both group psychology work, as well as regularly see both the psychologist and psychiatrist. It would be intense, but I would work hard, and if I felt overwhlemed to the point of needing to call LifeLine there would be at least someone to talk to. I thought, for the cost of $20,000 for my 3 week admission, this would be reasonable expectation.

As it stands I could have simply gotten much cheaper TMS as an outpatient.

Am I wrong in expecting more from a full-time in patient experience than just TMS and broad, impersonal group activities?

Hey @Jlol

I've been in 2 different private mental health hospitals for various lengths of time. It is hard at times to have a mental health professional available to work 1:1. However the hospitals I've been to I have had regular 1:1 with either my psychiatrist, who also did talk therapy stuff that the psychologist normally does. In another hospital they have allied health workers and assign one to work 1:1 with you for psychology. It does feel at times like there is no one to talk to and you may not see someone every day for psychology 1:1 support, but normally I spoke with someone every second or third day. Depending on the nurses and what else is happening some nurses have taken time to work with me especially if I'm highly distressed.

Hi @Jlol and thank you for sharing your experience. I have had a few hospital stays both private and public.

In the private hospital I was expected to attend groups twice a day which were usually run by psychologists and some were more skilled than others but usually I found them helpful. I also was able to use the gym and go for walks which was good.

Sometimes I spoke to the nurses and usually found them supportive and I saw a psychiatrist every day except Sunday.

The public hospital was more confining but I was only there a short time. I think hospital be it private or public is more a short term fix to restart us with appropriate supports, meds and treatments such as tms and ect. Once we’re stable then we can work better with our psychologist and or psychiatrist.

I hope this makes sense. Take care and feel free to tag me with any questions.

Thanks @Eve7

Yeah I have a group I go to for 1.5hrs once a day, but it feels very basic and very broad - like stuff anyone can just Google. You can't talk about yourself or your issues and so it feels very impersonal. There is also a gym but it is only open for very short moments and I often miss it.

Maybe my perception of what the expectations should be here are skewed, but I don't get how this is any better than being on the outside, especially given the cost.

We were encouraged to talk about ourselves @Jlol . I guess it’s different everywhere.

It’s hard to know what to do. I would think “what am I doing here”? Then I’d appreciate the isolation just to try and get my head together. Once I told my psychiatrist I’d be better off lying on the beach in Fiji for a week!

I hope your stay is worthwhile.

Yes, @Jlol you could have managed better at home but I’m unsure why you don’t have access to allied health with your admission.

I go to a private hospital which is near the beach so it’s good for walks. I can understand if you need to make your own bed but you should have room cleaning provided.

It will need to be your decision if you stay or go and I’m sorry it hasn’t helped.
