Grief and Guilt - Coping with our Feelings about our Aging Parents

Grief and Guilt - Coping with our Feelings about our Aging Parents

@PurpleFlowers@Former-Member@BlueBay

I would like to tag more names here - but right now I am not at all sure who else is coping with aging parents - maybe I could extend the convo to people handling other difficult relations - but let's see what hatches

I have not had to feel this because of the way my family treated me - but my TS sure tried to lay a guilt trip on me - but regardless of how little I was required by my parents as they aged - though Dad appreciated me always - my mother did not want me around - and that made life really hard -

Still - as stuck as I feel writing about this right now - having written it everywhere else - I am opening a thread because whether it's because Christmas is coming with lots of ho ho ho - these elderly people have all sorts of issues and there is no end to what I hear about elderly parents - some of it good some of it not good - and of my friends sees her mother all day on her day off - and takes her shopping and helps with her chores - wonderful - but that doesn't always happen

So I think we are often caught between guilt and grief - these people who once were so powerful and important in our lives fail and become frail and fall away. Some become demanding and often cruel - some pathetic - others fiercely independent

We can't do much about the oldies but we can support each other - we all are somewhere along that continuim - from the first signs of getting frail to death - and mine have died

We are not supposed to speak ill of the dead - is that because they might hear us? Well it might be true - but I was told it was because they could not defend themselves. And that's true too - but parents often give their children a hard time in later years - and this is wrong - as wrong as child abuse -

So I will leave it here and see what hatches

Hi @Faith-and-Hope - I thought I would tag you to this thread too - I guess I can tag people as I think of them and if this might apply - spending time with your WH and MIL taking off on your anniversary would be one of those issues I guess

Re: Grief and Guilt - Coping with our Feelings about our Aging Parents

Thanks @Decadian for starting this thread.

As you know my MIL is in aged care with dementia. Yesterday hubby and I went to see her (i hadn't seen her for quite a while), she still recognised me. But it is so sad to see, how a strong independant women is now just sitting around in her room, staring outside talking to her 'imaginary friend'. I really feel for my hubby because she is the only family he has.

And for me, well you know my story. Christmas time really is a struggle for me, I know my parents are still alive and maybe some would say 'i should make the effort' but I can't. I can't go there again and hear what she has to say. i can't go there again and be verbally abused again and again and again.

But the sad part is - i miss and don't get to see my dad. i can only imagine the pain he is in too, in not seeing me or my children. he adored my kids and would love listening to what they were up to. i could tell he was proud of them. i hope he was and is proud of me.

Oh gosh this is hard to write - i know that my dad will turn 80 next year and he is in my thoughts every single day. But i just cant go there. I will just have to wish him a quiet lonely 'happy birthday' to him on my own and in my thoughts.

I am really scared that one day he won't be here anymore and i didn't get the chance to tell him how mjuch i loved him; or to tell him that i understood the pain and how stuck he must have been.

It's something i have to live with; if it's meant to be that we reconcile one day then we will; if not then I will have to live with that. I dont know how i will live with that, but i will have to.

Hi @BlueBay

Yes - I do know your story - but thanks for putting some of it here - other people who don't know your story will read it and be encouraged to add their story - and somehow - the sharing of our stories here makes a cohesive whole - this is life and this is how it can affect us

So - somehow knowing we are not alone we can add to the tale and continue doing our best with life with this unhappiness we have to live with

For years I did not see my family for the same reason you don't see yours - but I so sincerely hope your father will decide enough is enough and want to see you - as mine did - and he thought I was a fantastic person - he told me so - a lot more - but here's the thing

My Dad and your Dad chose the path of least resistance they took and so as sorry as both of us are about them - they have decided to have peace at any price which is no peace at all

And I know how horrible it is to not even get a Christmas card - but you already know the torture you will be dealt if you try and see them -

I know - I just know and I am sorry for the waste of years - is everyone? The last time I saw my mother before her stroke - she couldn't hear or speak - but I wiped the tears from her eyes and stroked her hand - and no words got in the way. My forgiving nature was the powerful force that had kept me going through all that crap - and she wept the whole time I was there - here regrets - not mine

We can only try for so long before we cast ourselves into a worse place - so I know you have the grief - and the guilt - but what happened was not your fault - and I think you know that at a deeper level by now

Lots of hugs Blue - I am thinking of you as you prepare for hospital - you will have the time to rest there - and to examine your life - and you are so much further along than you were last time

More hugs

Re: Grief and Guilt - Coping with our Feelings about our Aging Parents

Hi @Pepsimax

Welcome to the Forum Family - here we understand that people can't be happy all the time - even on Christmas Day

It's wonderful to be happy but wow - to have to be happy - to be given orders to be happy

I like to count my afflictions - it's more interesting and productive - I have nothing against counting blessings but I also like to be honest

I am glad you have joined us
