Re: Tabaluga's

Hey there everyone, i hope you're all having a peaceful evening 😊

Update on my bro-in-law; after the hospital did an MRI on the wrong foot last night my sister was told in no uncertain terms not to worry because he had the correct one done today and rahrahrah...

Strangely she was there at the time and DIDN'T see him being taken for the MRI or anything for that matter

He's going through terribly bad withdrawals (he's an alcoholic) and has been fasting since Tuesday 😢

Yee Gads! I really can't believe how they can mess up so badly!!!!

My sister is being very stoic but is struggling with the ongoing battle

Re: Tabaluga's

Good morning Tabalugans one and all

I hope everyone is travelling well today xx

My day is relatively busy

I'm seeing my mental health support nurse this morning, which is timely as I need some advice on supporting my sister while caring for myself.

I'll be visiting my bro-in-law in hospital and likely giving the staff a little talking to eg (how can you be so f***ing incompetent)

Then I'm off to her place to do a load of washing through and 2 baskets of clean laundry away 🙄

Shhhh don't tell her!

It's now been close to 3 days since he went there and he's really struggling with alcohol withdrawals

And waiting on what he was told was URGENT surgery!!

Hey when I had my BP tested yesterday it was 92 over 70 which was quite low. So I went outside for a cigarette before testing again 🙃

The nurse told me that if I didn't get it above 100 systolic pressure she'd have to send me to hospital

Luckily I got it to exactly 100 💯 😅

You guys up to anything today.?

Whatever you do I hope it goes well

Re: Tabaluga's

Hello @Taali sounds like they dont know what theyre doing at the hospital. It does not inspire much trust. I'm so sorry that happened to your brother-in-law!

I think doing small things around your sisters house like laundry would certainly lighten the load or maybe do a slow cooked meal so she can come home to a cooked dinner. Things that you are able to do. Offer to do shopping or run errands. Things she cant squeeze in whilst caring for her husband that are manageable but make her life easier. Maybe do some light cleaning around her room - whatever is manageable?

Re: Tabaluga's

Check out what AI has to say @Taali about what to do when a family member winds up in hospital

Supporting a family during a hospitalization involves practical assistance, emotional presence, and effective advocacy.

Practical Support

  • Handle Daily Chores: Offer to mow the lawn, do laundry, clean the house, or pick up mail and groceries to maintain normalcy.
  • Provide Meals: Organize a meal train, drop off home-cooked food, or provide gift cards for food delivery services like UberEats.
  • Manage Logistics: Offer transportation to the hospital, pick up forgotten items from home, or care for pets and other children.
  • Designate a Contact: Appoint a non-immediate family member to relay updates and manage the stream of messages from friends and extended family.

Emotional and Physical Presence

  • Be Present: Visit when allowed, sit quietly, hold hands, or bring comforting items like photos, soft blankets, or books.
  • Listen Actively: Allow the patient and family to express fears without judgment; patience is crucial as they navigate stress and frustration.
  • Support Caregivers: Encourage family caregivers to take breaks for showers or rest; offer to stay with the patient so they can step away.
  • Maintain Connection: Send texts, make calls, or create a shared update site (like CaringBridge) to keep the community informed without overwhelming the family.

Advocacy and Administration

  • Act as Advocate: Attend medical rounds, take notes on care plans, and ask questions to ensure the patient’s needs are met.
  • Stay Organized: Keep a notebook of medications, schedules, and test results to reduce stress and ensure continuity of care.
  • Utilize Resources: Connect with hospital social workers for help with insurance, discharge planning, and community resources.
  • Plan for Discharge: Assist with arranging aftercare, follow-up appointments, and home support before the patient leaves the hospital.
