Anxiety and holding down a job

Anxiety and holding down a job

I’m an introverted person who at 37 still lives at home with parents and is unemployed. I’m feeling incompetent at anything that I do. I had a previous job of only 2 and a half weeks before I had paranoia and left. I feel like I can’t be around people for long as I’m always overthinking people’s body language and interpreting them the wrong way. I’ve had bad thoughts about life and just not wanting to continue. I’m on low motivation and not feeling social at all. I get scared every time I job seek because of how I’ll fail at the job. I previously had a job offer which caused me a lot of anxiety as it was a job dealing with kids and adults. So I ended up declining it. I’m always wanting to sleep to past the time and can barely stay awake during the day to do anything. Looking at my past I’ve only had a job for just over a year as the longest period. The past few jobs have been only for a few short weeks. I’ve previously suffered from mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, psychosis and bipolar disorder. I just feel like I want a way out.

@NatureLover Yeah I guess there is confidentiality involved between me and the therapist. But I think if they talk to my psychiatrist and they change my medications then my parents might have something to worry about as they look after my medications. I know I should be the one looking after the mediations but I have helicopter parents who I live with.

I see, @CL88 ...it's not that simple. I wonder if your parents might view a change in medication as maybe a positive thing? Or would they assume it's negative (as in, a worsening of your condition)?

@john74 Thanks for sharing. Finding a stable job isn’t easy that’s for sure. I’m glad to hear you have DSP to help you out.

@NatureLover well if it’s a reduction in my current medications I think they’ll view it as a positive thing. If it’s adding in more medications like an antidepressant I think generally they might worry. I just don’t want to tell them my suicidal thoughts. I’ve only told one other person of my thoughts.

Hey @CL88 ,

Do you have professional supports you can speak to about your suicidal thoughts?

Are you safe for now?

You deserve to be heard and not live under the fear of others' expectations.

We are here for you if you need a chat.

@tyme I’m safe at the moment. I do have a psychologist who I can speak to. But I think if there is a real risk to myself or others they might intervene so I don’t feel like talking about it to others.

Everyday I feel a lack of motivation and feel lethargic. I lack confidence in anything I do. I just want a regular stable job which I’m good at and earn money and be independent. I’m not very hopeful but I guess I just need to be patient in the job hunting process. Just thinking about getting a new job gets me anxious and I just wish that feeling would go away.

What sort of work are you looking for? @CL88

Do you have an update CV etc?

I can see how wanting work and stability is something you are looking for. It can give a sense of accomplishment. It can also provide accountability and something to wake up for.

I'm hearing you.

Re: Anxiety and holding down a job

@tyme I have an updated CV. I’m looking around at various jobs like photographer (I’m into photography) or maybe tutoring for primary school kids (where I won’t be anxious around kids I’m hoping). I’m usually pretty quiet and anxious around people so there’s not many jobs out there for me. The only independent work I can do that I can think of is domestic cleaning jobs which I don’t really look forward to but don’t have to interact with people. A job definitely gives me something to wake up to and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I’m just so lethargic all day (and anxious around people) that I worry I don’t be able to hold a job down.

Parents are desperate for tutors @CL88 . So if you feel you can do that, go for it. An option is to go through an agency. There are tutoring agencies you sign up for and then they allocate clients to you.

Or, if you can go private, then you don't lose the agency cut.

When I was in NSW, I had so so so many students. I never went through an agency though. It was all private. I started with one student and then had a multitude. I was totally over employed. But I dropped them all when I move interstate.

@tyme I’m also in NSW. Are there any tutoring agencies you would recommend?
