Negative self talk

Negative self talk

Hey all! I was wondering what kinds of strategies you all have for negative self talk? Affirmations aren't really doing it for me right now and I can't afford to see my psychologist at the moment, which is a real shame because they really help me to hold things together with my combination of ASD, ADHD and bipolar. Oh and PTSD!

I think that what's hard is that we have recently realised that I don't have 2-3 labels but 4 mental health challenges/disorders which make my life really hard to deal with. That's been crushing me more than I have really realised. I am also on my own too much after taking 3 months off work with a medical certificate after I had a big autistic meltdown which met with a psychotic episode. Thankfully I knew through a former coworker that it's possible to have 3 months off via Centrelink and my psychiatrist if I need it.

I'm nearly 40 and I'm really struggling to get past how I could ever have a partner or anything. I need to try and get in some healing while I have this time off.

Thanks in advance,

Rose.

Re: Negative self talk

Hey @RoseGeranium ,

Have you ever done any work in terms of reframing or narrative therapy? I found this helpful in terms of negative self talk. So it's not about punishing self for thinking negative thoughts, but to practice looking at it from another perspective. Takes a lot of practice though.

Do a bit of a search and I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Re: Negative self talk

Thank you, that is actually really helpful information. I've already started some reading and have started to feel better so that I can see that this is happening to me but not because I am bad or any of the other negative things I have tended to think about myself lately.

I found some free resources while I was there:

I'll keep on going with it.

Thank you!

Rose.

Re: Negative self talk

Speaking from my own personal experience, this doesn’t replace advice from a professional but what I have done for myself when I get stuck into ,my negative self talk, I try to find a quiet spot at home it’s anywhere your not distracted, at work I usually sneak to the restroom. I do a quick meditation and focus on my breathing to calm my mind. Just doing this exercise often can go far for anxiety and self doubt I know you stated you don’t like affirmations, but there are different ways to do that instead of just saying positive things to yourself I highly recommend you research different ways to do that. Another thing you could do is when your at home and you start to doubt yourself go out for a walk or even head to a gym exercise and fresh air does wonders for clearing your head. Hope this helps you.

Welcome to the forums @Shiki You post was very helpful. I find that really works when I'm on the verge of panic or even if I just want to calm myself down so I don't get upset with people.

@RoseGeranium , I found reframing super helpful. Come to think of it, I might do some more research and start a thread to practice reframing. I've done it in a few threads with members, but I haven't make a specific thread for it.

And yes, you are right. Your thoughts don't make you 'good' or 'bad' because thoughts are purely thoughts. It's what we do with the thoughts that matters.

@tyme @Thank you for your kind words, J think a thread of Re-framing would be a fantastic idea I would be keen to read your ideas and help contribute.

Re: Negative self talk

My pleasure!

I also was having a bad moment just now so I laid down and imagined my negative thoughts as thousands of tiny people evacuating a village from around my heart. I would breathe in positivity then breathe out so that these thousands of tiny people were like each individual negative thought about myself evacuating a village. It was better when I laid down on the ground to do it. No harm came to the tiny, imaginary people, but I felt a distinct relief when I opened my eyes. Going off into another room is a great idea and I think this will add to it.

I will add that to the narrative therapy.

Thanks!

Rose.

Re: Negative self talk

Hi @RoseGeranium - I've heard it said that your brain isn't trying to make you happy, it's trying to keep you alive. Negative self talk is like anxiety trying to protect you from the worst the world has to offer by reminding you about it at every opportunity it has - which saps joy, but keeps you alive. Just because it's a thought in your head, that doesn't make it true (!) You could imagine yourself giving this negative self talk a big hug and reassuring it that you appreciate that it's trying to keep you safe, but that you're a capable person and you've got this. :). Keep telling the negative voice 'oh hello, it's you again - I promise I've got this :)'

Re: Negative self talk

Something that helps me (if I remember it) separate myself from my thoughts is trying to watch my thoughts go by, like leaves on a stream or watching cars on the highway.
